I've been playing on Dx9 since the game went free, and and I'm running Windows 7. I only got this problem a couple weeks ago too, but I'm starting to think the best way around this would be to get get a new graphics card.

No. The best way around this is to wait for the Dev's fix for this issue, which went live on Tribble yesterday, to go to Holodeck (hopefully by this coming Thursday). Problem seems to also affect some who have newer cards as well.

Preferably *before* this Thursday, when the FE ends. Ever since S10 launched, I've had the issue of CTDs right after the Iconian War screen - the verify after I open the launcher the second time would always fix it. But recently, the game has started to freeze after the Iconian War screen as the OP describes...
Sometimes, I really want to play this game, but PWE/Cryptic/whatever really doesn't want me to play it. GG 10/10.
Just discovered that the DX9/11 crash also disables my screensaver, now have screen burn from desktop icons. Tried STO last night it crashed again, normally I'd close the PC before going to bed this time I didn't and woke to see no screensaver active. Seems that whatever STO launcher does to DX9/11 somehow affects more than STO. Had to restart PC to get screensaver working again.

Smee, my system completely locks and freezes after the Iconian War splash crash to desktop, necessitating a forced 'End Task' of STO, which lists as 'not responding' in Task Manager. Interestingly enough that only happens upon attempting normal login in fullscreen mode. If minimized, I can just 'x' close the window after the STO window crashes.
Are ya sure you forced 'End Task' on STO before going to sleep? I can fathom your screensaver not having kicked in, if your system was frozen/locked up after the CTD.
As it's always been my habit to usually play STO for very lengthy sessions at a time, I've always habitually deactivated and reactivated my screensaver, before and after an STO session, along with any other background programs.
Sorry to hear about that screenburn man.

Yup used Taskmanager to close, checked processes it was closed. ran ccleaner before sleeping so system was running fine. C'est la vié

Ok, so I kept the screen minimized logging into Safe Mode, then re-logged into Normal mode. Once in-game the screen is maximized and ... I can play. Yay!
Still, all the work-around to play the game "Normally" (and changing graphics settings) is not Normal though. Yet, adding (or subtracting) about 5 minutes to my game time just to play is just annoying.

Indeed, hooray for small victories! I too was kinda delighted when I discovered the simple safe mode to normal relog trick. It's intriguing to me that bit seems to hinge entirely on launcher starting up in minimized mode though. Pretty sure I tried that transition with Fullscreen and it just resulted in the same old, usual CTD and freeze.
And yeah, those extra five minutes of just tweaking settings boxes annoyed me so much after about the 10th time of doing 'em, that I've simply decided to take a break from the game until this gets properly fixed.
What saddens me most though is all the other players out there who have experienced this same problem, but are the sort that never bother to check the forums for a work-around or just don't wanna bother with tweaking bajillion things to get the game going or just outright thought 'oh well, it's totally broken, guess that's it for STO!'.
Several years ago, there was some ISP problem that inadvertently blocked a ton of player's IP addresses. Myself and others spent weeks going back and forth with Cryptic/PW tech support, to no avail. Went through all the IPconfig rigmarole and gods only recall what else. I went something like three months without playing, as it simply wouldn't let me log in. If I recall correctly, the launcher itself wouldn't even pop up. Then, one day, on a hunch, I just left my modem unplugged and disconnected for over 24 hours. After reconnecting, I tried STO again and got in without a hitch. Haven't endured another major STO problem until this one we've got now.

Well, of that population, I'm sure there are a handful that check reddit instead of the official forums. There are a few threads devoted to this issue there, then keep in mind those that actually DO look around but don't post. I'd like to think only those that care enough for the IP or game would go so far to figure a way in before giving up completely.
Don't get me wrong, there was a day where I was considering other entertainment options of the interwebs. I'd really hate to move on because of a technical issue.
Okay, don't know if they addressed your issue exactly but, in the patch notes, under server issues, there is this bullet point, "Resolved an issue which was causing graphics related crashes when launching STO." I was told by the customer support person I sent the link to this thread that my ticket had been forwarded up, and I hope some folks affected by this put in support tickets about it as suggested above as I can't see any other reason PWE would know about this to fix it but that we made some noise, https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/9501383-star-trek-online:-release-notes:-august-13th,-2015.
Hope you all are back in and enjoying the game without some workaround or safe mode, and in dx11, which oddly is working fine for me in Vista 64 hahaha
Today's patch did absolutely nothing. Still enduring the same crash at the Iconian War splash screen. I even deleted my Gameprefs.prefs file on a second attempted login. Same crash but with a white screen that go. This has gotten beyond old at this point.

I don't know how helpful this info is, but I just deleted my GamePrefs file after today's patch and I am loading the game a bit faster now and have been able to Alt-Tab to and from the STO game without crashing. Don't know if it is just a fluke or not, but I'll keep playing around and see if at least some of my own issues were fixed with this update.
ATM, I have the game running in Windowed Mode with the DX selection set to Auto.

Yeah,I have to boot up in safe mode to play. This needs fixed immediately. Not very professional and doesn't seem you think too much of your paying customers.
Today's patch did a grand total of jack squat for my Win7/AMD desktop, which still has to be loaded in safe mode with the -d3d9 command line (then upped with the sliders once logged), but halle-freakin'-lujah my newly-upgraded Win10/AMD lappy can, after over a week, finally make it past the splash screen without going mental. I noticed he DX11 option is completely gone in the Display menu on my lappy, but not my desktop. Seems this could be more easily fixed by allowing players the option of choosing the driver that works for them at the launcher rather than the character select screen.
Absolutely nothing here on my now Win10 system. After all the crashes and tickets I submitted I thought there would be some progress. I'm not to worried about my fleet kicking me out (I'm friends with the Fleet Leader so I'll just explain to him), but this is crazy! I don't even know how to access the safe mode or command lines you guys can to even attempt the work around, and I'm not tech savvy enough to attempt it. Is it really too much to ask people to do their darn job?
the only way i can get normal mode to work is to minimize STO wait till the resolution kicks in wait a second or 2 then im at the Character select screen . still get 1 out of 3 launches that causes not responding . which is better than it has been .
i still get the driver recovered message , but at least i can get into the game .
Sadly, I can no longer play even in safe mode. I logged in as I last explained for the first time since the patch... Played crystaline entity, and when it got to the loading screen to leave at the end of the mission then STO stopped responding. I cancelled it with Task manager, and now nothing I do can get me back into the game.
It just stops responding before the first loading screen, and even safe mode won't work...
Had to roll the wife's laptop back to Win 8.1 and I'll give it a few more days and see my issues get resolved. If not, I'll have to roll back my PC as well just to be able to play STO. My Alt-Tabbing issue was a fluke I guess. After shutting down the PC, I started it up after work the next day and had the same issues with Alt-Tabbing that I did before. Couldn't even run a 2nd instance of the launcher so I could do my Cell Ship missions.

I created a new account and was miraculously able to log in on my laptop at least… but I have been having the same issue. It's been frustrating not being able to play for almost a month
So after my last post I decided to try again and got in and played for hours in safe mode. Tried twice just now and I can't get past the Cryptic screen. Hopefully posting here will miraculously fix it. Who knows... maybe it's just all that Chinese spyware ;D
Okay... this just keeps working so I'm going to share it even though it is beyond weird.
My gameprefs file is set as indicted earlier in the thread (I have changed it to read only after switching the toggles to '0' et cetera). I try to log in in safe mode, which worked before the last patch but now stops responding after the cryptic screen, and then cancel it with task manager. This fails and will fail if repeated.
Then I come here and post about it. I immediately try to log in using safe mode again and I get in. Go figure!
Given up, not played for while now. Seeing a lack of confirmation that anything is being done to fix this I have moved on. Missing STO but just not prepared to play any game in safe mode. I understand that @zeroniusrex and others are aware, but not seeing any progress has left me with the impression that this one is not going to get a fix. I really hope that I'm wrong, but just run out of patience...

I understand your impatience, and I have to wonder if this is some attempt to get rid of a certain demographic. I am still playing in safe mode successfully, just by coming to the forums before I play. In my case the safe mode graphics aren't much different than what I have normally, so it's no big deal for me.
I'll be REALLY ticked if I get a new machine some day and this is still happening. Oh wait... kinda ticked off already. Watching for Thursday. Can this be ARC related?
Just got a response to my ticket and basically what I was told is "our game isn't compatible with Windows 10 so if ya REALLY wanna run Windows 10, you can try to do this." WHAT! Everyone knew Windows 10 was coming and they prepared for it. Why is it that the only game or app on my pc that's "incompatible" is STO! Either PWE just doesn't care about the people who pay their salaries(of which I'm one,but that's gonna change) or the whole project team is so inept that they don't know how to make it work. If it's the first and you're just money grabbing until you get shut down then shame on you and if it's the second case, then the whole lot of you need to find different jobs or take some classes to get your skills up to par. I'm one of the few who can still play by using safe mode to log in but who knows how long that'll last(my guess is after tomorrows maintenance when more stuff gets broken or hit with the nerf hammer).
I really enjoy the game and will play till I can't play anymore but I can't justify giving more money to a game that just doesn't work half the time anymore. Better servers, better preparation and listening to the player base when they tell you something isn't right goes a long way towards fixing things before they become game ending issues. How many times were you told by Tribble testers that something was broken but you still rolled it out on us anyway. Gotta get those new money ships out,who cares if game content is completely unplayable, people are gonna give us money anyway. That's wrong thinking and a bad business model also.
I'm no big techie when it comes to code and things of that nature but if I can run tests or do something to send results back to the devs to help get the problems corrected, just explain what needs to be done and I'd be happy to oblige. The game is the best out there for space combat and I'd hate to see it go away but if no one can get into the game to play it or the content is so bugged that it is unplayable, then we all lose.
Sorry for the rant but if it gets any PWE/Cryptic employees attention maybe they'll take it to heart and give us back the game we used to enjoy so much.
I'll be REALLY ticked if I get a new machine some day and this is still happening. Oh wait... kinda ticked off already. Watching for Thursday. Can this be ARC related?
I dunno since I don't use ARC. Having said that, I'd be inclined it is not related.
Well, today's patch made absolutely no difference whatsoever! I had been cautiously optimistic that it might help too, as I perused the Neverwinter forums last night, anticipating that some NW folk have been similarly affected. And they have been. In fact, their thread on this problem has a higher page count than this STO thread. The encouraging bit was that one of their Dev's indicated that a fix for this issue was coming with today's NW patch. Haven't checked yet if the NW got lucky. Yet, having patched and attempted normal STO login, it's clear that we would-be KDF and Starfleet types have gotten no love at all today.
Oh, and, like Cmdrscarlet, I'm not an ARC person either, having steadfastly stuck to the old launcher.
Really wish we would get some Dev feedback on this issue, as it's been relentlessly ongoing for nearly a month now (all started for me with the 7/23 patch).
