Just finished the first season last night. My only experience with the franchise is about 15 seconds of the original series (no joke), and the movie with Joey from Friends, LOL. I thought it was pretty good! Further thoughts:
While the Robinsons were all ultimately fine, I found that most of the adults were very unlikeable for the first chunk of the series. Mom Robinson was a stubborn, arrogant "Alpha Female." Dad Robinson was an aloof, absentee dad. Don West was a loser, and tried WAY too hard to be "roguish"... like someone was doing a bad Han Solo impression. Few, if any, of the secondary adult characters faired much better, like the colony leader.
Thankfully, the adult Robinsons developed adequately, and became more of a team towards the end of the season. Their relationship was on the rocks, and we see them begin to repair it as the season progresses. I'm fine with strong females, even though it felt like Dad Robinson was being pushed out of the central focus in favor of Mom Robinson. Initially, this didn't sit well with me, but it got better as their characters developed. I don't need an "Alpha Male" or "Alpha Female"... I like seeing the Mom and Dad work as a team. We get that by the end, so if this continues, I'm cool with it.
The Robinson kids were fine. A bit cliche in their development... Will is the wide-eyed youngster, Penny is the sarcastic middle child who ultimately cares for her family, and Judy is the mature eldest daughter that finds favor with both of her parents. Interesting, though, that they made Judy a daughter from another relationship, and Dad Robinson not being her biological father. Perhaps an unnecessary wrinkle, but interesting all the same.
Dr. Smith was... okay. Very over-the-top villain at times. I suppose they could still take the character in interesting directions, but she definitely serves the stereotypical purposes.
So, I guess by the end, we really get the "lost in space" scenario... but, I am more intrigued by the connection between the Robot, his "race," and the problems on Earth that kicked everything off. I hope they continue to unravel this mystery as the series progresses (which I assume is their plan).
All in all, an enjoyable watch. I will note, too, that it was nice to take in some sci-fi that I had almost no significant exposure to the original canon. Given the drama that tends to surround both Discovery and Star Wars, at the moment, it was nice to just sit back and take in a story. OH! And, admittedly, it was nice to take in a story that didn't TV-MA it up, even though the language at times was at least aware it wasn't on broadcast TV.
Oh, yeah. I had fun, overall. Didn't quite like the Dr. Smith plot, though despite that I kinda liked (or loved to hate?) the character. her schemes seemed just a bit too... succesful overall. But on the other hand, there was a lot going on for the rest of the characters, running from crisis to crisis basically.
I definitely preferred them dealing with all the various problems they had to face and figuring out solutions to them.

I've just finished season one, not bad. I do like Robot

I'm just waiting for season three of The Expanse to air on Netflix. I have to wait longer because it's a syfy network show. Oh well, I can rewatch seasons one and two to catch up.

Yeah, if you like the way all the magic, wonder and imagination of the original series is lost and flushed down the toilet.
I hear crash I think todays gen has lost the need for magic, imagination and wonder it all has to be explained in detail, these are sad times we live in.

Could not agree more. I really cannot stand the whole "must be a dysfunctional family" to be "modern/hip" thinking here.
It was good that they had to work as a team

Dysfunction makes characters relatable, and introduces conflict which generally leads to more interesting stories. I've watched two episodes so far, in general I like it but I still can't stand the design of Robot.
Perhaps to some people. Conflict can be brought in any number of different ways. No need for a dysfunctional family needing to "learn to work as a team". Not saying we need the Brady Bunch, but dysfunctional isn't great either IMO. Something in the middle would be preferable.
And I'm sorry, but for a group of people who are supposedly super smart / Navy SEAL types - going from one stupid mistake to the next doesn't fly with me.
I think it got better at the very end of the season, but like I shared in my thoughts... I found the adult characters EXTREMELY unlikeable at first. Mom Robinson was arrogant and overtly stubborn. Dad Robinson was aloof and not very intelligent. Don West was... trying too hard to be Han Solo, if Han Solo was cast from the people at a Yankees/Red Sox game. And everyone was a little too naive, like Trek does when crews travel back in time.
My bar was low for this show, though. Still enjoyed it, for what it was.
Just started episode 4, am I the only one that instantly recognized the guy from the other Jupiter ship as Shang Tsung? Lol, guess I watched that movie a few too many times as a kid, recognized him in the very first shot he was in.

I recognized him as well, but Shang Tsung was not the first thought, it was The Great Kabai Sengh.
Mortal Kombat is the only thing I can think of that I've seen him in before, but that could just be because I watched it a LOT as a kid.

Kabai Sengh was a villain in The Phantom with Billy Zane.
Ah ok, I only watched that movie once or twice when it came out, that's it.
