A name may seem like an inconsequential arbitrary aspect in the full measure of one's existence. But to name someone at birth (or a new character), you inherently attach tendrils of possible destinies to that person in hopes for a better life than what you have received (which may explain why some of us come here). The tradition of naming a ship, is likewise one of somber contemplation in discerning which likely destiny you would choose for it. To name each of my ships, after a close friend here, honors the friendship which I have with each of them. And though they may not be online as much, I am comforted in that each discovery I make, is vicariously shared with their namesake. On that sentiment, I should close.

You all have alot of really good ship names. Mine started off with an old warbird (Kirk era, I think) which I named Ryo-Ohki because big things sometimes come in small packages. But then I made a really good friend on here and cristened my next ship after her. The Persephone.
Umm, am not exactly sure what a Persephone is, but because it relates to my best friend, I try to take care of this ship with focusing on shields and hull reinforcements. I think that I stayed with this practice and named all of my ships and shuttles after my friends. TheR.R.W Persephone, R.R.W. Aleka, R.R.W Julius.. and now I have a new shuttlecraft but haven't decided who to name it after. Can't use a guy's name, and there's just so many girls on here. Perhaps I should name it the Andromeda. That would be a pretty name for a cute small one-person Romulan shuttlecraft. :-)

My escorts are named Kimer Lynne (youngest daughter she is energetic). My cruisers are named Karleigh Ann (oldest daughter she is very persistant). My sciences ships are named James (my son who is very bright and methodical).
IKS QImmey Ho' is the starter ship for my new Gorn, Silisk. Since it is the starter, it is humorously named in Klingon (assuming the translator is right) for the first weapon a reptile ever wields. (translation: "Egg Tooth")
Most of my ships were named after famous ships in film and tv, like Sulaco, Roger Young, Event Horizon, Galactica, etc. But only a few ships I have are original names.
My current ship, a Mobius Temporal Destroyer with all temporal warfare sets, is called the I.S.S. Retrocausality. I named her since 1.) Causality is a time ship name, and 2.) the ships is from the mirror universe, so the name can be reversed. thus, "Retro" was added to the name.

In game I've seen hundreds if not thosends of ship names and most of them are unique. This made me curious to see if these names were chosen for a reason or just because it sounded cool.
My current ship is called U.S.S. SHIRLY WALLIS.
It's named after my mother inlaw who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Before that it was called the U.S.S. BECKS-VIER
after my favourite beer. Lol

Usually I just name them whatever seems a good idea at the time, but with my Fed character I actully drew up a scheme for them. Cruisers were named after a sun theme, and Science ships were named in more general space terms (Usually relating to the moon)
Hence, we got the Sovy-class Celestic, (Being a reference to celestial bodies like suns or stars)
This was soon followed by the Intrepid-class Luna (Meaning moon.)
When I got the Cstore Sovy, it was named Celestial in honour of my previous sovy, as well as keeping to the name theme.
When I got the Avenger, I named it the Twilight Spark as a reference to, well, sparks at Twilight which I felt was a pretty powerful image and worth naming a ship after. (For a while, it was called the Dragonheart as a reference to the movie but that didn't fit the theme so I changed it.)
Names which I considered, but never used include: Event Horizon ( a reference to the term, not the game) Solar Wind, Solaras, Aurora and Sword of Stars/Blade of Stars (A reference to SoTS)
I've got a lot of ships so I'll just mention the main ones.
U.S.S. Fearless - Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit - Thought the name was appropriate since I tend to charge into the middle of everything.
R.R.W. Rex Aquilae - Fleet D'Deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser Retrofit - Latin for King of the Eagles. The D'Deridex will always be "the romulan ship" for me since I grew up watching TNG so I thought it appropriate to call it King of the Eagles.
I.K.S. Malleus - Fleet Tor'Kaht Battle Cruiser Retrofit - Latin for Hammer. Not only does the ship sorta look like a hammer (Using Vor'Kang neck and bridge) but also the ship "hammers" its opposition hah. Yeah cheesy I know!
The boss being a gigantic Winter Epohh Researcher. As you lay waste to the Epohh Horde, she can occasionally cry out things like, "Didn't you want an Epohh friend?"
U.S.S. Rhea - Ambassador-class, Yamaguchi variant
Random name chosen for her by the game. Chose to keep it for the double meaning: Rhea refering to the greek goddess and in STO lore, the first Ferengi in the Federation (as a citizen).
U.S.S. Misawa - Odyssey-class
Named for Metroid's K.G. Misawa who was named for Mitsuhru Misawa, a professional wrestler.

I've also flown the Livermore, Jay, Effingham, Tamworth, and think my next will be the Wonalancet. I considered the Mechanic Falls but didn't care for the sound of it. U.S.S. Magnetar - Tier 4 Intrepid. I named it after a type of star
U.S.S. Espada - Mirror Universe Patrol Escort. Latin for "sword"
U.S.S. Moya - Obelisk Carrier. Named after the ship from Farscape.
Hence, we got the Sovy-class Celestic, (Being a reference to celestial bodies like suns or stars)
This was soon followed by the Intrepid-class Luna (Meaning moon.)
When I got the Cstore Sovy, it was named Celestial in honour of my previous sovy, as well as keeping to the name theme.
When I got the Avenger, I named it the Twilight Spark as a reference to, well, sparks at Twilight which I felt was a pretty powerful image and worth naming a ship after. (For a while, it was called the Dragonheart as a reference to the movie but that didn't fit the theme so I changed it.)
Names which I considered, but never used include: Event Horizon ( a reference to the term, not the game) Solar Wind, Solaras, Aurora and Sword of Stars/Blade of Stars (A reference to SoTS)
U.S.S. Fearless - Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit - Thought the name was appropriate since I tend to charge into the middle of everything.
R.R.W. Rex Aquilae - Fleet D'Deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser Retrofit - Latin for King of the Eagles. The D'Deridex will always be "the romulan ship" for me since I grew up watching TNG so I thought it appropriate to call it King of the Eagles.
I.K.S. Malleus - Fleet Tor'Kaht Battle Cruiser Retrofit - Latin for Hammer. Not only does the ship sorta look like a hammer (Using Vor'Kang neck and bridge) but also the ship "hammers" its opposition hah. Yeah cheesy I know!

My wish list: USS Apollo: Ambassador Class: Named after the Apollo space-craft
USS Nautilus: Intrepid Class: Named after the submarine in the book 20,000 leagues under the sea, seeing as their both for exploration.
USS Atlantis: Excelsior Class: Named after the lost Greek city Atlantis.
USS Destiny: Sovereign Class: Who knows what's next?
My reasons? All of these names, to me, says " I'm going there, and no one's gonna stop me."
Currently, I've got:
- USS Kingfisher (Armitage Escort Carrier) and its attendant shuttle, the Anastasia, named from classic British SF Dan Dare (It's in the impulse engines sir!)
- USS Lethbridge (Patrol Escort, after Doctor Who's brigadier - FIVE ROUNDS RAPID!)
- USS Tiger Moth (NX class for RP / diplomatic purposes, named for the WWI fighter aircraft).
- IKS Dub'Hos (Bortas'qu class, literally "Strong Back")
- IKS Mahar (Vo'quv, named for the evil telepathic pterodactyls of Tarzan)
- GHS Gharial (Varanus, with a Gorn captain - continuing the theme of naming Gorn ships for reptiles but at least not an overused name! A Gharial is an Indian river crocodile.)
