This is terrible news. Now we'll probably never get an actual Cardassian faction, which is what several people I know are waiting for to play again (myself included).
Thanks for the expansion that had "as much content as the last"
9 Episodes = 30+ episodes...?

Many people wanted to play the iconic Romulans from TNG/TOS (myself included). Sadly we got shoehorned into Fed/Klingon lackeys and made into space hippy Republic aka Rebel Alliance 2.0. Still you can pretend to play them as RSE and make your own foundry missions.

Is it the Cardassian Union?
Is it a faction with Cardassians as the main Characters???
NO?
Then why would I play a Cardi?
It's just another alien in a FED outfit... *Yawn* who cares?
Every year these guys could come out with new factions and new game threads...
Instead they want to bulk up the FED fleet...

They have said for years they will never allow players to play the 'bad guys'. Most you can hope for is to look like them and create your own missions for them.

I wish they would introduce a species respec token with Victory is Life. I would like to turn by alien Cardassian into a proper Cardassian.
^THIS PLEASE.
Nope. Its never going to happen as it isn't even remotely technically feasible
Agreed. Coding a race change would potentially have to take a change of Faction into account, and THAT would break most of the ships the specific character "owns".
I'm glad a full faction won't be wasted on the Cardashians.
Now, let's talk Borg Collective.
Won't be wasted on those drones either.

I think that cryptic/pwe should open up cardassians home planet cardassia that way the we can go down to cardassia on the planet surface with our playable cardassians I already bought the Gamma Vanguard Starter Pack early so I can be prepaired.
There might be a small chance that we can visit Cardassia Prime in a future ep. Be a miss opportunity not to with Garek around.
you mean an outdoor map? We have indoor maps of locations on Cardassia.
I'll be honest, a Dominion pseudo-faction makes no sense in regards to the dynamic of Star Trek and it's Alpha quadrant species. On the other hand, a mini Cardy faction would had made a whole lot sense. The reconstruction of Cardassia prime, it's major city as a social hub, and their compelling struggle to remain viable as a power in the Alpha quadrant - very interesting political intrigue, with the whole Alpha Jem'Hadar as a possible main threat.

Cryptic says alot of things that don't turn out to be accurate. They claim they have a policy of not creating the 'bad guy' factions......and then what do they do? create the faction of literal genetically engineered killing machines for their next expansion. Even bringing in the guy who asked 'why not?' when asked why he couldn't exterminate the population of earth
Because logic

No we don't. We don't go anywhere near cardassia in this game

Because redemption arc. We'll be a Jem'Hadar character serving under Odo, by the look of things, and the Alliance is and has been cooperating with the Alliance (see. 2800 arc, Midnight, and Scylla and Charybdis.)
The policy is "no villain that remains villainous" (ex. True Way, Tal Shiar, Borg Collective) because that fundamentally conflicts with the multi-faction structure of STO content. Everyone comes together (so Cryptic only has to effectively design one game) in spite of their histories because Star Trek. See too: Klingons and Romulans. Really, you don't have to go far at all for parallels.

Presently, no. In the past, yes. Those maps still exist too (see. Foundry. Players can set their own missions on Cardassia if they so wish.)

While its true it is one of the most requested races, but i think it was requested to have their own storyline, like the Federation and the KDF, hell even the Romulans had a story....so i hope that is the case here and not just a 'join this faction and the identity of your captain is forgotten and you are just a Federation or KDF captain.

The unique identity of your captain is washed away regardless of faction. Think of the innumerable backgrounds a captain can have in joining the Cardassians or, for that matter, the FED, KDF, or Republic. None of those are "officially" recognized.
Identity is something you have to role play, it's never completely manufactured by the devs in an MMORPG (that would be playing an established character, ie. a different genre.) Yes, I know people were hoping for a Cardassian story arc. But, that's not in the cards (the Jem'Hadar are focus here) so with the expansion here's the other mechanical elements of a faction to do with as you please. Ships, uniforms, and additional customization options have been confirmed (though the question of Boffs is still apparently outstanding...)

If we get the Borg faction it will be the Cooperative, not the Borg Collective, we will be playing the heroic transhumanist social democractic cooperative version of the Borg, not the technozombie hoard lead by Technonecromancer Queens, with the collectives extreme cross idealogical blend of a insect inspired fuedalism and communism.

I'll point out that having playable Cardassian doesn't mean we won't get a Cardassian Union faction later.
In fact this kind of gets some of the ground work for that out of the way, in the the Cardassians and at least five of their playable ships have already been created.
We will have the T5 Galor Cruiser, the T6 Keldon Cruiser, the T6 Damar Intel Science Dreadnaught, the T6 Ghemor Intel Flight Deck Cruiser, and the T6 Dapata Intel Escort in the game already that any future Cardassian Union faction will be able to access.
And we now know how the Cardassian lockbox ships will be handled if in the future a Cardassian Union faction was created, because we have seen how they handled the Jem'hadar lockbox ships.
Also we have Klingon Captains for the Federation, which didn't stop their being a Klingon faction so having playable Cardassians won't block a future Cardassian faction.
Another possiblity for a future faction that would be cool, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, it'd have a dark feel, but its not at war with the Federation or Klingon Empire and they share an enemy, the Terran Empire.
They could have also made the True Way, with the Alpha Jem'hadars and the Cardassian "terrorists", overthrow the government of Cardassia (to mimic what's going on in the real world and the Taliban or ISIS) and had the Cardassians join with the Dominion once more and thus being part of the Dominion faction.

Using Klingons as an example is not right. Game launch had Fed and KDF. Granted KDF was a PvP only originally but the model of the character creation was in the game before they added Klingon Fed captain.
Taking a few looks at the Cardassian promo page, I see a Cardassian in a Federation uniform walking on Bajor Hathon city. This indeed is upsetting as it is a great indicator that it will be a purchasable CStore species ala Caitian * Joined Trill.
I really wish they had made a playable Cardy mini-faction, there is so much you can do with them in regards to story line content, ship design etc... They could have been integrated alongside the Dominion race, as both species shared a deep history together. Heck, could even include a playable Breen as one of the selections.
I agree that it would make more sense to do a Cardassian story arc, than a Jem Haddar arc.
On the other hand, i'm very much looking forward to the expansion and hoping for a Xindi/Enterprise story of some kind
While I'd hoped for a Cardassian storyline, even if it was brief before being merged into Starfleet or KDF similar to the TOS era Captains..... this will do.
Cardassians are one of my favourite star trek species and I'm happy to be able to play as one soon. Now if we could just have a few missions that heavily feature them, we'd be good. I never really liked how the DS9 revamp took away all the Cardassian-focused missions and replaced them with Mirror Leeta shenannigans. Literally wrote the Cardassians out of their own arc. We fight True Way briefly for one mission and that's it. Even their leader is a Changeling. So disappointing.
Still, a playable Cardassian is a good thing for me so thank you Cryptic.
I hope there's some interaction between player Cardassians and Cardassian NPCs, such as in Surface Tensions and helping two Guls sort things out above Bajor, like Ferengi players had with Nog in the Iconian storyarc. It makes it more personalized/interactive.

Very true!
Alas, so many fun missions (like "The Tribble With Klingons" and "Saturday's Child") have been killed, while many new missions are basically mindless FMV excuses for voice acting. Renegade's Regret is nothing but shameless filler. You don't even play your own captain except in the wrapper! That episode was a blog post, not a mission. If it hadn't been for the Weekly Reward Box, I'd have skipped the whole thing.

I tremble in anticipation of playing "of Bajor" as a Jem'Hadar. visiting Bajor as a Vorta(aliengen) is amusing, but no matter what I dress in the locals treat me like a generic Starfleet officer.
See? Jem'hadar armor and rifle and they're not even paying attention to me!
Been ages since I last played STO, someone told me Cardassians will be added to the game, was hoping it will be full separate faction, always wanted that since I saw this trailer;
But will the Cardassians be playable in the Dominion faction? There are some Cardassians still loyal to the Dominion as evidenced by the True Way. So couldn't the Dominion find a way to accept them back into the fold?
