Useless hull armor

bjornfriedbjornfried Member Posts: 401 Arc User
So i heard that i am unable to use my hull protection to 100%. Than i read that i was alowed to go up to 75% before you guys reduce the prodection stats.
So I have to tell you.
Sorry that is not only unfair and stupid.
No, it dosnt even work!
I only get 51% at max.
No matter if i drop "this" one ore add "that one", it stays at 501% max.
Something needs to change.
i know that i had higher stats a few months ago.
Listen.
I dont care if you guys think that would be better for game balance.
I am an endgamer, so the npc's must suck in combat against me .
Its mandatory.
I mean you dont ask a firefighter to drop half of his fireprotection, just even the ods for th fire. Because that would be !? Stupiiiid! You got that right.
I know it is "only" a game.
But it is one that takes itself seriously to be part of the star trek universe.
That way it plainly isnt.
if a ship is fully protected against plasma burn's, it still gets the heat from the beam and the kinetic damage of the projectiles.
Thats more than enough damage.
So please stop that reduction bullcrap.
Thanks but i want the fun back in this game and no new ships.

Um... 100% resistance would be equal to immunity, aka total negation of damage, aka invulnerablity. We don't get resistance to procs, we get resistance to damage types.

Stacking damage reduction 100% isn't something most games are willing to allow, and for good reason. What would the point be if enemies are completely incapable of hurting you? There would be zero challenge.

As to being limited to 51%, I'm pretty sure I can get higher than that, and I don't even use armor consoles. There are continuous diminishing returns on resistance values to prevent excessive stacking and to promote the use of other effects and equipment, but I'm pretty sure it's still possible to reach 75% if you're REALLY intent on getting there.

Heh, I needed that after the T6 Command Flight-Deck Cruiser blog. Thank you. :D

EDIT (BEEEEEG EDIT): I just realized something, lol. I totally missed it originally. They can't be Flight-Deck Cruisers...they can mount DCs. So much like the Eclipse Intel Cruiser was its own thing, these Command Battle Cruisers are their own thing...bits and pieces put together, eh? Wonder if the KDF boats will have cloaks and the Rom boats will have battle cloaks...

...but yeah, I take it back - these aren't FDCs...they're their own thing. Tricky, Cryptic, tricky...I'll get you next time!

Not enough hullres is the least of your problems.

As for 51%, it certainly goes higher, and Plating isnt all that counts there, there are other methods getting more Res. Its basically the same as damage stacking, though that concept might be too... multidimensional for you.

P.S.: Funny as it is, the ship the NPC "suck" at most is the one with the least res in my entire collection :D

Yea that's because DR doesn't work like that.

If a console gives you +18.8 resistance to derp, that's +18.8 to your derp resist modifier not 18.8% dr vs derp. The game totals up all your resistance modifiers for that damage source and then feeds it to the DR function which looks like: DR(x)=(3*(0.25-(75/(150+x)^2)), where x is your modifier.

Sit down and do the analysis, or just feed it to a graphing calc and you'll notice that for low values of x the function is approximately linear (your first 10 points is wroth about 9% reduction) and then experiences greater and greater diminishing returns, asymptotically approaching 75%.

This is all old news. Resistance has always had very sharp diminishing returns.

Offense, OTOH, has no limits. You can go as far as the game and the player-know-how will let you go with no diminishing returns at any point.

Every Season, every Lockbox, every major update, pushes the limits of Offense further and further. Even at LOR's release, Resistance was the same as it is now... Sharp, diminishing returns. And even then, we thought of the immense offensive power creep that were the Romulans was staggeringly high already.

Then as the seasons passed since LOR, the offense across the board just keeps going up.

slotting armor consoles is a pointless in any case.

There are so many boff powers and doff abilities that simply throw hull resists at you, you do not need to add these consoles.

You will sacrifice consoles that ultimatly do nothing. Rather go get RCS consoles or stack some good universals.

    um...ok.

    Being invulnerable would be pointless.

NPC's generally DO suck against players. Even groups of NPC's. Exploding NPCs are where those magic skill points and expertise come from.

If you know how your skills function, you can compensate for incoming damage with little difficulty.

Your firefighter analogy is silly. You don't see firefighters go running to stand in the center of a raging inferno. If they did, they would get get seriously burned, or die. The same goes for your starship. You go running into the middle battle, and your ship will take damage and possibly get destroyed. Your skill, and knowledge of game mechanics can save you, if you choose.

This game is only as serious as you take it, like anything else. I find that the more seriously that something is taken, the less entertaining (fun) it becomes.

In the shows/movies the hero starships got damaged quite often, sometimes to the point of needing serious repairs at a starbase. They even got destroyed on occasion.

:D You getting blown up from enemy fire is canon. :D

Resist is only one factor of general survivability. We have gotten quite a few nice buffs to base capacity and healing, which are helped in their effectiveness by resistances.

Star Trek II: Damage to Enterprise's port side via point blank Phaser hit from Reliant, followed by torpedo strike.
Star Trek III: Enterprise still damaged from battle with Reliant. Self Destruct used to keep out of Klingon hands.
Star Trek IV: Captured BoP disabled by Whale Probe. Sunk to the bottom of San Fransisco Bay.
Star Trek IV: Enterprise-A suffers multiple torpedo hits to various locations. Excelsior suffers hits to the saucer section.
Star Trek Generations: Enterprise-B suffers serious secondary hull damage from Nexus Ribbon. Enterprise-D destroyed by hostile BoP.
Star Trek Insurrection: Enterprise-E suffers damage while fighting the Son'a. Sacrifices Warp Core to seal Subspace Tear from illegal weapons.
Star Trek Nemesis: Enterprise-E suffers Critical damage to forward saucer section after ramming Scimitar. Supporting Romulan ship Valdore damaged and knocked out of fight. Second Romulan vessel destroyed.
Star Trek: Kelvin destroyed in battle with Narada. Enterprise suffers damage from torpedo strike to the neck from Narada.
Star Trek Into Darkness: Enterprise knocked out of warp and suffers serious damage to various locations in battle with Vengence.

Several cases in the movies alone of hero ships being damaged. And I kinda count the Valdore as a hero ship as she was named.

I know, I'm also very frustrated because my ship is not invulnerable. I think this is very unfair, and I would very much like my ship to have 100% resistance.
I don't care much about the others, in fact, I would be fine if they weren't concerned by this change.

As to why, well, kinda obvious, because it's me. Silly question...

And before the revamp, I used to tank with my polearm guardian in age of conan. It was a lot of fun.

But somehow, I'm not sure our fascinating anecdotes from others videogames are actually of any interest here.

Sometimes I charge into combat without armor...
...cause I didn't check to make sure it was on the ship instead of in inventory.

While being 100% immune to all damage is one thing, I do feel defense and resists have been utterly left in the dust compared to offense. It's part of the reason why pvp is a tumble weed being blown through a dead town.

Agreed, it is one aspect of the mechanics that really could use some revision...

I don't PVP at all so can't comment here, but resists are completely pointless for PVE content I've found, just keeping cycling your CD's and you're sweet usually...

EvE Online Devs, I recall, used to fly around in ships with 99.999999% resists to everything; which is effectively just total invulnerability. No regular play should ever possess such powers.

No he shouldn't. If you want total invunerability you should play stand alone games with god mode cheats. I don't know any MMO i have played where a player can get a permanent invunerability, there are some temp ones as there are here.

And a Fleet admiral in a maxed out Maco Battleship should be the thing to fear for every NPC but in fact, they raise up to your abilitys and still kill you easy. That is the state after the last nerf attempt's from, cryotic. It is absolutely not plausible at all. So dont give me your "Cryptic maths". We know that they cant count for squad.

Neither of my Fleet Admirals are easily killed. They can solo Tactical Cubes on Advanced difficulty without fear of dying, and kill them in a reasonable amount of time. The only reason the NPCs don't fear them is because the NPCs are idiots.

All my engineering consoles are reputation consoles and a plasmonic leach, I idle around 40% damage resistance on the status screen and can spike it higher with various abilities.
