So in other words a game that's not free to play, and has no ground combat is the best you can do?
Sorry, try again, and if you really believed that why are you here and not playing Eve?
Just nothing but whining beyond anything I've seen since my last visit to Sonoma Valley.
With less grinding then what is required to play this game it is free to play.
The ground combat is so bad in this game i have played flash games with better gameplay.
We all get you love this game and are willing to defend it with your last dying breath so why don't you get back to playing it and off the forums.
No I don't like Cryptic or Pefect world, these new changes and how everything works is terrible. This ship upgrade TRIBBLE and all of it ****ing sucks... sorry but there's no other way I can say it.
I dont' know why people care that it's free 2 play. It's not free, it takes my time, my time (my life) is more valuable than mere money.
Just wanted to say "Thank You" to all who have posted here and again "Thanks in Advance" to those who will be posting.
I appreciate knowing how others feel toward this game the pro's and con's they see. I myself seem to get tunnel vision and get focused on one thing and can become unable to see the whole picture.

You didn't answer my question as to why you are here instead of Eve yet you want ME to leave?? Very funny.
There's not a chance in Diablo's hell that there is a flash game with better ground combat so why even go there? Take your soup box and throw it into the fire.
I happen to be here because I had a few extra minutes to kill between missions so I thought I would find out what the current topics were....obviously a huge mistake.
You, and everyone else, that haven't the capability to find a game that suits you yet want to cry, moan, whine, and stomp the floor here, need to seek professional help.

You probably have asked on a wrong day, with the rage going loose.
Like I said, the rage in the last fews days doesn't really involve the first 40 levels.
Maybe you can check some youtube channels like the one from Brent Justice "the doctor". He played all story missions on all 3 factions and he is also doing videos on ships, or any STO announcement and releases.
Had you asked me this a year ago, I would have said yes.
But over the past year (yes, even before DR) the answer is a resounding no.
Too many nerfs, too much placating low "It's not fair" whiners. You know, the ones that don't know how to do a decent build, so everyone else has to be nerfed so that everyone is on an 'even playing field'.

Just hopping back to say, I find the ground combat far superior to the ship combat. I particularly like he squad level aspect, which makes me dislike several of the new feature/episodes where I don't get my boffs.
Ship builds are more interesting than ground builds, but ship combat is much more boring than ground combat to me.
No ... too expensive to reach competitive levels. Having alts time consuming. Nerfing trajectory of the game is clearly to make sure dil is spent on upgrades.
Endgame woefully lacking in rewards and i believe now they have messed up xp gain. Reccyed the game to 7 friends two months ago ...im the only one left playing. Most have just moved to eve online for their space entertainment. Too much Pay Wall Entertainment PWE styled game.
Which is actually funny to me ... moving from f2p to subscription lol. But it seems on doing a weekly calculation 3 of them spend less per month on eve than sto lol. Well I like star trek so I still play but nit for too long.. they need to really listen to the player base a bit more.
In its current state i wouldn't recommend STO to anybody
Personally i'm not entirely happy with STO myself. BUT i will not gtfo because there is no other Star Trek MMO for me to gtfo to. I dont play this game because its a space sim mmo or because its sci-fi mmo. I play it because it is a STAR TREK space sim/sci-fi MMO game. Any generic game like Wildstar, EVE, Rift i dont really care too much about because it isnt based off of anything i know. But games like STO, SWTOR and WoW are all based off of popular IPs. STO and SWTOR make you go "OHH OHH OHH its that ship/guy/place from the shows and movies!!! WoW is based off of Blizzards previous RTS ******** Orcs vs Humans 1 and 2 and then WC3. Some people that played WoW called its graphics cartoon-ey but i actually understood why the buildings and characters were designed the way they were and it was cause i played the original WC1 and 2 back in the day.
Hello,
I am asking for others thoughts and feelings on this question, obviously I have my own opinion but I'm hoping to expand my point of view.
If you choose to reply a simple yes or no is fine, but it'd be great if you would explain you position. Having said that this in not a Pro/Con Cryptic thread so there is no need to attack or 'correct' anyone's opinion since that's what I'm asking for anyway.
So on to the question:
Would you recommend STO to a friend?
Thanks in advance!
-Glass
No. While I may something invested into the game, I would not recommend STO to anyone of my friends.
After three years, I would not recommend this game. The content is great if your a Star Trek fan, and it's enough you keep the casual gamer occupied for a while.
It's in the end game that the entire process falls apart.
1.) The casual gamer can never hope to attain end-game satisfaction.
2.) Goals and rewards keep changing.
3.) Its buggy and Cryptic has no intention of improving the player experience. Simple UX faux-pas.
4.) Cryptic ignores paying customers.
After this launch and another $250 wasted, it's time to Let it Go!
I would not. It is so bad at this point I think I am going to play swtor or some equally meh game even though i just dropped 125 for the operations pack.
I would have in the past, but now? No, definitely not. This game is entirely hostile to new players... and old players for that matter, but at least vets have a leg up.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I was one of the people who first identified the Deadly Intent bug. Cryptic verified it, and added it to their known issues list for a while. When DR came out, they swept it under the rug. I went back to the thread, got nothing. It's not they first time they did this, it won't be the last, but they react THIS FAST and this disproportionately whenever something in the game, that had been working as intended all this time, suddenly benefits the players.
Their attitude is clear, and so is how they think of us, and i will take no part of subjecting anyone i call a friend to this TRIBBLE.
The extent at which Cryptic is attempting to drag out the paltry amount of content they developed behind severely reduced XP rates, dampening XP from previous content and such...I wouldn't wish that on any gamer I call a friend.
To that end, I plan to button up my characters, advise my girlfriend to do the same, and we'll be pulling out of STO, likely tomorrow night. I've had enough, and Cryptic calling the playerbase exploiters for doing whatever they can to get around the ridiculous XP scheme they put into play for DR is enough for me.
I bought the Guardian and Dauntless classes. I now wish I hadn't, after experiencing just what a grind this new expansion is.
Long Story Short: I will advise any gamer that asks me to stay away from STO, and from Cryptic, like the bubonic plague.

I'm thinking maybe pancakes." ~ John Casey
If I were asked, I would have to say that with the price of the basic game I'd tell 'em "Why not?" And that after a few months, if they enjoyed the end game grind, they could show their appreciation with a purchase or two. But I would caution about delving too deep into the store - useful services only - and caution that unless they had money to burn, buying ships is a long term investment that *will* depreciate greatly and quickly.
I wouldn't, but not because of these butthurt whiners' excuses of bugs and all of that. I know my friends and I know they're not into Star Trek, so I wouldn't try to push them
Of course I would...I don't see any reason that I wouldn't. Sure, the game is far from perfect - but no game I've ever come across has been anywhere near perfect either. I would recommend that they stay away from the forums though or maybe ease them into the forums...the forums can be a rough place and easily lead to one questioning the continuation of our species.
I agree, I would recommend and do several times as this is a game not any different than monopoly, you play on a computer so with any program there are bound to be bugs and issues. With that said the whole problem here is that people make this out to be more where they have to have the best gear, they want it now but they want it free.
It's a game play to play not try and out do everybody else
Before DR, yes, I certainly would have (and did several times). After DR.... Let's work out these issues and get the game properly patched first, shall we?
Until today, I would have (and have) unquestionably, but now, after the way current events have been handled, I don't believe I could in good conscience. Like I've said before, I like STO but not the people behind it...and now I don't trust them either.

This pretty much captures my feelings on the matter.
Now? No. Three reasons. out of date ui. no updated space skills for science. and their recent adoption of DR.
DR has killed many a game in the past, granted those games were from new companies with sub only games but the principle is the same. It saddens me that they've done this it really does because anytime this happens, the game begins to struggle to make money because players just don't play around with in game progression or earnings.
Sadly, No. STO just takes too much time. Just too many time gates, and it's just not fun anymore. Nothing like waiting 360 days to max out all your R&D schools... Noobs just start too far behind. Being years behind veteran players. Too much stuff you need to PVP effectively also...
The dress is gold and white. Over 70% people says so. When viewed from a certain screen angle it appears blue and black. The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.
I can't even convince MYSELF to stay logged in for more than the time it takes to update rep/R&D projects in a vain hope that things will improve in the future..
I'm might suggest people play through to 50 for a fun little arcade-y space combat game, but to not even bother trying to get to 60, much less even try to do anything 'end game'.
There are a number of people that I simply haven't even tried to talk into coming back to check out the expansion. It's simply not "fun". (It's outright exploitative.)
Never i even Regret purchasing my Lifetime membership sometimes this game is now Broken Cryptic does not see players anymore all they see are $$$$$$ its not right

the only reason I log in for a few days every 6-8 months is because I'm a sucker who picked up a LTS back in the pre-beta days.
These days the game is simply not new player friendly, hell it isn't even old player friendly anymore.
With less grinding then what is required to play this game it is free to play.

Agree 100%
Oh and fixed the virus reference for you to something more current with todays news events.
Meh. I fear the Black Death far more than Ebola. It certainly has a much longer fatality list than Ebola, at least at this point in time.
But to each their own. I'll give you your cookie for keeping it current.
