I just ran into another thing that's wrong with this system.

What happens if you're teamed with several players that don't speak the same language, that's going to make explaining the mission impossible.

So even if you wanted to put up your wall of text of do's and don'ts of the mission it could literally be pointless if you realize that they don't understand what you just typed out.

Can this system get any worse?
Wait, they removed the universal translator from the game? That's the only way that pugs were playable before!!!
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Are you seriously blaming language barriers in an MMO on the Random Queue system?

[Edit] Connor got in before me - Language barriers have always been a thing, welcome to online gaming.

You have to agree that the random system can put you in a space event or a ground event and if your focus is mostly space and they threw you in a ground event the one Saving Grace that some players offer is friendly instructions on what to do next but if you don't speak the same language that friendly help goes out the window and your left with the players that run around lost.

It just happened to me, I queued for a ground event and was placed with three players that were most likely German because every time they died they kept spamming "Hilfe" and the other player didn't notice that, so she tried to explain in team chat what needs to be done next and the other three players just kept running around as if they were lost, so I sent her a whisper that most likely the players don't understand English, and she said how can you tell and I told her just scroll up the team chat window and look at what they were spamming when they died.

I can only assume that she got upset when she realized she had just wasted her time typing everything out for nothing because after a few seconds her character vanished so I could only assume that she Rage Quit.

Did you ask the Germans what they were doing in game at this time of the day? They should be in school learning English or at work where they can tend to STO forums brushing up their language skills. :D

Well since German isn't my native language I couldn't ask them that.
So what you're telling me is, Germany is only open 8 hours a day and no one works or parties at night, because if nobody parties at night that means no one works at night to cater to the people that want to go out and have fun at night.

As for me I work at night I come home at 1 a.m. And I play a little STO.

So Germany doesn't have any businesses that are open past 5 p.m. Local time, because anyone that works at night obviously has the whole morning and early afternoon to do whatever they want, even play a little STO, but you seem to say otherwise, could those three have been playing hooky, shame on them.

In this case Google translate and copy/paste is your friend.
No it isn't perfect but usually the general meaning will get across well enough that it is at least functional. Google translate has helped me convey instructions in multiple mmos over the years since it became a thing, STO included. Even in languages such as Russian where I haven't the foggiest what the text says after it's run through the translator, could be insulting their parentage for all I'd know. At least with languages like German I have enough of a grasp to be certain I'm not insulting anyone.
The Universal Translator it is not, but it's workable. Usually.

@peterconnorfirst It does unfortunately not work, people just got lucky.

Decided to bite the bullet this morning and try this new wonder out. Ran a couple of normal queues and I had the regular TFOs filtered to ground but both the randoms I got put in were space. Azure Nebula Rescue and Romulan Minefield respectively.

On a tangent. Did they stealth fix ANR? Because it spawned enough ships of high enough value that both optionals got reached. I don't think that has ever happened to me before in all my oh too many years of playing this game.

I think they did.. it worked last time I ran it a few days ago. I did it for the Endeavor and was pleasantly surprised to find it in working order.

I owe you and apology. My comment was meant sarcastic as the situation you describe is more or less business as usual for most veterans. Language problems are there but have been part of the journey for years. You made a bad experience because of them; I bet good ones will follow sooner or later.

I once rocked a PvE two man with a Russian who could barely speak two words English and the rest of the team was a total fail. Out of experience he just knew what to do, so did I and it played out.

Learning the game just takes time and luckily I found that in 99% of the PvE cases in STO words are not required aside from good game in the end. :)

Presumably you mean you've never played Ground PvE? Because unless you've played literally NONE of the story/episodes, you can't have avoided Ground combat altogether.

I wouldn't break out the champagne bottles and declare it a victory, yet, OP. LOL!

    It is only day 1.

A lot of folks around...playing new missions and play testing the random system. Eventually, the shiny wears off, and that is when players will really see if this system works. Or is just a band aid.

Granted, you can't really see what the problems are until people start playing them, again. So, I give the system this: addressed one problem. LOL!

it is brand new so everybody is trying it... make this thread in 3 weeks and lets see what people say then...
the pugs/noobs are going to kill this because they are not good enough to play advanced queues and after a few failed missions people will ignore this feature as there are enough private channels to get good queue groups without this system or just join a well run fleet that has playing members.

    1) Wait times, longest wait so far has been 20 seconds. I know, the horror
Unless you play one of the none random queues in which case wait times for many of them have increased massively many which used to be playable are now unplayable. So big thumbs down from me as I can no longer play the queues I want to.

I been reading your thread, too. "I got mine" therefore "You must have what you need" Is the general attitude I am getting.

But Cryptic did NOT address all the problems...just one. Average players not playing queues.
And we still don't know if the impact of said change will last beyond next week.

The RFTO reward box is worth it for me since I can get the marks I need in a more timely manner, but wish I could choose between ground and space missons at the very least. I’ve never really cared for the ground aspect of the game. Players on ground maps have been kind in guiding me. Much thanks.

I'm doing far less work to get more marks/dil than elites, even when carrying pugs that afk/leave (which they do if its a ground/disliked space mission)

Even better, my builds can now be of 'Meh it'll do' quality and I don't need to worry about being a detriment to a pug! No more need to upgrade out the wazoo or study the powers we're given to see how to best use them - just slap together a fawship with little heart and bring in lots of dil and marks without care or attention!

    Throwing in my two cents.

I actually like the random tfo's a lot. I was pretty much selecting all and doing anything before it, so I get extra rewards for doing the same thing. The extra rewards are pretty generous too.

I don't mind getting grounds either. Doing all advanced randoms, have gotten a lot of space, but a bunch of bug hunts, and one miner too. I can pretty much carry a team through any advanced so I don't mind space or ground either way, altho, miner still seems bugged, at least some of the time. My team was getting absolutely annihilated, myself included, on the miner advanced I did yesterday, full shields and health to dead in just one or two hits, and no not because of plasma grenades, enemies just hitting for insane high dmg. Entire team finished with a crapload of injuries, but we did finish, no one gave up.

On Azure Neb, still seems pretty random, did it three times in the last 2 days. Once there were 3 5's to rescue right from the start, another spawned all smaller ones and we didn't get either optional, and another one of the points bugged and never spawned anything to recuse again. So yea, still random.

That's pretty much the impression I am getting. Just logged out the game for the 2nd time today without playing any Elite queues all due to this change :(

Still a mix for me. Never did the Breach non-event map before. Long. When trying to escape, the map actively lies to you by placing "go here" arrows into a dead end. So my normal complaint. You either know the map and contribute or you are a detriment to the team.

On the other hand, I got Starbase 1 (the new RA) and Swarm. Both were fun.

I'm probably going to drop RTFO's and stick with selected queues. I have more fun and I don't hurt the team.

Is this new system better? Sounds like it is for some folks. Not really for me.

I gave it a try after deciding not to bother. Had a couple of bad runs Hive Onslaught (Which on Advanced does really require a pre-made as its a toughie) and Procyon (which is a frustrating map) I like the multiple mark reward boxes and the fact these don't give dimishing returns if the optional fails. A good source for Lukari/Competitive and Iconian Marks which can be the hardest ones to score a lot of in a reasonable amount of time and it means not having to visit any Lukari TFO's or Iconian.

Looking at the comments, it looks more a case of people being used to premades trying out random TFO and finding out that PUGs are the real elite setting in the game.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
  • seaofsorrowsseaofsorrows Member Posts: 10,918 Arc User
Yeah, ok.. I admit it... I like it.

I still don't like removal of red alerts or the removal of the players queued from the interface.. but the RTFO's are a winner. They did a good job with the rewards too, they're worth playing but not over the top.

Pleasantly surprised, I had originally planned to avoid using this system but I gave it a chance and I like it.
