I really don't see how this will address the inherent issue with PvP in general, where vape builds rule all except Zombie Cruisers.
Another problem I potentially see is the faster cloakers might just set up an ambush by the opposing team's entrance to the core chamber, and vape flank the whole opposing team before they can even react, thus giving the cloaker team the spawn time of the Opposing team to hammer the core unmolested.
In theory it sounds interesting, as it is more team oriented. But in practice... honestly I foresee more of the same PvP Ganking. Casuals like myself won't stand a chance as usual. This one's probably gonna be private queued by fleets for events. PUGs are going to be an issue.
All cloaking devices, including the Rep trait one, and mask energy signatures abilities should be disabled for this queue as to avoid vaping issues. Granted, that won't stop a high DPS build from vaping other players who do not have enough resistance to absorb the high DPS spikes.
Unless the rewards are absolutely stellar i will most likely never play this.
No, that's too absolute. I will probably play it once to try it, will probably hate it and will probably never ever play it again.
Yeah, after thinking it over for a bit, I suppose I will have to at least give this a chance. I can't see myself enjoying it, but you never know until you try. Chances are though it'll be a 'one and done' type scenario for me. Unless...
disinterested. but will play it if required for rep.
I would hope they have more sense than making this type of mission be the only way to get marks for the new rep, but it also wouldn't surprise me if they do.
If that happens to be the case, I'll just get the marks through events. Unless they decide to make these types of missions literally the only way to get them. If they do that, well, I guess if I don't end up liking the content, I'll never get the rep finished.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
I must not PVP. PVP is the mind-killer. PVP is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my PVP urge. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the PVP has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Looks like you have a PVP malware invasive dev on board Cryptic.
Better run a virus scan on your stable before it ruins the game.
It's almost like people who don't like PVP could just... not do that specific queue or something.
I know it's crazy right?
You know full well that when they realize what a colossal blunder this is they will tack on a necessary carrot to force people to deal with the unruly children if it doesn't already have one.
That said I'll give it a shot for the drama factor.
Do mines suffer from the torpedo slow fire glitch?
Arena of Sompek ground queue event, although purely PvE, was epic fun.
I have high hopes for this space queue and look forward to it. If there's true PvP in it, fully anticipate to be vaped across all my mains, although the trials might demand a more rounded out build which could prove interesting.
Just disappointed that there won't be a Risa to retreat to after all the battles to R&R or tell tales of glory (more likely dishonor) at the campfires at night.
First of all, any content that is made needs to generate revenue, so premade ship builds that are neutered won't sell lockboxes or real money gear. The whole point of PvP is to challenge your build against other players in both skill and equipment. I have been in maintenance mode on this game for a long time because there hasn't been any competitive content and so therefore no reason to buy ANYTHING or upgrade it for that matter. I have way more ships than I can fly and enough reputations and spec points that just grinding the same old content over and over with a new skin has become quite stale.
So they want to finally show some love to competitive content which is long overdue. Clearly they realize that people will spend money on the latest shiny which in turn pays the bills when there is an actual need to have it or they are going to see if it improves results at least. Is it too late? Maybe, but their maybe others like myself who check back periodically. We have had years of PvE content and it's time to show PvP some love and see what happens. I just don't care to parrallel race a clock or DPS which is something the community has done on their own anyways without the devs needing to do anything. Those things mean nothing if you can't produce it against an enemy that can think for itself. I am quite happy to see this coming and its long overdue. If you don't like it then sit on the sidelines like other players like myself have done with your favorite content over the years.

Discounting the fact that PVP doesn't require a programed AI, so Cryptic can just sit back and sell bigger and bigger sticks for the players to hit each other with.
They could work it into the mission too, you get told to get into a waiting starship and race off to the objective, sort of a "grab what we have and go" type of thing.
And, as noted, they do have missions like this, so such a thing is certainly within the realm of possibility here.
In theory it sounds interesting, as it is more team oriented. But in practice... honestly I foresee more of the same PvP Ganking. Casuals like myself won't stand a chance as usual. This one's probably gonna be private queued by fleets for events. PUGs are going to be an issue.
I imagine this sort of thing would be addressed by forcing players to use preset ships/loadouts for the duration - that'd be far easier for the devs to balance out, and have the significant effect of making resources immaterial (there's a reason 'wallet warrior' is not a complimentary term).
Things like the 'time trial' variant should still be considered, though. After all, where is it written the PvP has to be direct?
This is incompatible with an MMO, since the point of an MMO is to get/use the best stuff.
What is the point of getting good stuff if you can't use it?
What is the point of doing something if you can't use your stuff?
It doesn't add up.
Clearly then League of Legends is doing it wrong, since you don't get/use the best stuff you start with nothing every round. They must be a dead game if their whole design is incompatible with being a MMO. /sarcasm.
In all seriousness, MMORPGs do focus on collecting stuff, and I do get what you are saying in how MMORPGs function. There is a factor that changes things in this specific context: MMORPGs also have junk PvP in general with a few outliers.
I'd much rather the model of "everyone starts off even" of pvp in MMOs as varied as the FPSs, RTSs, and MOBAs over the imbalanced situation we have in STO today. Those other sorts of MMO have been doing pvp in a form I find much more enjoyable than STO has for decades. Following their lead could even be called "adopting best of breed methodologies" in BS business jargon. Taking the strengths of other MMO systems and using it to shore up a weakness of the RPG side of the MMO genre.
There's plenty of RPG parts of STO already where people can enjoy their custom builds and accumulated stuff. Making one place where the in-game stats are set to an equal footing is not unreasonable, nor taking anything away from the space-rich as this will be new content so their uber-ships can still do the exact same thing in all the content they could before.
With that said, I strongly suspect the Devs will not use premade evenly balanced builds and just let people bring their own teams and ships. I suspect that the remaining die-hard PvP people will be excited at first then disappointed with poor balance and an easily exploited matchmaking system that ends up having a very small group dominate. I suspect we will see a noticeable increase in elitist players spamming variations of "git gud" to anyone who says they don't like the system and calling any criticism regardless of how valid "carebear whining". But if we're lucky, it will be a temporary event like Sompek and give the Devs lots of useful information that leads to something more effective and fun down the road.
I truly hope I'm wrong about everything but the last sentence. And I do sincerely hope that not only the pvp community has fun with this, but enough people take the time to try it and have fun that the pvp community grows.

There is a huge difference in pvp we're the equipment level difference is +/- 20% and sto pvp were the diff is apotential of 100s. Don't get me wrong ill' try this pvp, i'll enjoy this , but I will never pug this pvp.
I've been keeping an eye on this thread and it's been just fine so far, but I'm juuuust starting to see the beginnings of the sort of name calling that will cause me to have to close it. Keep the discussion civil, please, so it can keep going.

Losing faith in humanity, one person at a time.
Doubt it, though that'll depend on how good their new matchmaking system is.

Hopefully the game won't devolve to that point.
