U.S.S. Renegade is my fed tac's ship name, it's an homage to an audio drama that I listen to (and proofread the script for. Starship Excelsior, for those who were wondering.)
U.S.S. Oracle is my fed engy's ship name, same deal as above, homage to the audio drama.
U.S.S. Descartes, my fed sci's ship name is an homage to Ren? Descartes.
All of my KDF/Romulan ship names are randomly generated.
My early level ships were named after places relevant to me. Sheffield, Chesterfield, Yorkshire etc. My Runabout for my main character was the USS Thames.
I went through a phase of naming them after Royal Navy vessels, Bellerophon, Indefatigable, Indomitable.
Tended to name my science vessels after scientists, both real and in the star trek universe, Fleming, Hawking, Heisenberg. That's until I got a temporal science vessel and wanted a time travel reference. I went for USS Idris, after the humanoid incarnation of the Tardis.
I never bothered much with the Klingon ship names for my Klink, tended to just stick with the default, until one day I decided to do some research into the language and named my tac ship the IKS veQ'Duj (IKS Garbage Scow)
I actually think this is a bit of a LoR weakness, there is very little information or usage of the Romulan language for us to come up with good sounding Romulan ship names. I have stayed with default names for Romulan ships.
I have a cruiser and escort with Japanese names. My escort is named "Ikazuchi" Japanese for thunder, and a name they give to navy destroyers, so fitting for an escort. My cruiser is named "Kongo" a Japanese mountain that they named a WW2 battleship after. Once i get a Armitage (been putting it off so I an buy with dil instead of spending money) I will name it "Shokaku" Japanese WW2 aircraft carrier meaning "Flying Crane".
Hope I don't sound overly pedantic, but: Kongo was a battlecruiser built by the British (for Japan, who was then an ally) in 1913, along with her three sister ships, Kirishima, Hiei, and Haruna. She was rebuilt between WWI and WWII, with better armor (but not great like the Yamato and Musashi had), and better boilers (oil-burning ones replacing the original coal-burning ones) helped give her better speed, among other things. I believe she and her sisters were considered fast battleships in WWII. Kirishima and Hiei were sunk in naval battles near Guadalcanal in 1942. Kongo was sunk in the South China Sea by the submarine USS Sealion II in 1944. Haruna survived the longest, sunk by US carrier aircraft in a Japanese port (Kure?) in 1945.
My dreadnought cruiser, NCC-93639 is named the U.S.S. Susano'o after the Shinto god of seas and storms and ruler of Yomi.
Going to name my soon to obtain Tactical Escort Retrofit the Amaterasu, Shinto goddess of the Sun and the Universe.

Arin, fed human:
Odyssey class cruiser - U.S.S. Invincible (The origin of the name has years. It's a ship I imagined)
Prometheus class MVAE - U.S.S. Prototype (The first build I made with borg set and romulan rep items. The ship was an actual prototype to me. Kept the name)
Ahllanna, kdf orion:
Bortasqu' class - I.K.S. Sto'vo'kor (Not much thought into this. I like the sound, and truly klingon)
Saeihr, fed aligned romulan:
D'Deridex class retrofit - I.R.W. Saeihr (What can I say, she is romulan. Egocentric)
Scimitar class dreadnaught - I.R.W. Invincible (She's modest, too)
Kahlyn, fed andorian:
Odyssey class cruiser - U.S.S. Andoria (Goes without saying, doesn't it?)
Torres, fed human:
Vesta class explorer vessel - U.S.S. Carla Patricia (The name of someone who was once - and apparently still is - very important to me)
EDIT:
Updated, the Carla Patricia is no longer a Odyssey class cruiser
my main char's ship is the U.S.S. Iron Fist. it is named after the super class star destroyer from the Rogue Squadron series of books. the ship and crew were the best the imperials had to offer and was the last super class ship built by Kuat Drive Yards when the Executor was destroyed over endor.
U.S.S. Eddison (Vesta) named after Thomas Eddison
U.S.S. Haverford (MVAE) named after Tom Haverford from Parks and Rec
U.S.S. Nelson (Gal-X) named after the great Admiral Nelson
U.S.S. Diamond (Ambassidor) named after the last warship I served on, HMS Diamond Type 45 Anti Air Destroyer
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] We've just received word from the fleet, they've engaged the Borg!
I have called all of my ships USS Alaska, which I am partial to as it was a unique design I came up with back in the 90's when I was role-playing:eek: Star Trek using the old FASA produced Star Trek Tactical set that allowed for ship combat.:P
My small ships are all based off the Alaska name, so they are Juneau and Valdez. I tend to stick with this - it works for me.
We were the Borg, you should have been Assimilated, your Biological and Technological Distinctiveness was not added to our own, instead ... you exposed us to kittens.
I named mine the U.S.S. Stryker, a ship that a few friends and I used back when we played SFC3 on LAN way back when we were in High School/College, I felt it would be a good way of remembering those good old days while keeping true to my ship, which was both Galaxy and Sovereign Class, I actually got the name from a Medical Supply Company and it kinda seemed to fit due to the meaning of the name.
Also, the USS Xale (In honor of a friend's ship)
USS Xaven (Another friend's ship)
USS Shogun (I like the ancient Japanese culture)
USS Ronin (Read above)
USS Falcon (In honor of my late dad)
What a cool idea for a thread, I named my Fed toon's ship "Lady Latinum" because it's not only a Ferengi D'kora, but I went all out and bought all things Ferengi. Because i'm very good at playing the Exchange! I am also well versed in the "Rules of Acquisition!" I named my Ferengi shuttle, Nirvana, I was eating ice cream at the time I named it and was happy! My other toon on the KDF side, uses the standard carrier, I named it "The Jolley Rancher" because its my pirate ship for raides and earning Dil, and I colored it pink and green like my favorite hard candy. Those colors have a history for this toon, Andromida was my old AD&D character, a Half-Dryad girl who wore pink and green.

I've only been playing for a few days, but I've already come up with naming schemes that seem to work for me.
My tactical officer's ships are named for military aircraft; his first ship was the USS Corsair, and his first escort the USS Tigershark.
I've just started my engineer, but his first is the USS Joyeuse, named after the sword of Charlemagne. The rest will also probably be named after mythical and legendary weapons.
My current main is a Fed aligned Rommie; who flies a ship named 'Llaekh-ae'rl'.
It's the Romulan word for their martial arts (soft canon I think), but translates directly as 'Laughing murder'; which is just plain cool.
It's didn't take much digging to find, so I doubt I'm the only one using it (certainly every other Romulan ship name I've used turned out to be a pretty common sight in game).
My ship is named after one of my favorite TOS episodes "The Omega Glory". USS Exeter. I had the name back in the day when the online Star Trek game de jour was Star Trek: Starfleet Command II. Since I just became a STO member/user a few days ago I figured there was no way in hell Exeter would still be around.
Which brings me to a newbie question, Can players use the same ship name or is every name unique?
My starting light cruiser was the USS Kagoshima, after a city in Japan I whose name like the sound of.
My cruiser was the USS John Paul Jones, after this guy who was one of America's first well-known naval captains. I also snagged the free C-store science vessel, which I named USS Makoto Kobayashi after the winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physics.
I moved up to the heavy cruiser USS George Hammond, because I love Stargate SG-1. I also grabbed the freebie Yellowstone runabout, which I named USS Glyrhond-A after a river on Bajor mentioned in DS9, because Starfleet names runabouts after rivers and my captain is Bajoran. The "-A" is because I justified my acquisition of the shuttle by saying she'd requisitioned it after the ship's shuttlebay was trashed by a torpedo hit and the existing shuttles totaled.
Then to the USS Bajor, a GCS, again because my captain is Bajoran. I'm currently flying the USS Relentless, a star cruiser, and for that one I just like the word.

...because Starfleet names runabouts after rivers...
A point that a lot of people seem to forget. Fortunately I live in a state with a lot of rivers, so my various characters' retinue of runabouts includes the Puyallup, the Carbon, the Nisqually, and the Hoh. If I get another one, I'll probably name it the Cowlitz.

"Puyallup" sounds like a comment made by mountain climbers in my (Southern) part of the States. I'm guessing it is a Native American term though?
I like having the river theme for runabouts. My two are named for local rivers and are elsewhere in this thread. I personally like the canon use of Orinoco and Rubicon. The names have a strong, cool sound to them, unlike the small, vital river in my hometown, the Reedy. As much as I love my home, I'm not sure I could name a runabout for that.

It's a smallish local tribe. It's also a lot of fun listening to folks from out of state try to pronounce it (as can happen when someone's playing Shadowrun, whose default setting is the Seattle arcology).
i cant remember all my ships names but i will give the two i use the most
IRW Ael'Hatham : (Winged predator in romulan) I named my scimitar that because of the winged bird theme the romulans use. ( Scimitar class dreadnaught )
USS Crazy Horse : To reflect my native american heritage and honor a great warrior (Excelsior Retrofit )
USS Nautilus : To commemorate the first nuclear powered submarine ( Intrepid class science vessel )
USS Yorktown : Idk its a cool name for a Galaxy-x dont you think? ( Galaxy -X dreadnaiught )
IKS Golden Hinde : Its an orion marauder class...so i named it after a famed pirate ship (Marauder class flight deck cruiser )
USS Kitteh Litter ....I bought an atrox ( Atrox carrier )
USS Shamu....I bought an oddy pack while i was drunk ( Odyssey class whale..i mean cruiser )
Well kiddies thats all i can remember off the top of my head
Why all the reptile names? First, I'm Gorn (in real life) second, I'm a geology major (in game...wait a second). One of the Geologist Commandments is to know dinosaurs better than every 8-year-old on earth. Once I run out of cool reptile names, I'll move into monsters from Norse myth, like I did with my Jem Dread.
Current ride: U.S.S. Black Hole (Fleet Deep Space Science Vessel)
U.S.S. Shadowchaser (Caitian Atrox Carrier--cool name, huh?)
U.S.S. Centaur (Galaxy class cruiser; support vessel) name derived from Greek mythology
U.S.S. Vanguard (Exploration Cruiser Refit) once again, cool name, huh?
U.S.S. Sentinel (Star Cruiser) Means "to guard over, as a sentry" Italian origin
U.S.S. Timestopper (Wells Temporal Science Vessel) the name kinda says it all, huh?
My three Vesta multi-mission Explorers:
U.S.S. Achilles (Reconnaissance)
U.S.S. Mercury (Strategic)
U.S.S. Olympus (Surveillance) all 3 names of Greek mythology people or places
Small craft:
U.S.S. Crusher (Aeon Timeship) named after Beverly or Wesley, take your pick
U.S.S. Bacco (Yellowstone runabout freebie) named after a former UFP President
and that's all for now. I will post my KDF and Rommie character ship names some other time.
Bluegeek, this is Starfleet Command. The tachyon detection grid has detected a cloaked Necro-class thread leaving the Neutral Zone.
