Why doesn't STO celebrate Christmas?

You know, the wonderful time of the year? There is some kind of substitute called "Q's Winter Wonderland" but no actual event that has the word "Christmas" in it, and no accompanying Christmas greeting from Cryptic and PWE with the words "Merry Christmas!". You can see it for yourself by querying their news search.

News Query: Christmas

Only three results and only one of them sounds like a semi-official holiday announcement, with the creepy "Annual Shutup Wesley Event" that I've posted about before (see: "Heinous images in STO event promotions").

By comparison, News Query: Halloween, shows the following results:

Strange, isn't it?

Aren't there Christmas celebrations still held in the "future" of the Star Trek universe? There are canonical franchise references like these, for example:

Star Trek Generations (transcript)

[Nexus French living room]

(Picard is blindfolded)
PICARD: What... What is this? Where am I?
(the blindfold is removed to reveal a Christmas scene)

[. . .]

THOMAS PICARD: Say Merry Christmas, Papa.

[. . .]

RENÉ PICARD: Merry Christmas, uncle.
PICARD: And Merry Christmas to you too.

TOS: "Dagger of the Mind" (transcript)

NOEL: Doctor Helen Noel, Captain. We've met. Don't you remember the science lab Christmas party?
KIRK: Yes, I remember.

It's canon! :)

Because the Federation is not a Human dictatorship, and Q is not human at all.

Or it's another conspiracy I guess.  :sigh:

STO does celebrate Christmas, it just doesn't only celebrate it because other cultures and species have different holidays during their version of winter. This way, all the holidays are united so everyone can celebrate it in their own ways and...

Oh, why do I even bother with that? Olivia won't even read since she just likes reading her own conspiracy theories and watching people give attention to them whether it's positive or negative.

Has Olivia ever actually discussed a topic? The only follow-up post I recall in these conspiracy threads was not to reply to anyone but just to append some more "information."

Since we are on the religious site: Why don't they celebrate for instance Ganesha Chaturthi, or Heritage Day, Rosh Hashanah, Ramadan or the "satanic celebration of Jesus' Death"?
If you allow one, you have to include the others as well.

And don't get me started on the Alien ones...

There is only so much time one can dedicate to doing the Events - so it only makes sense that a time when multiple Holidays occur there is one "major" Event. In this case it happens to be the Winter Event; in my mind this covers multiple Holidays from multiple cultures and spares us (Devs and Players alike) from "Event Overload".

I'm quite certain there are other Holidays ("major" and "minor") that one could query and not find in STO, or any other MMORPG as well.

*Just a thought- why not stop hashing over all the stuff they DON'T do and be grateful for what they *DO* for a change. Other than that, perhaps you should stop playing STO (if you are that disgruntled/upset/whatever with it) and find a game/game company that meets all your criteria to be "worthy" of your time and effort? I'm not trying to be mean - just wonder why I see so many posts (by the OP) that involve such negative feelings.

It would be strange of Q to call his event a "Christmas" festival. I might even call that pretty damn patronizing coming from him, but hey we've to to troll the line so let's damn well troll it because facts, context, and reason don't matter one damn bit. We can't let the internet become a place for the productive exchange of ideas, now can we?

For a start, at no point does the game use the word "Halloween" either. That doesn't matter though, because the Halloween tradition (in the U.S.) has generally become non-specific to religious denominations. For example, no where does Christianity advocate that its followers give candy to children dressed in branded intellectual property. Secondly, the Winter event doesn't avoid using Christmas-themed iconography (see. most things in it). The key trolling point, that there's some reluctance in Cryptic to engage with this popular holiday, isn't supportable beyond the one fact that a key-word isn't used where it doesn't make sense to use it. The argument stops there.

What there is instead of a campaign against the C-word is simply the use of popular (U.S.) culture for entertainment. If people get it, regardless of denomination, then that's good. That's the fun. That's why we bother fighting abominable yetis with gun-drop cannons and gingerbread reinforcements.

Why isn't this poster banned yet?

I agree this is not really a worthwhile thread, given that the entire concept of Star Trek is so inclusive. There are so many civilizations in Federation space alone, not considering the cultures on Earth that have a different seasonal holiday, even if at the same time of year. I wouldn't go so far as to ban the poster. I would just make this post, and leave this 'burning house' before I got singed as well. ;)

Merry Christmas! Happy (insert your favorite winter holiday here) ! Remember the I.D.I.C.

      Yeah, right - in 29 TV seasons (TOS -3, TAS - 1, TNG - 7, DS9 - 7, VOY - 7, ENT - 4 = 29) and 13 films -- how many times did ANYONE ever mention or celebrate Christmas?

Seven (7) per thios Wikia entry.

Maybe because Q is <Insert Human Deity>. Therefore, Q's Winter Wonderland is a more evolved version of Christmas. There is that one TNG episode where Kirk meets Q in the afterlife and Q seems far more interested in humans over other alien races.

At the midway to through the 21'st century, christmas had become more of a economic celebration, rather than a celebration of togetherness and Odin (Google Youl... then you will know what I mean), so when they abolished money, christmas went the same way.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Which Christmas? There are at least three held on the 25th of December (the secular one, a Christian one, and a European Pagan one) there's also other festivals with the same name later in December and into January.

Who cares? The Winter event is fun (albeit a bit busy in recent years with all the new activities), regardless of whether you put a Christmas theme on it.

Besides, one might as well wonder why we are not celebrating jewish or muslim special days. I think it's a good thing to keep it all out of the game, since you can't start celebrating all religious holidays.

In the fruitcake. With the rum. And the nuts. Which reminds me of this thread.

If *I* can understand and accept that "Q's Winter Wonderland" is meant to be a non-denominational, inclusive, seasonal celebration of Star Trek and not a deliberate conspiracy to eliminate Christmas, shouldn't it be pretty obvious? Yes, it's secular. But it doesn't have to interfere with my own celebration of Christmas.

Because only the nuts will go out of their way to document STO's non-Christmas in protest. Accept it in the spirit in which it was created... an excuse to spend days grinding for a reward in a seasonal context.

My KDF captains laugh at this so called human celebration. Away with your pathetic religious holiday.

My Romulan captains have more important concerns that requires their attention compared to celebrating a human custom.

My Alien Federation captain finds the holiday... rather alien.

My Vulcan Federation captain does not see the need to partake in this type of emotional festivities. Best to meditate in peace and focus on calculating the last digit of pi.
