New lighting at Starfleet Academy

frtoasterfrtoaster Member Posts: 3,352 Arc User
I was on Tribble today, and I noticed that the lighting at Starfleet Academy has changed. The lighting now has a yellowish hue. The San Francisco skyline has changed as well. I'm guessing these changes came from the tutorial map as part of a revamp.

Starfleet Academy: Exterior 2
I wonder if this new lighting would fix the problem with flickering bottles we had a while ago.

Holodeck ticket 4,431,534: Flickering bottles at Starfleet Academy

The flickering was fixed by changing the bottles at Starfleet Academy from transparent to opaque; the bottles on Risa were changed as well. Is the flickering still an issue with the new lighting? Can the bottles be changed back to transparent without triggering the flickering?

While it is a bit off-topic, those views remind me how funny it feels to go to the Academy map since it is about where Bug'n Chug was in Defiance

That spot seems to be rather popular in sci-fi Terran locations.

I played that for a while.

You can turn off shadows in the options floater without turning off lighting 2.0, some people with older machines do that to get on DS9 to get better framerates yet still be able to see.

well they closed the test server for now, so who knows.

That's 'cause people were being unreasonable and doing things like testing on it.

Slightly blue tinted fog makes more sense for distance but not close up, they did make the city in the distance look less realistic in this case.

Distance fog does make sense, but the old one seemed to have almost smog-levels of it, and without fossil fuel burning cars supplying the pollution for that it would have dropped out of the atmosphere long ago from the timeframe of Starfleet. Regular distance haze usually is not that close.

I have to wonder how much of the IRL haze is dust and other similar particles in the air and how much is simply depth of field caused by our eyes. The blue tint would come from the way air bends the light (it's the same reason the sky is bright blue and not black during the day).

Depending on where you live, you're pretty much living with a constant haze.

Most of the time that's the smog mentioned above which shouldn't be a thing in the 25th century anymore (at least in Trek, who knows if this Planet is even habitable in the IRL 25th Century)

Heat and size of the body of water effects the haze as well as I live quite close to the coast of the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland to be exact. However the haze isn't as strong here and fogs tend to be rare here.

Granted it's a lot colder here and the Baltic sea isn't anywhere near as big as the Pacific Ocean.

Looks like they want to actually make the sky above SFA blue, instead of the current overcast/grey look

Yeh there does seem to be quite an upgrade in the hues down on starfleet academy, I hope that comes through to holodeck.
Also while i was in tribble i wanted to see something at the captains table to see if anything may have changed and came across these strange looking NPC placeholders..
