Thank you, that's exactly what I think, Gtvadeimos. Those two designs you mentioned are the best ones of the lot, but they were completely ignored in favor of 'traditional' hull designs.
I'd love to get a petition started to throw out all of those designs (similarly, no offense to the designers, but they all *do* feel like Escorts & Cruisers), & use one or both of those rough sketches.
Consider that petition signed, though trendy already stated in the first face off thread that there is no hope of getting other designs in the contest as this apparently took months of prep... which really just makes me wonder exactly how inefficient their process is. >>
The only rational explanation for the length of time would be if these ships have all actually been rather fleshed out already, in which case they should have shown us more detail from the get go and not "update as the candidates narrow." Nothing like making uninformed decisions... It will be pretty sad/hilarious if people find the design they voted for looks fantastic from above/the side only to find the 3/4 view, aft view, fore view, ventral view, every other view all look horrendous. At the very least the competition should have started off with a full orthographic of the concepts.
The Nebula-configured Odyssey needs to be a thing.
You all remember when Spock died? And he had the death scene with Kirk, and then there was the funeral, and Kirk's voice cracked and Scotty played the bagpipes, and we all teared up (don't even try to deny it)?
The way this vote is going is sadder than that.
Eightrichte - I agree with a lot of what you've said. Like another poster above it appears I lost the first vote with Beta although not entirely sure--facebook may have more favored it, and don't know twitter results. I also however voted for Delta here. I think I could warm up to Gamma if it took the forward 25% of Delta's top & side view and paste it over Gamma. Surprisingly I even did this in Photoshop and was shocked in that the only thing I had to do was reduce Delta's image size by 5% to make certain sauser circular lines align perfectly. It even fit the bottom profile very nicely and gave the appearance of a rounded sauser (in front) yet still gained the slightly slimer profile of Delta with nice side impulse shown on the Gamma.
I voted Delta although the exercise above was trying to find something I could be at least happy with or willing to fly. I do however like one characteristic that Gamma had, far side mounted impulse engines, on the carrier similar to Beta. The only other real compliment I can give Gamma is it appears to have the appearance of a small lower hull section.
Generally I agree though I think (may have started the star destroyer analysis) as Alpha & Omega in particular appears a lot like the Acclamator-class Star Destroyer. It's also the reason that if that's the way people only want to go with Carriers (they want them large) then give them only 3 forward & 2 rear weapons [Engineering Preference] and make them carriers with 3 hangers--but make them slower turn rates given their size. Then provide light carriers with 2 hangers for those who want more manueverable science carriers with 3 forward & 3 rear OR 4 forward & 2 rear weapons.
Our beloved beta is indeed dead. If you look on the contest page, they've grayed her out and moved alpha down the bracket. I assume that includes an accurate count of the twitter/facebook votes.

I went with Gamma. To tell the truth no federation ship screams carrier. Even though all star trek star ships are twice the size of one and have about a 1/5th of the crew of a modern carrier.
I agree. Hopefully the ship we /really/ want will be there at the last hand. We just have to keep baiting the other voters on, so that WE get what WE want.

Going to be Gamma winning this round, making Alpha V Gamma. Then Epsilon winning over Theta and Omega over Sigma. Of them, Omega will win making the final match Alpha v Omega with Omega winning in the end. Honestly, don't know why they are doing this bracket when it's obvious what the end result will be.
Still not a big fan of the "mismatched engines" thing. Makes it look like the ship is going to warp in loop-the-loops. And really, why would you complicate manufacturing by manufacturing two different mismatched sets of engines instead of interchangeable ones?
Exactly. There must be internal story-logic. TOS and TNG, for example, showed us architecture that made sense even if you knew nothing of Star Trek. Arbitrary design decisions make the user experience jarring and perpetually annoying. Form and function must be united. Starships aren't abstract sculptures in space.
But does it surprise you? From the beginning STO and it's players were very busy getting as much genericness into this game as possible. Everything which looked different or even traditional in the Star Trek sense is usually ridiculed by a good portion of the playerbase and things that look like default sci-fi stuff gets applauded for being innovative. People want the ships they know from other shows in this game, they'd even prefer present day jetfighters and battleships just floating through space.
Very true and sad. We're the last true fans, an ancient race, a vanishing people. Like a star cluster in the middle of a void, enlightened for nothing.
Not crazy about a round saucer for a carrier...prefer something a bit more elongated. I liked Delta's aft section and side profile though.

Again, I'm going with "form follows function" in this. Gamma follows my original design parameters of a heavy carrier. Multiple flight decks for ability to withstand damage, to allow for rapid launch capability of fighters and shuttles for a) tactical flexibility b) strategic flexibility c) allowance for rapid response on evacuation/rescue operations

You go with "form follows function" and vote against the only design which offers rational amount of space for a "carrier"

Yes and in that sense, function is more important than form.
There really is no need for people to be derisive towards those with different design philosophies and aesthetics. Especially in artistic matters (ultimately what it is since we aren't SpaceX and we engineering something that actually has to be spaceworthy today according to any known or proven rules of FTL that can actually be verified IRL), it is natural for opinions and personal tastes to differ.

What's bloody wrong with you voters? Democracy sucks. Qdamnit, Federation starships are NOT Star Destroyers! Damn chevrons to the lowest level of hell! The whole point of the ROUND saucer section of Federation vessels is the maximization of equal logical space for humane living and ease of use and orderliness, all opposite points being equidistant from the bridge. Half saucers and triangles express neither equality, nor efficiency of internal layout for long-term space habitation.
Round is peace, angularity is hostility. The Empire is evil! You are truly lost!
Vote ROUND saucers, save the Federation.
Peace is a lie: There are only half saucers.
Through half saucers, I gain angularity.
Through angularity, I gain chevrons.
Through chevrons, I gain triangles.
Through triangles, my orderliness is broken.
The Federation Star Destroyers shall free me.
None of these are original at all. All yawn minor alterations from a base design. Try Harder Devs, you have a made a ton of money this year with all of the promotions, draw something better.

EDIT: Also, I will be taking bribes to vote in favor of one design over another. PM me with your best bribe and I'll vote for your design.
