Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."

Actually there is a higher concentration of whiny little TRIBBLE on the forums then in game so if anything those poll numbers are skewed towards those who don't like it.
According to the last infographic they released, 51% of captains are tac, 28% are engineers, and 21% are science. I'm sure science has eclipsed engineering since then.
I love the new skill system! And it makes my shields very good, even better than before. That and I am still able to re-create my 110,000 hull build. Engineering tank for the win! It's sooo much better with the new skills system!
I'm also happy the DPS'ers got turned down a bit, no more one-shooting Borg Cube's
I'm a SCI captain in a krenim vessel yes from the event, yes it's the best thing I own. That aside, my brother in law got me into this game and before this update I had my TRIBBLE handed to me on a silver platter in about 8 seconds flat in pvp against him. He's a tactical captain super manoeuvrable and hits like a sledgehammer, with ridiculous abilities I refuse to pay for because I'm cheap...after this update it's all changed, I beat him in my opening volley and was fully charged and ready to go again before he respawned, my shields didn't even twitch. I thought oh I've just been beefed up a little lets try some pve I'm sure you still hit as hard as ever...nope...boy was I wrong, loads of previously had passive abilities seem to have disappeared and he's basically been nerfed big time, but I check forums and I haven't seen anything similar happening to anyone else.
I agree the new skill tree seems a bit...dumbed down...I know because I understood it for a change.
Are there any tactical captains out there who are sharing the same fate as my brother?
Dot get me wrong I have never been so happy to blow someone up so many times so quickly but he's in a mood and a lot bigger than me. Even then I'm struggling to understand why there is such a big power difference all of a sudden
I'm not good with technical jargon so keep it simple please ta
Well... I think my own respec (well, reset is more accurate ) was pretty hit-and-miss, especially on the first character I went through. I've definitely fallen into the trap of trying to max out certain categories (like shield capacity) at the expense of recreating my build, so my healing ability and hull capacity have probably gone down a notch.
Still, on the whole of it, I think I'm sitting pretty much where I used to be - hull and heals may have gone down, but my shields are a lot tougher and my weapons are now (relatively) effective at any range, on top of dealing a bit more damage. Could have been worse.
One thing I'm definitely happy about, though, is Threatening Stance/Posture and Threat Control. For ships like mine, the ability to either not get shot at (escorts and other fragile stuff) or get shot at a lot more (cruisers, some sci ships) is extremely useful - as for ground combat, every scientist I have is bound to use the ability with great pleasure, given their huge resilience.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
Ok, I've tried it out on my main and most difficult character - science tac hybrid. The downsides are decreased size of GW and significantly lower subsystem power in shield and engine. There is also a change to the paradox 5 mini grav well console. This may just be a change in animation. If not the size is reduced drastically. The plus side is the hull and shield pen. I'm going to call it a toss-up and say that it's fine. I haven't specced my ground specialist yet - probably tomorrow. I'm a bit more worried there but we'll see.
It's just a theory, however like much of the music vanishing from the game i think they may also be tuning graphics down or out at some stages to reduce stress on their aging arthritic engine and server.

As a tac, I'd say your brother just needs some time to flesh out the new skill system. I've had nothing but improvement across the board from DPS to sustainability.
Anyway, this is now the third skill revamp, prey they don't make another.
That, I will wholeheartedly agree with. Let this be the last time we have to relearn the skill system. They can tweak it, update it, and/or improve it, but please don't replace it again.

Full disagreement. Any system that can be improved must be replaced.

A serverside install of a game is basically a huge number crunching program, there are no graphics or sound processing on a typical server box - graphics and sound are clientside functions. A server typically doesn't have a monitor attached and any direct interaction is carried out via a remote link.
Here is what a typical server rack looks like - no room for monitors, so no need to process graphics
I am sure a lot of the people complaining about buying respect tokens have never even tried using one of the skill/talent calculators on the interwebs. Sure saved me a headache.
This thread has gorn gone really sideways annnd derailed. Ima closing it, there are several threads discussing the Skill revamp as it is.

No, this is a typical server rack.
And somewhere in there is the charred remains of the server hamster
