I'm about fed up with this game. Friend I brought to game few days ago logged on no issues. Im stuck in a lag hole.
Comcast seems to be the issue. Shes on CableOne with no issues.

Well, when I logged in this morning (0830 MST/1030 EST) everything seems to be fine now. I would like to say that Cryptic/Perfect World did a horrible job keeping the STO community informed of the problem. Having been in the IT profession for over 20 years and working in Electronics for another 10+ years, I know that it is ALWAYS best to keep your customer informed of what is going on. Keeping the CUSTOMER informed of whatever the problem is will KEEP THEM HAPPY regardless of the problem and the length it takes to correct it. So take this as future advice CRYPTIC/PERFECT WORLD - Keep you customer base informed of what is going on whenever you have a problem, else you may find that customer base shrink dramatically. Because no matter how good the game is, if the players can't play and feel like they are not important enough to get good communication to the problem then they will leave out of an utter lack of frustration. I think this thread showed the utter lack of frustration...

Are we allowed to connect through a VPN or will that get you in trouble and account banned?
If I use a VPN I can work around Comcast and actually play.

It's not a Comcast issue. I'm on them and I can ping, trace, and connect to any other major server worldwide, but if it's Cryptic's, it's an issue of lag, timeouts logging in (or back in), server not responding errors, or disconnects. That's even with all the TRIBBLE weather we've been having in SWFL.

    apparently it's a Level 3 issue http://www.neowin.net/news/level3-suffering-major-outages-effects-are-felt-worldwide
Still it would be nice for Arc or Cryptic to post or tweet or something to let us know. I even downgraded my PC off Win 10 last night thinking that was the issue (Win 10 causing me other issues as well). Absolutely seems location based -- some have had luck changing to the EU server. This site http://stostatus.com/ can tell you if the servers are reachable. Right now they are not. I guess I'll mow the lawn instead of kill Vaaduwar.

Im on Comcast too but everyone who isnt using Comcast isnt having issues it seems. Im watching a friend play through Share Screen on Skype right now and they have no issues what so ever.

And that Level3 thing was already resolved 2 days ago. A day before that guy posted that thread LOL

Well, when I logged in this morning (0830 MST/1030 EST) everything seems to be fine now.

Just be aware that happened to me yesterday morning and again in the evening. Everything seemed fine so I thought the problem was fixed.

It wasn't. Each time it only lasted a short while.

Today I can't even connect to the account server but the game might be down, I don't know yet. First thing I'm doing is trying to see if these issues are fixed.

    apparently it's a Level 3 issue

I think we can safely throw that one out at this point.

As of this moment no other service seems to be affected (for instance, Xbox live is running perfectly fine and that was directly cited as also being affected by the level 3 issues) and the current symptoms STO is expressing are very much like the previous round of cryptic-side server issues (see. the tracert timeout at the second to last hop.)

Plus, level 3 tweeted days ago that the issue was resolved (check the date on that link) and so far the severity of the connectivity issues in STO have not improved since the moment when both level 3 and STO were down (they may be getting worse, presently the launcher won't even load for me).

Suffice to say, though the net experienced problems a few days ago those almost certainly are coincidental, not causal, to STO's current problems (more likely, the 8-27 scheduled STO downtime broke something.)

So if that Level3 issue was fixed, why is there still a whole lot of people who can't login to play?If it's a new issue, then why hasn't anyone who works for STO posted an acknowledgement of this new problem?
  • noxteregnoxtereg Member Posts: 111 Arc User
Been an issue for longer that a few days for a LOT of people, just go browse the forums and view the million trace routes posted by people. Almost all of them Comcast people too.

Big technical problems without an immediate fix haven't been getting dev responses lately. Take the Risa/New Romulus massive FPS problems on certain hardware (which killed the summer event for some people). Lots of reports, similar to this issue, but no one from cryptic ever replied to the forum.

Either they have a policy of "well if we don't have a concrete update don't say anything" (perhaps born from some of the recent TRIBBLE storms whipped up in the general forum) or they just aren't bothering to check the technical forums for reports on technical issues.

Either way, its not a good approach (since whatever their intentions we can easily fill in the silence with "they just don't care.")

BTW, here's another tracert on the off chance that any attempt to inform cryptic that their game isn't working isn't just pissing in the wind. The game is STILL effectively unplayable and the problem STILL seems to be the second to last hop.

Comcast is a popular ISP choice...(key point you should consider: not every affected player use comcast. Therefore, its not a consistent pattern. Therefore, its probably not the cause [meanwhile the second to last hop timing out has been part of every tracert I've seen posted lately.])

apparently the Level3 problems have not been fixed. People have replied to Level3's tweet about the issue being resolved confirming that many areas, Including Boston (cryptic server location) are still experiencing outages and major problems.

I know it's been mentioned before, but other Cryptic titles work. I just logged into Neverwinter. Seems like it's a STO problem with log ins, not Windows 10.
  • thelin51thelin51 Member Posts: 3 Arc User
I was able to log in to STO at about 12:45 EST for about 40+ minutes before the rubber-banding and the massive server delays started. I had the exit the game and then back to the login time-outs from the night before and this morning. One would think that PWE would release some kind of statement to at least acknowledge that there is a problem. Nothing pisses off customers more than being left in the dark when a problem arises.
  • thelin51thelin51 Member Posts: 3 Arc User
Ok...did a little digging. Seems that the problem is with Level3 Communications telecom. They are having a major outage and it's affecting several areas in the US with the Mid_Atlantic and New England coast getting the brunt of the problems as well as LA, Frisco, Portland and Seattle areas as well as the Mid-West and parts of the South. More spotty affected areas in the Rocky Mountain area.

I love how the sheeple all start blaming Comcast anytime they have an issue. I have Comcast and I have a 90Mbps down and a 12 up so yeah, not a provider issue. My neighbor is on Verizon FiOS and has the same problem. If it was a Comcast issue it would affect every game I play that Arc has as well as pretty much every other game that I own yet this is the only one.

this is definitely NOT a comcast issue. i've already contacted them and was informed there is not a single problem with my internet access. I've also been playing a slew of other online games today, not one of which I've had an issue with. I can also use the internet just fine. browsing, streaming and browser games are all working normally.

either Cryptic needs to get on this, or shut their game down for good.

Try running through a VPN. I have and the issue is gone. There is a datacenter issue in the Boston-area causing problems for some providers. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with Cryptic.
  • scottbsmithscottbsmith Member Posts: 9 Arc User
I've been having similiar issues since late Friday night (Eastern Time). At times the game will sometimes run fine for a few minutes and then the lag and rubberbanding makes it unusable. At other times I can't even log in effectively. Server Not Responding messages and dropped connectinos have been nearly constant.

Here are my test results. I'm not really sure what to make of them myself, but perhaps they'll be helpful.

You see how everything drops out at hop 19, second to last one before the final server?

Yah that component is not working. Cryptic issue, hopefully they'll have it resolved soon but this latest round of severe server problems began last thursday. I suspect that have to wait until next thursday before things run more smoothly (for the bulk of those currently experiencing problems).

And as an update for the issues I'm presently seeing: the launcher is now telling me that there are technical difficulties with the website (though obviously we're all here) but normal gameplay is not affected. Only stock art assets are displayed and there are no news links. It's also getting stuck trying to connect to the game (its on the last step before the "engage" button should display.)

Totally FUBAR is the best way to describe it. I guess the only bright side to all this is that the game is now getting creative in its attempts to break itself. :P

Thanks for translating that for me. It's somewhat comforting to know it's not something I have to fix on my end. That would not go well, given that this is an area I'm not very knowledgable about.

Just think of it as "space magic." You might not understand it but you can at least point out where it isn't happening (where it should.) :)

BTW, just checked on over by the neverwinter forums where there seems to be some interaction between devs and player population. The issue has been found...and its the part of their ISP's network that connects directly to them. In other words, EXACTLY WHAT THESE DAYS OF TRACERTS HAVE BEEN SHOWING!!!

Sheesh, anyway at least the cause is known but there's no ETA on a fix because its out of Cryptic's hands. They've got to wait on their own tech support.

And for those just joining us, this DEFINITELY means that the resolved level 3 outage is not at work here.

Yep...about 30 mins ago I suddenly dropped from perfect gaming to constant SNRs through the last half of a mission (which was hell). Exited the game and now completely unable to get to the "engage" phase of the launcher. She's dead Jim.

Can we get some of those Neverwinter employees over here on STO.Over there they have been communicating with the players on the forum.Over here we only get confusion and silence. It seems that this issue isn't effecting Neverwinter that much, and they get more info.STO is a mess and we get nothing.

I couldn't do my Crystalline runs last night because the lag was so bad. Today, it's the same damned thing.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words:

Everything else on the internet runs just fine. This seems like a fail between my ISP (comcast) and cryptic's game servers.
