I think its clear though that the movie isn't directed at kids. Especially if the villian said something about killing Rangers before in this trailer. Maybe directed at people who WERE kids back then, and maybe setting it up in a way that you don't have to know anything to be able to get into it. Kinda like WarCraft was set up for everyone and not just WarCraft fans.
the red, yellow and pink ones look fine to me; they've got elements of the 1993 spandex costumes...it's the black and blue ones that look off, though that might just be bad picture angle
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"

Even in the ones you listed I'm bothered, mostly by all the extra, and unnecessary, glowy TRIBBLE added all over the costume. They're just too ... busy I guess. The movie that came out in the 90's did a much better job of Hollywood-izing the classic outfits IMHO.
still didn't make them look like they could take a hit from something other than a squeaky sword...these at least look like they can absorb repeated laser blasts and blade strikes

The 90's movie did add a fair amount of armor detailing to the costumes, without really changing them much

If this movie makes the same mistakes as every 80s/90s "remake" before, namely taking itself utterly serious, it will fail. All those reimagiantions forget why the originals were so charming and entertaining - because they had irony and "self awareness" and in the case of say RoboCop, it was genuine satire. The remakes up to this point ALL failed in that regard since they tried to be all "edgy" and "dark", making them much more ridiculous than the 80s/90s goof.
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
well, judging from the trailer, that might be exactly where they're going - at least in the beginning
course, floaty women (who i hope isn't rita repulsa, because she seriously seems more like a scorpina) saying she's killed rangers before certainly doesn't help...but then again, power rangers isn't a stranger to ranger death *cough*kendrix*cough*

According to IMDB... it is. And honestly... compared to the original incarnation, this one looks like a legitimate threat. The other one just looked like a fool with the poofy costume. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0026916/?ref_=tt_cl_t6
Like I said earlier in the thread, I think they're focusing more on the fanbase who grew up with it over attracting new kids. Hence the more serious tone, as those kids who originally watched it are grown up now. But I think they're also making it like Blizzard did WarCraft. Make it so you don't need to know anything to be able to enjoy the movie. Prior knowledge may help some things to make sense, but its not necessary. Origin story.
If they went with the campy, it would only appeal to a niche market, and a relatively small one. By doing a more serious tone, they may appeal to a wider market. Lets just hope this a bit more like the marvel movies and not DC's constant fail with Grim/Dark that mired the recent Superman movies. Worked for Batman, but sure as hell not for the Man of Steel himself.
Well, Rita was not meant to ever engage in physical combat. Her Sentai counterpart was called "Witch Bandora", which explains a lot about why she uses henchmen for all her fights... also... The original actress died. The new one.... Well here's the promotion image they released:
Def feels more like Scorpina than Rita based on how she looks and acts, but we've barely even seen the character for the first time. BUT! she DOES still carry around a gnarly magic staff, so I'm gonna wait and see.
it's just not rita repulsa without the constant shrill screeching and complaints of headaches...i hope they at least keep the 'Magic wand, make my monster GROW!' part
and if this one does take off, i wonder if the sequel will introduce lord zedd...and how they'd do him, i'm not sure - the original was actually a serious badass...so much so, parents complained after his introduction to the series and saban had to tone him down significantly

I read somewhere the other day that Rita is a former Green Ranger in the new movie

Eh, that has been a fan theory floating around since the old days. The general theory was that she had been an original generation ranger and that Lord Zed corrupted her into betraying her teammates leading to the ten thousand year imprisonment of herself and Zordon. It was always just a theory to try to explain why she had the Green Ranger's power coin. The only thing that would even hint at this being a possibility is an episode where Lord Zed tried to brainwash the Pink Ranger and she faked them out by acting like Rita.
----
Personally I think the new costumes are far to busy and lack proper use of contrasting colors, but they are passable.
Goldar and the Megazord on the other hand are totally unrecognizable from the source material and that is a major sin for a reboot of any kind.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the art style in this movie at all. For the suits, I'd prefer a more metallic take on the '95 movie suits, and goldar and the zords I'd go for a simple update to the classic designs. Rita doesn't bother me as much, and I can go along with the new zordon design, but the new Alpha 5 is a complete abomination and would be much better if he was closer to the show version.
considering the fact that 2017!rita's wiki page on the PR wiki outright STATES that she was formerly the green ranger, i'd say that's more than mere fan theory
