I've been stewing over a feature that Cryptic could add to the game that would make things much more interactive and fun: Voice Commands.
How cool would it be to be able to go into a space battle and give voice commands in real-time and activate abilities that are currently slotted on your boffs. Or to say a command like, "Target and fire all weapons on (insert players' name) target." and the game would switch targets to that players' target and fire all weapons currently in that arc, etc.
I hear so much how player's want to be able to act like they are controlling what happens on their ship as if they were on the bridge. This would accomplish that.
Another really cool thing would be that since they are opening up sector space and dropping the walls would be to say "Set a course for New Romulus, Maximum Warp." for example, and the ship would turn and accelerate to full speed; then you could say "activate slipstream drive" to activate your slipstream, if able.
Voice Commands would open a level of interaction that would breathe new life into the game and draw new people as well, because you can literally act like the captain of the ship, instead of just clicking on things or hitting keys.
Finally, you could do it for both space and ground combat as well, because you can just tie specific commands to the abilities and have the game recognize what commands are available to you based on what you have slotted to your boffs and class specific abilities.
I know this would be a huge overhaul, but I think that a lot of players would be behind it.
Voice Commands would open a level of interaction that would breathe new life into the game and draw new people as well,
I agree, it would attract some new players...
...For about a week before players realize how imprecise, limited and overall adding nothing new, and before the developers realize they wasted a lot of time and money for a gimmick people will barely use when 3 clicks are faster and more efficient.
Remember the Kinect? Capturing your whole body movements, using voice commands and all, replace classic controllers, allow you new levels of immersion? How it was supposed to be the next new thing after the Wiimote, to revolutionize gaming, to allow a good Star Wars lightsaber game?
Yep, nowadays, as soon as a game is said to be made with the Kinect in mind, the overall reaction is either "How about no?" or "stop murdering my beloved series!".
Lets just hope they don't track what you say and sell it to GOOGLE....
Well, it would also be totally voluntary as well, a feature you can turn on and off, as well as being able to use it in tandem with the current system, like being able to click on things or say the command. In terms of security of what you say, it's really no different than using the in-game voice chat, a feature they already have.

There was person who went by the /nick DarrenKitlore. Darren always had these great ideas for STO. He would even create how the interface would look to run mini games he devised. Darren was very enthusiastic about STO, and so he tried very hard to make his ideas in game realities.
None of them ever came to be used. I would say he moved on, a bit demoralized. No doubt Darren went on to greener pastures than Cryptic could have ever offered him.
Long story short, 99% of the ideas we the players try to get Cryptic interested, never happen.
Your enthusiasm is to be commended, Zero. I'd hate to see you waste your time with something that probably would not end well, all things considered.
There is one thing, well now two, at least, you can look at in the game that was created by the players: The Odyssey FED Cruiser and the FED Veteran Starship. Both of these came from a contest held by Cryptic a while ago: the legendary FuzzyModem Fiasco, or, as Cryptic would say, the "Design the Enterprise-F" contest. You should be able to find all of this on google searches, if you're so inclined.
me- garrus, stop dying you idiot
garrus- attacking target
(garrus proceeds to stand in the middle of an open area and dies again)
yea, this'd be great, but as has been said of the npc's countless times, they really are too dumb to do much of anything with.
edit- case and point example is that sto's ai stand in the middle of open ground and activly seek to get seperated into whole different rooms to get ganked, by design.
True, the ground combat would be more difficult to implement, (or it could be explicitly restricted to space, which is where the game shines anyway.) but it would be just restricted to specifically activating abilities your boffs have. If they or the target are out of range, if would not work, just like it is now when you click it.
Computer: "Captain, our enemies facing shields are down."
You: Fire!
Computer: "Opening file"
You: FIRE!
Computer: ...Server Not Responding... (enemy continues its assault on your ship)
You: FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!
Finally the computer recognizes your order as a single photon torpedo leaves its launch tube as your ship explodes into a fireball in the void of space.
...how does that saying go about the well laid plans of men?
And yes, these ideas were probably already in the works. Or maybe someone read them and saw the responses and thought either, hey let's dust this off the shelf or lets put this plan into action. Who knows? But to the OP never be discouraged in voicing your ideas. Just because someone failed before you doesn't you will suffer the same fate.
Anyway, it was just a thought I had to get off my chest. If it happens, awesome. If not, then I'll continue playing the game as I always have. I'm not gonna devote my life to it lol.
Reminds me of the old PS2 game Lifeline. Which used Voice Commands to try and control a character.
That really didn't turn out too well; somehow saying things like "look" became "bark".
There was also another recent game (IIRC, for PS3 and X360) that had Voice Command as an optional extra control method; also with mixed success. Think it had a bit of a humans vs robot drama. Don't recall the name of it though.

Lol, I'm not talking about your computer itself trying to recognize the command, but the game itself. If the game doesn't pick up what you are saying, you can still use the keyboard and mouse like normal.
I'm talking about adding a level of interaction to the game, not replacing the current one.
I setup voice commands back in 12 IIRC, worked alright, bit laggy but useable, wife hated it though as I sounded like a maniac screaming during battle. I also used my NIA for a bit, nothing like using your mind to fire torps / alpha striking but again to unreliable to use fulltime. Need to be calm and relaxed for the NIA to work with any reliability.

What? Are you on drugs? If you think for a second that something you posted a year ago was the impetus for an already existing idea...I don't think I can even answer that, on the grounds of how ludicrous that suggestion is.
Put yer head back up your backside where it came from.
The apple computer has a built in voice command system, speakable items, it is called, I think. You can set it up for any computer program and add your own commands.
I set it up once for WoW. It was fun. So, you can already do it if you play on a Mac or you have to find a third party program.
Also remember that STO is using a game engine that's over 5 years old and probably couldn't handle voice commands. Hell half the times the voice chat system doesn't work right... and that's a lot easier to do then voice commands.
Add in different languages... accents (those Jo-gins sound a lot different then those Naw Yawkers)... and it's a mess.
I just imagine having Star Trek episodes or movies running in the background during a particularly violent episode and my crew not knowing if they should obey me or one of the greats of Starfleet history's disembodied voice.
I was going to suggest using one of the many available voice-recognition programs, but then I remembered that Cryptic/PWE/Arc are so terrified of teh haxxorz that not even Mouse Keys works in STO. To play STO, you must own a keyboard and mouse and use them in the normal way.
Alt/Shift/Control keys work best with the "record" option in VA, instead of the key press command.
I haven't used VA in STO in months now, but I did play with it for a while when I was running the Delta Quadrant storyline. Helped me out in a few of the missions that I wasn't quite strong enough for (kicking off powers I could never remember the keybinds for lol), but became too frustrating when I had to scream out the same command a few times before it would finally kick off
Frankly, in the time it would take you to say "Activate Emergency Power to Weapons Three" or something similar.. I could probably have pressed the buttons to activate a half dozen abilities.
While "neat", it's not really something that would be particularly playable.. even if it worked properly. Even if you shortened it to just numbers (such as saying "ONE" activated the ability in skill bar 1, slot 1) then you'd still be slower than just hitting buttons. Significantly so.
I think it'd be a really cool idea for Role Play. But...
One of the problems is that by the time you speak the commands for "Beam Array Overload" and "Torpedo Spread", someone NOT using the voice commands can mash a whole tray's worth of commands. Basically, it would be a feature that was almost never used.
Another problem lies in the fact that, while STO actually HAS a voice chat server, it has never worked as well as 3rd party VOIP programs. If they can't even implement Voice Chat properly, how will they make Voice Commands work?
Not to mention, a lot of fleet, groups, etc actually use voice chat when doing missions together. How would you get the program to recognize the difference between Voice Chat and Voice Commands?

activate tact team 1 ... activate tact team 1 .... redistribute shields .... fire all weapons ... fire all weapons ... fire all weapons ...
so that would slow players response times to any given situation .... cause tremendous lag and use up significant cpu ressources . also how the hell would you keep using TeamSpeak with that feature ???
FYI ... when siri hears your command , the command is sent to a server .. analyzed .. and then sends back the command to the phone . due to the high cpu power required to decipher our language and translate it into a command, its not as simple as it seems.
its no feasible at a reasonable cost , will require either significant bandwith or cpu resources . So its a 10000% bad idea . I would never fly a team mission with someone knowing they would be using a feature like that , because they will just be a weak link in the team PLUS they wouldn't be able to communicate with the team .

BS Example 1
Kind of BS Example 2 - read option 4 which is kind of being tested with the upcoming new alt event thing.

It has been done - so go do it yourself if you want it. It isnt something that the dev's need to spend time on as the technology is out there.

I was wondering, who was going to be the 1st, to post this information!
This software works but, does require some tinkering to get it to work properly, with use of the Alt/Cntrl/Shift keys.
