Carriers will still have their function because most are designed around sci builds or in the case of the T6 Jem'Hadar Dreadnaught Carrier is tactical heavy and 7 weapon slots along with 2 hangers.
Wouldn't the carriers be tankier, have more HP and such? Not to mention, made for science build or career characters? It depends on your playstyle
I hear ya on the carrier but that doesn't change the fact that Flightdeck Cruiser is far superior now unless they are planing on changing carriers as well.

Frankly its giving KDF what they've been demanding for a long time. More Carriers. Hell... once again the KDF will have the MOST carriers because it looks like even some of the lower tier FDCs are getting the 2 hanger treatment. Something the Federation doesn't have. It may not be a T6 Vo'Quv, but for all intents and purposes KDF is getting the better end of this deal.

I still want my T6 KDF Space Whale though, along with a Kar'Fi.
Thinking this through, does this mean true carriers will be upgraded to be true carriers with 8-12 hangers and be able to launch pets at a range of 15k-20k? The new Flight Deck Enterprise has 96 pets so a true carrier would be at least double that right?
I think the Strike Wing Escorts should be able to switch between being tactical mode and carrier mode instead of the new tactical only.
Also, if we want to stay reasonably cannon shouldn't all Ships have at least one hanger?
While sci & tac carriers kinda stay in the same place engineering focused carriers (yes, they exist) are kinda shafted. Their thing was having 2 hangars but only having 6 weapons in exchange, kinda feels outgunned now that regular 8 weapon ships get 2 hangars too. And before someone tries to bring up "subsytem targeting", no that TRIBBLE is not worth 2 weapons slots on a cruiser.

The only Engie heavy full carrier I can think of off the top of my head is the Mirror Vo'Quv.

Thinking back, escorts with Commander Tacs got outperformed in damage output by Battlecruisers with Lt. Comm Tac since they had 8 weapons instead of 7, and got a Experimental Weapon slot to compensate. Now Flight-deck Cruisers with Lt. Comm. Tacs have 8 versus 7 weapons on the Commander Tac having Tactical Dreadnought Cruisers... On top of that, they can enhance their hangar pets durability either via "Shield Frequency" Cruiser Command to help their shields when in range, or "Attract Fire" to keep more damage going towards the main carrier.

Not what seriousdave is talking about, as that has a Commander Science.
Engineering Carriers (that aren't Flight-Deck) that have Commander Engineering slots are limited to the Obelisk Carrier, Hur’q Vecrid Hive Dreadnought Carrier, and Vorgon Ryn'kodan Carrier. Those three seem rather behind the curve now.
I would not call it "devalued" really, what they are doing is cleaning up the sloppiness that blurred the line between full carriers and hybrid carriers. Dedicated carriers are getting the carrier-oriented masteries like hanger haste and whatnot while the hybrids concentrate on the cruiser/battleship/destroyer style masteries instead of the current inconsistent mix.
I wish they were overhauling the Obelisk and a few others that they left out too though.

Would be nice if this was a lead up to a T6 Vo'Quv
> @azrael605 said: > Is there an announcement of some changes to carriers that I didn't see? No idea what ya'll are on about.
It's not current Carriers that will be changing, but rather Flight Deck Cruisers that will gain an extra hangar bay (for two in total) and be renamed Flight Deck Carriers (an unfortunate name as its redundant, others have suggested Ops Carrier instead on reddit).
Some people argue that they are now better carriers then the Science Carriers like the Jupiter, making it fall behind even more. I think they have an arguement that and that a slight buff is in order to Science based Carriers like the Jupiter to compensate them. Some have suggested secondary deflector dishes. I think I'd go in another direction. Maybe a feature that buffs pets.
I will say it pushes the Ghemor from being a great Flight Deck Cruisers to potentially one of the best Carriers in the game because its not just a full Intel ship, but its also a full carrier with two cruiser commands, 8 weapon slots (5 of which is foreward) and four device slots. I'd argue only the Jem'hadar Vanguard Carrier is better now, because of the Vanguard mechanic and its pet console.
I benifit greatly from this as I have every Flight Deck Cruiser in the game except for the Tellarite, Suliban, and Lockbox FDCs, which have been buffed to Flight Deck Carriers. I have the Daciot FDC, the Corsair FDC, the Retrofit Corsair FDC, the Fleet Retrofit Corsair FDC, the Marauder FDC, the Blackguard FDC, the Fleet Blackguard FDC, and the Cardassian Intel FDC the Ghemor class. This makes the Ghemor the first full specialization C-Store Carrier I believe.
To answer the original question.. yes, 'Flight Deck Carriers' are superior to 'Carriers' now. Carriers are basically obsolete now with the possible exception of Science Heavy carriers.
On the bright side, the Cardiassian Intel Flight Deck now looks even better then it already did.. I'll be making that my next ship acquisition.
My first reaction was to simply put a secondary deflector on regular carriers with six gun ports now but that would only raise the discussion if science ships are obsolete.
Since we are surfing on power creep tsunamis anyways I think the best course of action would be to give regular carriers a third (!) hanger next and call it even again.
I stick to my Recluse in any case so hardly care. Still, I'd like to express my condolences to all the brave Jupiter pilots out there.

lol..
The Jupiter was terrible before this patch, so nothing changes there.
The Vorgon Ryn'kodan on the other hand is now just a gimped out pile of space garbage.

Since I'm one of the few Pralim commanders out there I like the change somewhat. However "Flight Deck Carrier" is a weird designation. I get they probably wanted to keep the FDC acronym, but isn't this akin to "Four Wheeled Car"?

No, flight-deck cruisers won't make carriers obsolete, because they will BE carriers after the change.
Yes, they will be carriers now.
And ships that are currently 'Carriers' get dropped to the rank of 'sub par cruiser' or 'carrier wanna be.'
We have ships like the Ryn'kodan, Obelisk, Vo'quv, Jupiter, and even the T'laru that have 2 hangar bays but trade 2 weapon hardpoints for that ability.
Once this change goes live, all those ships become gimped out 'Flight Deck Carriers' that are missing 2 weapons. The T'laru can kind of get by, it remains the only ship that can launch 2 bays of Romulan Drones but the rest of them are now just space garbage.
Current 'Flight Deck Cruisers' become Carriers and current Carriers become.. junk.

Actually I havent been so excited for an update in a long time.
Well most of the rest carriers were sci-based ones - with few exceptions, but these are mainly engineering carriers - an area we lacked.
I got the Advanced Obelisk(eng carrier) which I still use a lot but yes not many around

Yeah, it's kind of like 'Underwater Submarine.'
Operations Carrier, Assault Carrier, either of those would be more fitting names IMO.
And yes, "flight-deck carrier" is a silly redundant name.

I don't fly any of em anyway.
