Not saying this should happen but what if. Everything the c-store was free or at least took a big price cut...but there is now ads in STO. Nothing big most of the time but ads still.
Adverts inside STO? Endless screens of them, all which I have to wade thru just to play?
So someone can get a Z-Store shiny at a reduced rate or for free?
Which is, I strongly suspect, what you're really after OP.
No. I would stop playing STO faster than a Ferengi can hide his latinum from the taxman.
You were correct though. It is a bad idea.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Depends if the adverts affected immersion or gameplay.
If you simply mean replacing existing loading screens with adverts, i would suffer that for reduced prices. immersion is not something that really bothers me, and while id much rather look at a nice graphic of a space station than a picture of a pepsi max, i'd take the annoyance if it helped me financially.
if there was an increase in loading screen times, or adds put in on top somehow then no, i would not want that. thats going from affecting immersion to actually affecting gameplay.
either way, its not going to happen so dont worry.
I can't see the harm in product placement though ... Imagine if they sold Coca-Cola at Drozana Station? Or had Red-Bull banners painted on the side of Ferengi Freighters?
Or seeing an advert at ESD for an SUX60000 Hover Car ...
Okay, as a lifer, here's my take: We already have what are effectively ads on loading screens. I would not mind ads for other PWE games or other stuff put on the loading screens. I also would not mind a banner ad on the mission journal, in the place they sometimes put a bit about an event, right now its advertising the Dyson Mark weekend.
For that, I'd say it would be fair to do the following: Remove all ships and items of functionality from the C-Store and make them available through fleet/rep/whatever. All species playable immediately, except Liberated Borg, keep that lifetime only. Restrict C-Store items to costumes and other cosmetic things, plus service and convenience purchases e.g. extra BOFF slots, ship slots, character slots, bank and inventory slots. Keep lockboxes and keep master keys in the C-Store, they make most of their money off that anyway, and I don't mind it as much as some do. After all i can just delete the boxes that drop for me.
Maybe keep fleet ship modules in the store, too. They're 500z, so a subscriber or a lifer would be able to get one a month for free, and you could require an FSM to complete whatever rep project or fleet store project to get ships previously in the C-Store.
That would make in-game ads worth it, if it was restricted to loading screens and banners in frequently used, but not obnoxious places.
I'd rather be shot in the masculine organs than have ads in STO. That's actually one of my biggest beefs with ARC--I don't want the ads that come with it. Loading screen in-game ads are quite enough for me, thank you very much.
I would leave. I am more for them introducing paid subs again. Hey I did my bid for king and country. I was a paying 6 month sub for 1100 days and then only going free because of them getting rid of vet rewards. I am loyal and bought every Uniform that is in cstore. I also own the Galaxy X, the 3 course Oddy, the TOS Bridge & Defiant pack. I have 18 BO's on my one toon! Extra Bank/Inventory slots and things I am sure I have forgot! You put a vid or pic add for Walmart between cut scenes I would be out of here at warp speed.
No ads....I think 500 is reasonable for a ship. I have seen what other "Free" MMOs charge. STO is not that bad some items seem to start out high for me. That is my only complaint
you can give players the option to buy ships and services (up to LTS) with a bigger cut, but have to opt for a month long (ship/service) advertisment bombardment, whereas a Discounted LTS would stay for a year.
if it adds a few seconds to my load screens I don't mind, so long as it isnt permenant and optional, and of course gimmie a cut off the price.
For everyone up in arms over it. This is pretty much a joke thread. I don't want it to happen. Odds of it happening is so small my ship can't give me a number. This was just a simple topic I wanted to see what everyone thought about.
Least it was not an other t5 Connie/Fed should have KDF levels of cloak/I want to be Section 31,Tal'Shiar,or Fek'Ihri/Rabble rabble rabble devs are nothing but ferengi rabble rabble rabble thread
So Cryptic already has a lot of your money. No big loss then!

I would not play if there were adds in the game...and I'm a lifer....
Qapla'!
I agree with this. I preordered the lifer and I'll be rather upset if I see an ad in game. I never have, and I hope I never will.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
To have product placement in the game in a property that has had none up until the jj films would be really out of place. I used to play need for speed online and getting afree car with corporate logos all over it was totally fine in that environment.
A TIME TO SEARCH: ENTER MY FOUNDRY MISSION at the RISA SYSTEM Parallels: my second mission for Fed aligned Romulans.
Really why do you even need cheaper ships and or for free..... 8000 dilithium a day x 10 with the 3 characters = 240,000 with this you buy more char slots once you change it into zen. Then in 10 more days you would have enough to well be making 600,000 dilithium a week. That's enough to get any ship of the zen shop.
This game is crazy easy for f2p to get cash shop items thanks to the dilithium exchange.
So no not ever and anyone who thinks this is a good idea is just....... well lets just leave it at that!
It's not a terrible idea. I'd be willing to suffer some loading screen ads for lowered C-Store prices.
Although, and I'm not sure if it was mentioned but here's an idea I just had. How about an option to support STO though loading screen ads for those of us who want to accumulate more Zen. Like every ad gives 10 Zen. With that and the idea being that it would be an Opt in system. So people who want the game ad free don't have to see any ads in the game, but they don't get the trickle of zen that comes with it.
That would encourage enough people to enable ads to get a little bit on every loading screen, which would ad up nicely for some of us. Plus it would bring more revenue into cryptic, which leads to more development, and a longer lifespan for the game. It's also more exposure for advertisers and brands that pay to have the ads in games. So that will sell product for advertiser. Essentially, everybody wins.
lol does that mean we'd see big billboards around ESD advertising Coca Cola or something? or product placement, replace Quark's bar at DS9 with a Wal-Mart? naa that would be too weird

I was thinking more along the lines of an integrated banner ad system exclusively in loading screens. Because it'd be easier to track who saw what ad, and you would eliminate the chance of an ad going unnoticed, thus being wasted.
As I said before I'd support this if it was a opt in rewards system. We see enough loading screens, and there already ads for in game content in them. Might as well rope in some external ads for added revenue for cryptic. Ad space is after all always worth money.
Make a mcdonalds decal starship and type "I'm loving it" in chat whenever you kill someone in kerrat with it.
Actually, make it so you get different benefits depending on which corporation decal you have, so the corporations paying cryptic more will have their decals do better things so more people would put them on their ships.

Would you still play?
Imagine if you will, you go to the most populated instance of Sol orbit, where 75 others are flying around earth with your ship, now imaging that same scene, except with corporate logos splattered over all the vehicles and surfaces of ESD.....would you like it?

No, I'd rather watch the bloddy news that be bombarded with advertisements in the little spare time I spend here for fun and relaxation.

But now that the beancounters have seen this, it's probably as inevitable as ARC itself.
