Start the game in Safe Mode from the launcher. That will fix it, and the text will be back when you go back to Normal Mode as well.

Made a reddit account to post this since I was afraid this would happen: When I tried this update on Tribble, all my game text was invisible as well. OS and Videocard drivers were fully updated. After poking around for a bit, I fixed it by doing the following:
    0) Close STO
    1) Go to your "Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata" folder and open Gameprefs.Pref
    2) Find the line "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9"
    3) Delete Direct3D9, so the line now reads "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType"
    4) Relaunch the game, see if it fixed.
That totally fixed the issue for me on Tribble, and now again on holodeck. It may be misreading the config file for some reason vis-à-vis DirectX settings

All from Reddit - off to try them

This worked for me. Thanks for the help.

@rgmufc1 So you deleted the line "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9" or "Direct3D9"?

A variant of the suggestion by /r/DanPMK over on Reddit so I copy/pasted/edited his suggestion.
    • Go to your "Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata" folder and open Gameprefs.Pref (in Notepad, Wordpad, or other word processor.)
    • Find the line:
      PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9

    • Edit the line so it now reads:
      PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D11

    • On your launcher, go to Options and under the Command Line option, type
      -d3d9enable 1

into the box. Remember to hit the save button.

DX11 is too good for our aging duotronic GFX cards. Good luck and have fun! :)

    @freakium

    My line says"PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType"

Should I add "Direct3D9" or "Direct3D11", adding "-d3d9enable 1" to the Command Line under Options if I use "Direct3D11"?

No text and map loading error for me.
    AMD.
Safe Mode fixes the text but the map loading hangs the game @40-45%.
Also, DX11 is still default even after getting in and changing it back to DX9 then having to restart the game.
No map loading image either, if that matters.
    NO to ARC

Having the same issue only I am using an AMD RX-470 GPU.
While SafeMode worked, I could not find "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9", But did see DeviceType line in txt.

When I apply that fix, it helps for a while (I can read the text now), then a short time later (sometimes only seconds, sometimes a few minutes), the game crashes. I get a Fatal Error: Direct3D driver returned code (DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED) while presenting. Reason: 0x887a0007 (DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET)

The game is very unreliable and is not usable as is.

I should have said to find the line
    PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType

because whatever is after it isn't important. And yes, do exactly what is written. You're saying to use D3D11 in the pref file and saying you're using D3D9 in the launcher. The launcher takes precedence, supposedly.

i have no choice but to wait for Trendy and her bloody team to fix this problem because my friends tried and it failed six ways to sunday, i've invested 6 years into this game but how can myself or any of us enjoy the game now if TRIBBLE like this happens? I pray we get a fix and soon, I love this game too much to lose it now.

    patch incomming to fix,

    General:

Resolved an issue where players with certain Intel and AMD cards were not seeing most in-game text.
Resolved an issue where control options would reset upon closing the options menu.
Resolved an issue where 23rd Century Captains could not obtain or skip “Stranded in Space”.
Resolved an issue that was causing certain fleet queues to not appear.
Improved the Transwarp location for “Echoes of Light”.

    Known Issues:

Foundry functions will not be available for an extended period of time due to updates needed from the lighting update made in this release.
The lighting may be too bright or dark on some maps.
The Resolution setting is defaulting at too low a number on some graphics cards.
Temporal Agents rewards cannot be claimed on characters which are not Temporal Agents on the same account.
Some Kit Modules and Kits not displaying for Captains

I tried this yesterday. It didn't work, but it brought back an old and very annoying bug. My game now crashes in random loading screens at about 40%ish load. Fixed it by inputting a suggested text into the command line, but I don't know what I put into it, and it got replaced with this new, ineffective code.
