Mine are all named for towns I have lived near/in. I'm currently flying the Auburn and the Bangor. My first ship was the Freedom. I've also flown the Livermore, Jay, Effingham, Tamworth, and think my next will be the Wonalancet. I considered the Mechanic Falls but didn't care for the sound of it. Can anyone guess what two neighboring states I have lived in?
Hypatia was a female Greek scholar, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher at the Library of Alexandria. She was murdered by a christian mob because she publicly refused to be baptized (so, of course, she was accused of witchcraft).
Reminds me (and hopefully everyone) of how harmful any religion is to civilization.
Yeah, 'cause it is never ok to judge and persecute a group of people based on another group's conception of what they are about.

My ship is called the USS Renaissance because it sounds cool and it has the noble endeavor of enlightenment and re-awakening of ideas and to dare to think new thoughts and new ideas and ask the greater questions of our minds.

"I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment because it will never come again."- Jean-Luc Picard
I changed the name of my Odyssey a couple of times before I came up with one that I felt captured the Trek-like spirit of such a large cruiser, meant to explore strange new worlds (before the galaxy collapsed into a state of eternal war): U.S.S. Wanderlust.
...talking to players is like being a mall Santa. Everyone immediately wants to tell you all of the things they want, and you are absolutely powerless to deliver 99% of them.
The following are my main character's ship names and registry numbers. I was inspired by Patrick O'Brien's novels as well as the Horatio Hornblower series and more specifically the British Navy of the late 18th to early 19th century. So all of my ships are named after third to first rate ships of the line of that period and their commission dates are the registry numbers. They are labeled from most current to my first.
Captain T'Vol
Starfleet Service Number: 88-Omega-458
Current Main Starship: U.S.S. Ironside NCC-186225; Fleet Avenger Class Battle Cruiser.
This is one of four ships not named for a British ship of the period mentioned. I decided that the Avenger Class, being the first true war focused cruiser for the federation in my opinion was very similar to the Ironclads of the US civil war so I chose to name her after the U.S.S. New Ironsides.
U.S.S. Invincible NCC-190604; Odyssey Class Tactical Dreadnought.
This great lady was named for the HMS Invincible, the first true battleship of the 20th Century. I thought since both ships are and were the largest ships built my man for their respective times that it was an appropriate match. This is the second ship of the four.
U.S.S. Thunderer NCC-179301; Fleet Excelsior Class Advanced Heavy Cruiser.
This lady's namesake is the HMS Thunderer, a Culloden class third rate ship of the line. She had an illustrious battle record; most notably the Battle of Trafalgar.
U.S.S. Surprise NCC-179401-B; Fleet Regent Class Assault Cruiser Refit.
Being a fan of the Aubrey-Maturin Series, I used HMS Surprises name pretty much throughout the game until I joined a fleet. Some people might think she was a fictional ship being from the novels and the movie 'Master and Commander: Far Side of the World' but it turns out she was a real warship. She was a captured French warship that was renamed and had some success in the Caribbean dealing with privateers.
Named for one of the ships that Horatio Hornblower served on. HMS Indefatigable was also a real ship of the line. She was a 64 gun Ardent Class third rate ship of the line. When I got the galaxy I decided to not use Surprise for her so I named her Indefatigable and for every iteration of galaxy that I have purchased have kept the name.
U.S.S. MacAuliffe NCC-194412; Fleet Defiant Class Tactical Escort Retrofit.
This is ship three of the four not named for the Napoleonic period British ships. I decided to name her for General Anthony Clement "Nuts" MacAuliffe from The Battle of The Bulge. A name that I feel completely fits the 'tough little ship'.
U.S.S. Pegasus NCC-177905-A; Fleet Ambassador Class Support Cruiser Retrofit.
I really named this ship after the Pegasus that Riker served on, however as we can't use the registration off that ship I found a ship from the period I was using as inspiration of the same name. HMS Pegasus was a sixth rate 28 gun ship of the line.
U.S.S. Ajax NCC-179806; Vesta Class Reconnaissance Cruiser.
This lady is named after the HMS Ajax, a 74 gun third rate ship of the line. HMS Ajax also had an illustrious battle record and also served at the Battle of Trafalgar.
This is the fourth ship not named for the mentioned period. I was looking for an exotic name for the Chel Grett so I settled on Shiva the hindu god. Mainly because Shiva is also known as 'The Destroyer' which I felt fitted the Chel Grett.
on a fun note below are favored shuttles:
U.S.S. Bonaparte NCC-176908; Yellowstone Class Runabout.
obviously I named her after Napoleon Bonaparte, because the Yellowstone class is I think suffering from a Napoleonic complex.
U.S.S. Tremendous NCC-101784; Delta Class Advanced Runabout (Delta Flyer).
Also named after a british ship of the line. However I'm not sure I will keep the name as I don't think I want my shuttle craft named after warships, so I am still contemplating this.
I theme name my ships
Fed: types of classical music i.e. U.S.S. Concerto
Romulan: Latin bird names i.e. R.R.W. Accipitor
Klingon: types of meat i.e. I.K.S. Targ Steak

U.S.S. Heart of Gold - just cause I like hitch hiking through the galaxy.

USS Astral Queen, Sovereign Class.
I'm a BSG fangirl, and Galactica is almost a cliche these days. :P
USS Osprey, Mobius class. No real meaning outside of being a bird.
USS Endeavour, Odyssey class. NASA Shuttle name.
USS Thunderbolt, Fleet Avenger. Named after the closest IRL aircraft to the Avengers ideal; the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
AWS Aurora, Galor class. Because the Galor has always reminded me of Al-terren ships in Stargate Atlantis. (Yeah, i know DS9 was before SG:A.. but still.)
USS Nautilus, Galaxy X. Shes a beastie of a thing!
Prowler, Breen Raider. Farscape? No? Mkay.. :P
My Sci;
USS Ascension, Aventine tactical. Because Destiny Ascension wouldnt fit. (Mass Effect<3)
My Rommie (eng)
USS Delphi, Falchion class. My Rommie is named Athena. Get it? :P
Way back in the day when I was playing Star Control 2 I named my ship this. Part Greek Mythology and science fiction I suppose. The name has been passed down through various Space games over the years that I've played. It's an important name if not a silly one. Only the ship's I love using ever get named it.
U.S.S. Corvus/?/Constitution Class
Latin for Raven, the Corvus name came from a Role Play when Yahoo Chat was vibrant and prosperous with Chat Role Play. The Corvus then was a Small Escort Carrier in a Private RP for me and one other person. This name carries allot of happy memories with it.
Tactical Toon
U.S.S. Musketeer/NCC-93419/Assault Cruiser(Soon to be Assault Cruiser Refit.)
I named this ship for my love of my favorite book and an equal love of history.
Their are other ships. However, these are the most important ones to me.
Reason: I am a fan of Japan and some mythos. And one that interested me was that of the Amaterasu Or Okami which is Japanese for Wolf. I'm actually surprised the name wasn't already taken. I am sure I couldn't be the only one with that name for my ship... Right?

Actually, it's more that ship names seem to be registered per account, or at least per character - you can't name two of your own ships the exact same, but I do believe that two different accounts could have ships with the same name.
I thought I would jump in and have a go, so here are some of my characters and ships.
K'Orta, daughter of Mogh. Federation Klingon science officer. Goes by the tag "Doyvo'pung" - Klingon for "Angel of Mercy". Refugee from interhouse conflicts in the Klingon Empire. Current ship: U.S.S. Angel of Mercy - Vesta class.
Latta'jhu ir'Korthre t'Jhihansu. Federation Romulan science officer. Goes by the tag "Kholhr" - Rihannsu for "Vengeance". Refugee from the Tal Shiar attack on Virinat. Current ship: R.R.W Vengeance - Fleet Ha'nom.
Rebekah Mackenzie. Federation human engineering officer. Goes by the tag "Harlequin". Current ship: U.S.S. Valkyrie - Odyssey star cruiser. Valkyrie was the name of her father's starship - the one that rescued Doyvo'pung and her family.
K'Renn - Federation Catian tactical officer. Current ship: U.S.S. Swift - Advanced Escort.
Tar'taj (Klingon for "Poison Dagger") - Klingon engineering officer. Current ship: I.K.S. Poison Dagger - Qin Raptor
Deb'qagh (Klingon for "Desert Serpent") - Klingon tactical officer. Current ship: I.K.S. Hegh (Klingon for "death")
I didn't really go for any specific theme with ship names, just with what fitted the character the best.
Somewhere on the wrong side of insanity.

Well, for my Fed toon (a sci Vulcan named Confederate) I've got these ships stashed:
South Carolina
Arkansas
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Texas
North Carolina
Alabama
Mississippi
Virginia
With Louisiana being the one I've been using the most lately.
My Fed-aligned tac Romulan (named Yankee) has this lineup:
Ohio
Michigan
Maine
Pennsylvania
Kansas
Missouri
Vermont
Massachusetts
With Maryland being the toon's current end-game ship, though I'm saving up to buy a Fleet T'Varo, which I'll turn into a nice torpedo boat.
Yeah, I'm following a rather specific theme for both these. For my Fed toon, I'm saving up to buy the Vesta bundle, so I'll have to figure out how to keep to my theme, now that I've run out of names to use. I'll probably have to discharge some of the ones from when I was just starting that I don't use anymore.
I recently started an engineering KDF toon (they do seem to be a bit of fun), but can't quite fit him into this theme. He's a Liberated Borg Klingon named Thirty of Twenty-six.
Though his name was auto-generated, it gave me the notion of following a theme of simply being an out-of-place kind of guy. At the moment, he's only got one ship:

As a native South Carolinian, I definitely approve of one of your Vulcan's ships.
Hmm, well, if you're going for an American Civil War blue/gray theme, your Southern side should note that there were actually 13 stars on the Confederate flag. The Confederacy believed that two of the sharply divided states, Kentucky and Missouri, had enough Confederates in them to be counted on the flag. Unfortunately, that means your ship Missouri might need to change sides. But at least you'll have Kentucky.
There's also the matter of the states and territories in the American West that were part of the conflict. That's an often overlooked area of the War.
And if you're really hard up for Confederate names, there's always Brazil. Yes, Brazil. Home to the Confederados and their descendants, a band of Confederates that chose to leave the states rather than rejoin the Union.

Yeah--I was sticking to the eleven that had actually joined the Confederacy. The ship that's the South Carolina was my first ship (Reliant Class?) so I might discharge it to reuse South Carolina when I get my Vesta ship. More fitting anyhow--South Carolinans were the hotheads of the Civil War--not to mention the starting point with Fort Sumter.
