I will say this though @askray, maybe that sticky thread just needs to go right into the "this is what the devs need from you" and go right into the steps. I guess the 3 or so paragraphs of fluff text is too much for some people so maybe cut that out or just condense it into 1 sentence "if you have lag issues, IE rubber banding, server not responding, etc etc do this".

But one thing i am curious about is the nettest and pathping. Are those two absolutely necessary? on the few occasions i've had problems with the WoW servers i've only ever done tracert. Just wanted to ask as i'm about to go through with the rest of the procedures.

Askray said that it was clearly localized because there is not a flood of these threads, I told him to wait.

Ahhh, the power of actually reading the news on the news page...

    http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/7006023-network-maintenance-on-9%2F18-at-6am-pdt!

Did you really think that network maintenance wouldn't be followed by a few teething problems?

Okay folks, so I've merged DOZENS of threads into one. You guys really need to not do that as if we get any information we'll only reply to 1 not all of them ;)

Anyways, from what it's looking like, the majority of issues is over with so if you're having network issues still you will need to actually follow the guide below (that's also a sticky) so they can narrow down specifics. If you're unwilling to do so, do not reply complaining about it as I will just delete your post. This is for those that are willing to get help and help the team at the same time.

What the Devs Need from You to Fix the Issue:
    1. Tracert test results (see below)
    2. Nettest results (see below)
    3. PathPing results (see below)
    4. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or who your purchase internet access from.
    Test Summary:
We'll run two tests. The first is a called tracert and measures how quickly various connections between Cryptic and you respond. The second is called nettest and gauges how much data can be passed at once on various ports.

    Test 1: tracert
    • For Windows, hit the start button
    • Where it says Search All Files and Programs, type CMD and press ENTER
    • The first result should be cmd.exe
    • Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    • A black, command-prompt window should appear
    • From here type the following command:
    • tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com
    Good Results:
    • Values lower than 180 are ideal for playing MMOs (and anything under 100 is outstanding). Higher values usually cause lag and rubber-banding in-game. Report any values above 180ms. Right-click in the Command Prompt Window and select all. Save as a text file (txt).
    .

    Test 2: nettest
You'll see several columns. The ones we're focusing on have KB/sec to the right of a number value.

    Good results:
    • Column 1: ~300-500 KB/sec
    • Column 2: ~20kb/sec
    • Column 3: ~300- 500kb/sec

Report the Port Number and which columns are below the average ranges.

    Nettest can be copied by:
    • right clicking on the window title bar
    • select Edit then Mark
    • highlight the text by holding the left mouse button
    • hit enter to copy to the windows clipboard.
    • paste into notepad or word and save as TXT
(thanks PegasusMD for nettest copying instructions)

    Test 3: pathping
    • For Windows, hit the start button
    • Where it says Search All Files and Programs, type CMD and press ENTER
    • The first result should be cmd.exe
    • Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    • A black, command-prompt window should appear
    • From here type the following command:
    • pathping patchserver.crypticstudios.com
    Good Results:
    • Realize this may take a few minutes to run.
    • You can just copy and paste it (using the method for nettest) into a post for someone to look at however anything with a 100% packetloss isn't good and can cause problems..
    .

    Final Words:
When posting a problem, be sure to include the tracert text file and also the nettest results.

    Sporadic ISP Issue Fix:
The below is not guaranteed to work but might help solve some issues with your ISP. Using the Post Office analogy, this is like getting a new address and having mail delivered there.
    Renew IP Address
    • Go to Start Menu
    • Search for cmd
    • Right-click and "Run as Administrator"
    • Type the following: ipconfig /release
    • Hit Enter
    • Now, type ipconfig /renew
    • Hit Enter

Cogent was the problem a few weeks before and for about a week after LOR hit, as well.
(DStahl even admitted as much back then, in a forum post)

I've been getting a lot of lag and bounce-outs the last several days myself.

When I do a trace, it invariably shows that the connection in Boston (cogent) is the problem.
(Cogent BTW, is apparently the Server Farm that PWE/Cryptic uses to run the game)

I can only surmise that either Cryptic or Cogent is somehow mucking up the process of communication, while adding the new expansion to the game and are probably trying to adjust the amount of data passing through their servers at the lowest possible capacity.
They are probably trying to save costs by starting with the least amount of new server capability and slowly adding more bandwidth (or whatever it's called) till we stop complaining.

That's why we spend the first week or so after a major addition to the game, all trying to get through to what is probably just enough capacity to hold 3/4's of us.

They are right now running three versions of the game (Holo/Tribble/Redshirt) through the same amount of servers that normally only have to deal with two.
And with Tribble being inundated with large numbers of testers, Holo being on the uptick with folks stocking up, plus people fiddling on Redshirt, it's creating a pile up that the Boston connection isn't prepared to handle.
And PWE, I'm sure, doesn't want to pay for anymore server bandwidth than necessary and which won't be needed after DQ hits and we go back to just the two play areas. (Tribble will be a ghost town and Redshirt will be gone again)

ya after it leaves my area ISP it goes to TRIBBLE . this happened the last time COGENT was having a hissy fit . so i would suggest that seeing Crypitc/PWE a customer of having your servers behind there wall that cyriptic PWE contact them . its not my isp thats throttling according to them .

I have played STO since day one of release, lifetime subscription, and have had zero problems. I have bought every expansion including the upcoming Delta Rising. Since Thursday’s maintenance, I have had the same problems as everyone else. I feel I am paying good money for this game and I expect service to be rendered. This is day two of me being unable to play with the problems STO is experiencing. I am to understand that even our own Devs, during a live stream, is having this problem. If this where too happen with my job, my boss would like to know why I am not producing the paperwork on a timely manner. So I expect for a game that I pay for, to take the same attitude in fixing the problem, or at least advise your customers of what is being done about; a time frame when things will be fixed

Thanks, it kinda-sorta ended up being more of a STO Klingon Theme song than a essay about lag and such.

    heh...

Sure, the odds are, with the large number of players located all over the world, it's not ALL going to be about the servers in Boston.

But I'll bet I'm not too far off the mark.

So are these normal post-deployment/maintenance proceedings for STO?
I only just started playing, but I can safely say that--bar the occasional genuine error and/or forced rollback--in every single other of the dozen MMOs I've played over the years everyone was able to continue their normal gameplay routines in the immediate wake of a downtime.

once again is a fight between cogent and other ISPs that route traffic thru them .
this has happened before , its a move to get something out of these bigger traffic ISPs , Cogent is big over seas but has a small hold in the US ., my suggestion is to cover all your bases , tweet / email call which ever you prefer both your ISP and COGENT to fix this . i suppose you can include Cryptic/PWE too if you want . but by coming here they should be aware of the issue so not really necessary
    .

i booted up some other games and have no connection issues to them , if PWE wants my money then they should get on top of this ,if i cant play there game dang straight im going somewhere else to play and purchase .

For me, it didn't start happening until AFTER the network maintenance. Before that, everything was working perfectly. Now I can't even stay online long enough for a daily Defera run.
I completed a 2-man CSE, ISE, and KASE, Optionals included. And I soloed Winter Invasion.

Second that feeling...time for someone to get another hamster to push those servers:D:D:D

Im unable to connect since yesterday after the maintenance. First the launcher loads really slow if it even loads. When i manage to get to the character screen my characters take ages to load. Then when i select the character i want to play with, they beam up and thats as far as i can get, the game never starts.

There is a really big issue atm and it would be nice if they would give us an update about it.
