Quick question. Is the unnatural fascination with old kits just nostalgia? Because lots of new modules and specialization modules have come out that wipe the floor with the old kits.
For me it is. Since there's not much to work on anymore, I've started collecting all sorts of special goodies from before revamps and such.
I know, I'm silly
I don't think it's silly; it's just a different form of the same thing that drives players to dress up in TOS/WOK uniforms and fly around in an Advanced Heavy Cruiser (T6, with Excelsior skin) or a Temporal ship; the same thing that drives some to collect non-combat pets despite only being able to use one at a time; the same reason some of us like to create in-depth backstories and personalities (sometimes including who we imagine as the voice actor) for our Captains...
Personally, with the change to permanently having five module slots and no restrictions (beyond career and universal), plus upgradable modules, I find it easier to not only recreate but surpass some of the older 'integrated' Kits' ability sets. Instead of being locked at waiting until I get to level fifty Seeker Drone Fabrication, Turret Fabrication, Mine Barrier, Mortar Fabrication and Medical Gen Fabrication Purple-X, (which is one of the old integrated kits, 'Fabrication Specialist', IIRC) I can now find and equip those modules as soon as I start playing and upgrade them as I play until they're Mk XII Gold (Unless I decide to replace them with more 'specialized' modules like Vaadwaur Anchor Drones, Fluidic Antiproton Turrets, etc.) and I can still equip the old kit to recieve any bonuses to performance, shields, or whatever...
I don't really see how I lose anything...

If kit modules are now upgradeable (I haven't tried yet) they're now completely outclassed.
Yeah, kit modules can now be upgraded and the kit frames too. I am able to drag them into the upgrade window and apply ground upgrade kits. I have not actually upgraded them yet, but others have already done so. So I take that as a confirmation.
I suppose I am a cheap b@star@d, so I will wait until Double Tech Point Upgrade Weekend rolls around before I start upgrading.

I understand that module is Universal and comes with a [GORN] modifier that allows it to pretty much one-shot any Gorn in the game in ground combat...

Well... I will say that only one character of mine got screwed over, mostly because I had been in the process of building a Medic kit, but got distracted. She had been using the old school medic kit, now... I gotta actually get her some kit modules. lol
Oh well... something to work towards. But medic modules are NOT cheap.

As for no warning, might want to take your head out your **** some time OP, we have known this was going to happen for a few weeks now, it's been discussed both here and on reddit since it appeared on Tribble.
I warned in an earlier thread that they weren't giving sufficient and specific notice to a wider audience and I am proven correct.
I foresaw the nerd rage and confusion and lo... it came to pass.

Yes, maybe if they had given us the ability to upgrade kits and modules, that would soften the blow. Instead, they gave us nothing.
They most certainly ARE upgradeable now! I should know, I've upgraded a few already!!
100% this!
To be clear, I was being sarcastic. OP saying they gave us nothing, when Cryptic gave us the ability to upgrade kits, something that's been requested ever since upgrading was a thing.

No mmo in the world puts patch notes up in game, thats just ridiculous.
Then let's just throw our hands up in apathy because some portion of the player base doesn't know how to penetrate the byzantine labyrinthe that passes info dissemination in this game.
Or maybe I'll not take advice from Gargamel's cat.
You should not have to check anywhere but IN THE FRIGGING GAME to be warned about things about to occur IN THE FRIGGING GAME.
Not this BBS. Not some cesspool like Reddit. Not twitter. IN-GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS, LOUD, PROUD AND IN YOUR FACE.
Anything short of that is a failure to make enough of an effort at it.
Why not insist that Cryptic inform every single player individually, in a handwritten letter on vellum in gold, bound in a leather envelope, delivered by a private courier who, just to make sure you REALLY understand, reads it out loud, then proceeds to explain in minute what every single sentence means.

I think you're right. Right after the update, zone chat and other chat channels in-game were filled with people wondering where their kits and modules had gone and why everything had changed in rarity, why there were weird boxes in their character overview screen and so on . So it definitely surprised a lot of people.
Whether that's the fault of those people or Cryptic's depends on who you'd ask that question of course... as can be seen by the comments just after yours but in the end it's probably not the most interesting question to ask.
The more interesting point to make indeed is, there is clearly room for improvement. I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to follow everything on Tribble (many players don't even have access to it during new expansions if they're not gold members) or external websites like Reddit. Not everyone treats this game as his or her job or the single most important thing in his or her life, that's just a handful of crazy people (including myself ) That's something to take into account and it would therefore make sense to at least add notifications for major changes or revamps somewhere in-game.
I have already made the suggestion to do so in the little info-box that opens when you press the little question mark right underneath the mini-map. That is already used after each update so it shouldn't be too demanding to change it before an update.

Oh well... something to work towards. But medic modules are NOT cheap.
I think it will all become a lot cheaper now. I had already notified all my fleet mates of this change a while back, and advised them to buy their fleet modules at the lowest possible level precisely because it is cheaper.
You only need a handful of upgrade tokens to get it to the highest level and the cost in dilithium for doing so is already mostly covered because the modules are cheaper to buy at lower levels. And that's just the difference in dilihium, they also require less credits of course. The difference is even more significant for fleet kit frames: Research lab ones can easily be over 10k credits cheaper (I think it's somewhere near 64k for a MK 13 frame and around 48k for a MK 12 off the top of my head).
Just a bit of advice though: my first dedicated ground character ever was a 'full' medic and I must say, going all-medic with a kit is much less interesting nowadays. I think that medical tricorder and nanite health monitor (which I also use far less often than possible) are usually enough, although it does depend on how offensive you are with traits and such of course as well as on play style in general.

Though the 'Help and Support' button in-game might work, I disagree with the idea that people HAVE to go to Reddit, or Twitter, or any third party source. After all, most people seem to be able to work these here forums just fine, when they want to moan, whine, complain, and generally spew hate towards Cryptic, the devs, or whatnot.
But what if we told you that this very same forum is also used to communicate changes etcetera to the players? *gasp* I know, shocking, right?
This very same problem I have seen countless times in the 10 years that I worked tech support: Users (or in this case, players) want everything spoon-fed to them, can't be arsed to put any effort what-so-ever themselves into making sure that they are in fact informed, and when something happens, then nobody informed them, and it's always, always someone elses fault.

This last paragraph exactly! The updates are always detailed in the forums, which are one of the 5 main communication channels that Cryptic communicate through. I commented on Tribble Threads that they really needed to make effort on Live to announce the removal of Modules from Frames and the disposal of Commodities for uncompleted Projects more universally.
I was under the impression that if ALL the Commodity requirements were filled then the EC would be so, that they would only delete progress on that stuff if not completely filled. Boy was I wrong.
One of my Characters on Tribble had 14 Frames and 60 some odd Modules. Each Frame was set up for something different, Intelligence, Command, Temporal, Medic, Control, Herald, etc. Needless to say the removal ended up being a mess. Lost Modules, Inventory filled, Overflow Bag loaded, some Frames invisible, etc.

A future tip for yall bashers, follow them on reddit, twitter, facebook and the forums and you will find your duly informed of changed well in advance.
FWIW, I didn't know this was coming up either. It was a tad discomfiting when my main went to run a ground mission, and suddenly realized half his abilities were missing... OTOH, my team took the first group of bad guys down, and I went in, saw what was up (because I did read the patch notes last night), set my gear back up, and proceeded to go kick Hirogen all over the place.
He's refering to the original non modular kits, they had their abilities removed and now just take up space in your inventory.

Perhaps a static anouncement that refers players to a specific post or blog on the ARC homepage would help. At present the scrolling graphics are visible but not as much as a pop-up or simple static anouncement in the centre of the screen would be. The problem is on a bad week or a slow week, we can have 2 or 3 patch notes graphics rolling around up there which doesn't really say "Important Anouncement" or the generic graphics fail to highlight the need for players to read the content.
Okay, I know not everyone uses ARC but a simple anouncement in-game stating "Please see facebook or twitter for important game changes" would also work. Fleets already have a daily message that pops up on login and periodically so the ability is there.
At least if these were in place, the only players who would have genuine cause to state they did not know or were not told would be those who have been away for a week or so and in that case the fault lies neither with the player nor Cryptic but would be an unforeseen event.
There not. Please know what you are on about before posting. And i say that with the upmost respect.
respect or not, you are still wrong though. Nothing was removed. If you have lost stuff because of the change it was a bug, and not on purpose...do you understand that?

At least if these were in place, the only players who would have genuine cause to state they did not know or were not told would be those who have been away for a week or so and in that case the fault lies neither with the player nor Cryptic but would be an unforeseen event.
respect or not, you are still wrong though. Nothing was removed. If you have lost stuff because of the change it was a bug, and not on purpose...do you understand that?
