There was a Stargate MMO being developed, but the company responsible for it went bankrupt I think. If I remember correctly, the first episode of SGU had footage of that game.

It did have footage from that game. I was most disappointed it was cancelled :(

I was looking forward to Stargate Worlds as well. They had all the hype... then the company died and took the game with it.

Seems like any Stargate game other than the old SNES movie game is cursed. There was going to be am SG-1 shooter with voiceovers from the cast as well, but the company making that one went under too.

I read that SG Worlds had a ton of content already made when they pulled the plug.
Inexperienced dev team went way over budget from what I hear.
Too bad, SG has all the right ingredients for a great MMO.

Yea... kinda wish it was picked up by another company. Would be awesome to go through the gate and blast some enemies with a P90 without having to resort to modding Jedi Academy or some other game.

Weren't they planning to hav ethe option to play as a minor Goa'uld lord? I like Goa'ulds. :P Except Ba'al. Ba'al got exactly what he deserved in SG: Continuum :P

Hehe... back when I used to do the AvP games I hated playing as humans. :P Yautja and Xenomorphs were just more fun. :P

I believe the playable races were going to be Tauri Human, Jaffa, and Asgard.

And the first ones I played in AvP2 and the 2010 AvP was human. Colonial Marines and Pulse Rifles. :D Xeno wall crawling was... I kinda got motion sick.

I read that SG Worlds had a ton of content already made when they pulled the plug.
Inexperienced dev team went way over budget from what I hear.

I'd been following its development and eventual discontinuation, and the reports suggested it was a lot worse than that. Supposedly, the failure was largely on one man who sounded like Harold Hill, "The Producers", and a Panzi scheme all rolled into one. Allegedly, he repeatedly oversold the game, promising things that couldn't possibly be done, like shares in the profits. Then somehow burned through what monies came in, and plied his wiles to the development team, convincing some of them to stay without a paycheck for up to a year, with promises that all would quickly be righted upon game release. If even half of what I read was accurate, SGW's failure was squarely on his shoulders.

As to a ton of content, if a picture is worth a thousand words, what are dozens of pictures worth?
A Google image search will provide a good idea of what was lost.

Well, according to the Stargate wiki... it was this:
On February 19, 2010, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the development company for Stargate Worlds and Stargate Resistance announced they had filed for bankruptcy, due in part to alleged illegal dealings from the company's now former CEO, Gary Whiting.

The wiki also does a pretty solid job of telling everyone just what we lost. :(

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.p3OEBPD6HU3QI.jpg

My brother got to play Stargate Worlds as part of a limited Alpha release.

He only played as a human (though Asgardian was supposed to be coming).
He said it was pretty cool to look at, and some of the content was really well done, but it was truly an Alpha and there were a lot of crippling bugs.

There were lots of instances of falling through the map into an infinite abyss, and spontaneous character deletions...

Oh, and the NPCs were easy to kill. He enjoyed killing NPC Daniel Jackson (to see if he'd ascend :P) But I really think he was secretly a Jonas fan.

Yep, I remember reading that in the article now that you mention it.

    Seriously though,
    what a shame.
They could have had never ending content just based on new gate locations, expasions wouldve been easy for writers to produce, the gate would also serve as the perfect pve queue.
Aliens species could be conjured up at will to match new content. They wouldve had almost no limitations on where the stories could go.

They really missed out on a great, self sustaining oppurtunity.
I'm pretty sure the IP holders are now very wary of creating a game, based on the Worlds disaster...probably why we havent seen much in development, though I do believe there is a mobile SG game. Not sure how that turned out, but they had plans to include the cast of SG1 for VO work.

Awwww man :(, well that's depressing.
If theyre ever going to do something, theyll have to enlist a big game developer. Blizzard or Ea (heiracy I know ! But they need the big guns if they're ever going to get it right)
They seem to keep getting burned. Sad, as I'm sure there's still a large SG fanbase.

I've often thought, be it TV, film, or game, there still a Goa'uld story to be had beyond the end of Stargate Atlantis (I'm not considering SGU since the 10 eps I watched took place largely in another galaxy. What happened beyond the 10 is a mystery to me.)

How, considering Ba'al the Last was dead? Easy peasy. Have the return of a branch of the Goa'uld and their Jaffa which were off doing deep space exploration, conquering, and pirating of new technologies. So these returning Goa'uld have new power rivaling our own Asgard/Ori-derived tech, and a serious need to hurt whomever put down their kin. That would easily establish an MMO storyline.

They were essentially already doing that with the Lucian Alliance in SGU, minus Go'uld and Jaffa.

Actually, not all the Goa'uld are dead. Ba'al was the last of the System Lords. IE imperial dictators. Others were still lurking in less conspicuous locations.

Well worth pointing out. Unfortunately, they're unlikely to be able to post a significant offense (or defense for that matter) against the heirs of Asgardian technology. Hence my suggestion of an outside group that brings new discoveries with them. But I'd be onboard should someone create a reasonable excuse for local snakeheads getting the tech needed to stand against the Tauri.

Folks tend to think there are more folks than there actually are...

It was like my initial reply...
There's a star wars MMO, there's a star trek MMO... why isn't there a stargate mmo?
You kind of answered your own question there...

It might rate a browser based MMO like BSG...but the folks just aren't there to support an actual MMO.

The Matrix flopped. Not to get into "DOOM!", but STO's not exactly crushing things.

The way they blamed things...heh...think it was more about the reality of the situation.

But it's still a trip to look at what was going on with it: http://www.giantbomb.com/stargate-worlds/3030-21343/
