Finally saw ST Beyond and I wanted to hate it, I mean as a purest I should but I couldn't do it. As a matter of fact I liked it so much that I decided to rethink how I feel about the first two movies. I still love the originals but the new films have their own place as well, not as remakes but as good stand alone films. If these weren't Star Trek films I would love them so why can't I love them as Star Trek films. I especially loved the way they portreyed Amb Spock's death and the scean (Spoiler) where Spock opens a box of Old Spocks things and finds a picture of the Old Crew, the new giving homage to the old.

And another reason it was better was because not only was it written by Simon Pegg, a Star Trek Fan, but Justin Lin, the director, wanted to do it justice as well since he also likes Star Trek.
Jury's still out on my end on the new Enterprise-A though. Then again it took me until the Enterprise popped out of Titan for me to like the reboot Enterprise. But if she still has the big nacelle struts like in the concept art... Gonna take a lot to get me to like the new design.
As opposed to the infinitely more complex spaceship that did the same?
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Thank you.
Bike or ship, both were Awesome, I want them both. Also, we don't know what happened btw the time Kirk said I have an idea and when he appeared on the bike, could it be that the alien girl and Scotty caused the miracle to happen?

It had a few genuinely good moments and even one that had me shed tears like a targlet, but for the most part it lacked substance. It was really aimed at being a movie like you see them in today's screenings, it never diverged from the default box office formula. Way too many, endless action scenes and way too few, dearly needed scenes of exposition and characterisation. The antagonist's motivation and his methods remained flimsy at best and completely idiotic at worse and half of the potential the movie had wasn't touched at all. Space/battle scenes were bombastic and high-gloss, yet way too dark and shaky and, again, they never, ever stopped. There was some genuinely heartwarming humour in it as well as terribly forced "laughs" for lol's sake.

How do you know that Scotty didn't tinker with it before Kirk got there?

For that matter, how do we know Kirk didn't tinker with it. Didn't he say his dad used to own one?

Well, good, sad ones. The photograph in Spock's belongings.

Soooo it was a typical trek movie
Regarding the plot and "villian" absolutely. It was literally the same setup with slightly modified scenery than every other Trek movie except for 1 and 4.

Or is it? How succesful was IV compared to the others? I found it one of the most entertaining simply because it was fun. Yes, by today's standard maybe a bit on the preachy side, but that is also part of Trek IMO.
MUST WIPE OUT THE FEDERATION!!!!!!!
Ironically, the "villian" of 4 was rather interesting. The "whale probe" was how the Borg should have been used in a movie (if they insist of using them in a movie, FC was a bad choice). A faceless, emotionless kind of threat, like a coming storm rather than a political power or raging villian. The Borg should have just sit there and causes things, but the actual plot shouldn't revolve around it, just a way to get out of the situation and save everyone.

My character Tsin'xing
If they were still alive. errm.
In my dream version of Star Trek Voyager, I'd use the Borg as a key point for a season called "Year of Hell".
Let's take the warp core theft episode and start it as the premise. There is no easy takeback, the core is gone. The VOY is stuck in ar egion of space for a while, finds help. And then they discover that the Borg are coming. And since they have made some friends, and the Borg are terror, they try to help these people to unite and build something (maybe a time ship, maybe a nova bomb) to defeat them. And have to deal with all the problems. And once the Borg come, they are not completely ineffective - the victory will cost them (even if the VOY crew is mostly safe, we can still use the season to introduce people with potential for being long-term allies.)
That is of course an idea for a season. But for a movie - I am sure they could come up with something, too. The Whale Probe needed whales, the Borg probably need something to make them blow up (or at least blow away?), but that is certainly something you could do by trying to make allies and what not.
In writing class we learned about the man vs man, man vs self, etc. conflicts, and I always thought of the Borg as the man vs nature one. They were an unconscious force everyone had to work around (at least in the first act it was like that).
That's exactly what I mean and I agree
