The set is Bind to Account on Equip - the screenshots I provided for the blog were just on gear I had already equipped, and thus it was bound to me. The whole draw of R+D is making gear for other people as well as yourself, and that includes the endgame gear available in the system.
The old set is upgraded to the new stats.
Players who were able to craft AEGIS in the old system will receive the Duty Officer that allows AEGIS crafting for free when the new system launches, as well as a title for progressing that far in the previous system.
Players who gained any XP at all in the old system will receive the "Dabbler" title as a reward when the new system launches.
will you need to have the set in inventory in order to get the DOFF?

I'm pretty sure it's not based on whether or not you actually have or ever had an Aegis set, but is based on old-school R&D XP being high enough to craft it.

Actually, it is based on if you currently have it with you. All Aegis equipment will be changed to the Mk XII version. It doesn't matter if it is on your ship, in your bank, or equipped on another ship just as long as you currently have it.
Given that Adjucatorhawk just said in the Tribble Feedback section that they expect it to take 6 months worth of work per school, I seriously doubt anyone is going to get this new Aegis set within a year.
Heck, knowing Cryptic it will be obsolete by the time Season 10 rolls around.

There is the Finish Now button in Crafting so we either wait 6 months per school and do it for free or spend a ton of dilithium and get it done in a few days.

Vetteguy was asking about the doff, not the set upgrade. That ought to happen automatically to Aegis parts no matter where they are. But the awarding of the doff is based on progress under the old system.

The Exchange still doesn't have a Kit Modules category.
There is the Finish Now button in Crafting so we either wait 6 months per school and do it for free or spend a ton of dilithium and get it done in a few days.
And that there is the milking scheme. You either get slammed with very long development or pay out the TRIBBLE now to get done in a decent time.
I'm not a crafter, but I think it would be nice if the maxed crafters in the old system got a tribble that gives you bonus crafting XP in the new system. Even 1% would do, it would mean that your previous efforts result in a tiny bit less work in the new system..
Heck, accolades give bonuses, don't they? Maybe they should incorporate that into the accolade, a tiny XP boost.
... Or something like the rep commendations... Once a rep is finished under one character, the commendation doubles the points. All max crafters could receive a token to double the points earned in a school...

I need to correct myself, in the interest of full disclosure.
I was on my Cell ship yesterday (or was it on Sunday?), and since there's an R&D console there I took a look to see what my crafting was at. I did remember I hadn't maxed it out, but it turns out I was at 1620 xp.
One item later, I am now a maxed crafter. I guess crafting was so uninteresting with so little benefit that I'd completely forgotten that, once upon a time, I had grinded it. :P

I'd just like it to be an account feature. For each school its going to take at least 6 months of grinding assuming you don't just keep funeling D into the blast furnaces. Even with some sort of alt fast track that's still going to be a monumental expense and it will ONLY provide you that second/third/nth time round with the end-school bonuses. The main benefit to crafting, ie. crafting, is redundant to obtain for multiple characters since you only need ONE to be able to produce gear. So why not just bring it all under a single account anyway (with a pool of available project slots to preserve that limtiation) and spare people the prospect of either choosing ONE crafter (which is essentially designating a main for all time) or having to build something perhaps at the scale of a fleet base just for some small stat buffs to carry over between toons.

The items are showing bind to character on equip, is this intentional or a small oversight?
stats look the same to me however the set powers are different.. and worse than what Aegis was before. the 3 set power has a couple minute cooldown.. and the mechanis is simular to the vesta shell (and a few other set abilities).. I think I crafted Aegis sets for my 5 main toons for absolutely no reason at all. i shoulda plunked them on the exchange
Myself and everyone else I've talked to who were able to craft the Aegis set previously did not have their sets updated, and did not get the Aegis doff. I'm going to guess the second maintenance scheduled for today has something to do with this?
Edit: Ok, I did get the Aegis doff, my roster was full but it showed up once I cleaned out a few whites. I suspect that may be the case as well for the friends I had talked to as we're all "hard core" doffers and usually have full rosters.
If I make this new one can I go on and on about it 4 years from now on the forum?

"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
Supposedly you are able to craft the Aegis set straight away if you had it under the old system. can we say big fat no? you have to level up 240 xp points (in my case shields since I'm crafting it for comparison purpose. and at 6 xp per craft, and then getting the other components crafted to make it... I'm probably looking at a 3-4 day event if I devote all my game time to it...
Kind of ironic: Since before the S9.5 crafting announcements, I started crafting an Aegis set for each of my toons, There may be better ship sets out there, but I do like the Aegis.
Sure, I could buy the Aegis from the Exchange. There are plenty of Aegis deflectors, engines and shields available for a few mil EC each. Now, I wonder if those items will spike in price, once this thread is better-known amongst the sellers. Suddenly they're going to be very, very rare items (moreso for those players who don't want to craft).
Other than some rule of acquisition I'm not aware of the prices for MK XII Rare/VR items are markedly over priced compared to MK XI Rare/VR. I would think the price of those items drop in price as they drop out of favor because people are now saving for Ultra Rare craft made items.
It COULD lower prices as items sit longer without being sold then drop in cost.
I'm just glad I crafted an Aegis set right before this. At least I have something now. From the sounds of it this new mechanic will put you on the mega grind. I got the old Aegis in less than a week.
So, I am interested in knowing for certain from the Dev's, that if we currently have not crafted before, and do not have currently a way to obtain this doff for AEGIS crafting, how else are we to be able to craft such a set?
Are we able to obtain this doff, with the new system by getting it high enough, or is there some other way of obtaining one, or is there no way of obtaining one?
So they made Aegis Bind on Acquire. That's funny and it defeats one of the main points of crafting.
Whaaaa? I'm glad I bought two back when. But why Bind on Acquire? That's like, bogus, fer shur, like, totally. This was a way for players to earn some EC, and a way for other players to get a nice set by spending EC. *shakes fist and turns to Subcommander Satra* Release the Vivver Cats!

so uh, what exactly does 'free' actually mean since it doesn't mean 'aegis takes no materials to craft'?
because i notice no difference in my ability - or lack thereof in this case - to craft aegis between characters that DO have the doff and ones that don't...no difference whatsoever
as far as i can tell, the so-called 'special aegis doff' is just a standard blue development lab scientist

That would be too confusing for new players. And adding it would increase the download time of the game client.
So it's being kept removed. Because of their high standards of quality. This design team is top notch.

it was in a dev blog that it WILL be updated.
it was my impression that the DOFF makes it so you do not HAVE to have level 15 in the areas you would normally need
Oh, I already know about existing ones being updated way back here.

Has Cryptic ever played another MMO? Do they even know how MMO crafting works?
The Romulan faction is basically just another way of playing the same factions we had before, it's just a different aesthetic. Sad but true.
