I think this is the third thread of this title due to all the forum changes and Cryptic forcing us to use PWE accounts.
So here is the well-known boilerplate:
You find all these endless build threads too complicated? You are overwhelmed by contradictory advice from other players? You don't want to have to consider tons of different aspects? You simply want a build that works?
Here is the solution:
The Hilbert Guide - A cookie cutter approach to PVP
One escort build, one cruiser build. Which ship to fly, which gear to get, which BO abilities to use, how to spec your captain and how to setup your keybinds. No "you could do A, but not unless you also want B - otherwise it would be better to go with a mix of C and D". Just a simple "build this and fly it".
As a bonus there is a PvEscort build that will get your character - no matter whether Sci, Eng or Tac - through the STFs and other PVE content as fast as possible.
(A science ship build might come at a later point - or not at all.)
After almost a year of no changes, I have started updating some of the builds. For now, only the escort and pvescort builds have been updated.
An updated cruiser might follow, and possibly even a sci ship build.
I'm open to suggestions and comments regarding the two new escort setups.
[I know that the new tactical consoles should probably be included, but I don't have access to them yet, so this has to wait a little longer.]

I know time is a limiter as it is a personal website, etc, but do your best
Any word on a link to the leaderboard being on the mainpage and perhaps wider scale release of the input option?

Since I still haven't figured out an easy option to let people claim their API keys and avoid abuse by claiming keys for other players' handles, the current system remains active: send me a pm / in-game mail and I'll provide a key.
What does GW1 acomplish? With FAW one doesn't need to cluster the enemies like one does with CSV. (After testing different builds in Infected, I decided that FAW was easier and had nearly the same damage output as a DHC/RomTorp build.) Is (unspec'ed) GW really that good? What am I missing?
[Note: I view the PVEscort as a means to an end, i.e. a tool for getting Omega marks and such. It's currently not intended as a ship that one can use to beat NWS. That's why I refrained from making an Elite version with expensive / chance-based items/doffs.]
Even if you are using FAW over CSV, a GW 1, even completely unspecced is still gonna be 'good enough' to hold a large majority of PvE enemies. Plus while they are being held, that means more damage to them, and as you start to kill them through whatever means you have, they are gonna also start blowing up on top of each other as well, dealing even more damage and possibly chain-reacting their deaths.
So the faster they die, faster you can move on.
I would say you don't NEED GW, but it is nice and can make killing groups a much cleaner affair since they are all nice and held in one spot.
And do give the Gravimetric torp a fair shot, especially if you choose to use the 2 and maybe even 3 piece bonuses of that set.
I dont ever underestimate it, and it has become a mainstay on at least my fleet dhelan fedside. I keep it as an option on my FAE.
This is of course on top of its PvP utility >=]

Was talking to Pheo about this issue last night. He had a pretty good suggestion. Simply invalidate any key that attempts to report matches in which the @handle registered to it was not present. It might not prevent people from trying, but they wouldn't get very far. If the person who did own the @handle then wanted a key, they would get a message saying that they would need to contact the WebMaster and use in-game mail to verify their ownership at that point. It would greatly reduce your involvement in handing out keys, limiting it to only resetting keys that were fraudulently claimed.
If you do update your cruiser guide, consider adding a section on Aux2Batt. You can use my cruiser as a template - it's a known effective build (just ask around) and encompasses all of the classical Aux2Batt elements.

You could also cover things like the mini parse window and the end combat timer, as well as the option to not have all the older data cram together every time you start a new encounter.
The site served me well back in the day, but that was...back in the day.
(not tryin to be a jerk, just hoping for the site to be updated in a few other areas.)

i learned quite a lot about killing npcs fast, with all the time ive spent in the space zone, killing so many voth. the fastest way to kill a cluster of npcs that ive found is to first GW them, then hit them with grav torps, that can spawn several rifts that actually do some pretty ok damage, all hitting at once. GW tends to last long enough to also get a CSV or FAW done with, and the damage from NPC core breaches on top of all that can get you 5 dead cruiser npcs in about 5 to 15 seconds if pulled off right. the full dyson item set, console torp and proton weapon, builds some wonderful crit. 2 part is a plain 3% chance buff, and 3 part is a 10% severity buff, and a 10% chance buff to all photon damage weapons.
with the 8 weapons, COM and LT tac, and a LTC sci, ive found the breen chel to be the best npc killer, and with it i tend to use APB3, its just a core breach domino effect with that and GW holding a group. i also find that CSV seems to more evenly and more quickly deal damage to a group of npcs in tight quarters, then FAW does. this i found when dabbling in NWS. the 5 extra seconds of FAW down time proboly were a big part of that too though
Opinions?
Couldn't you do a MAC/IP type auth and simply have the client ignore requests if the registered user isn't in the log file?
I guess I'm not sure how you are sending the data but I would assume regardless of source you could read the remote MAC/IP. If the end-user changes computers or IP just have them re-register for a new encrypted key.
Happy to help if I can. If I'm not in game have Naz send me a message on steam.

you dont have to go directly to MVAM, that costs real money, the patrol doesn't. the normal advanced has a ENS sci, and due to needing damage control doffs on it a bit more then the patrol does, for EPtE and EPtS, its a more advanced build by default. PSW is proboly the least useful skill it could have had at LTC sci anyway. i'd suggest to them 2 copies of CRF too, not having a CSV on there as well.
this guide should mention the mirror ships too, a cheap way for silver players to get actual tier 5 ships, because they dont get free tokens. id do cookie cutter builds for all the ships that are available mirror, that would be most helpful to those that need this guide
thumps up!
no surprise. we talked last night briefly about some options *grin*
Fleet Patrol Escort IS way deadlier in PvP than the MVAM imo opinion. It is a very meat and potatoes escort.
I was shocked to find a FAWscort as the recommended PVE build. A FAWscort, I thought? Mayhaps Hilbert has been imbibing too much Christmas cheer?
So I said what the hell, I have an Eng toon I rarely use that flies around in a mirror escort. I ran Sphere of Influence 5 times, collected the beam arrays, then bought the tac consoles for AP and ran a few missions to collect the other misc. bits of gear.
It works. It works rather well.
Once I had collected the gear I went to fit it on .... I discovered I was running the whole time without a single tac console.
I put the tac consoles on and ran a loot farming mission and smiled.
So yeah, the PVE Beamscort works, and works well. I am recommending this to fleet newbies who want to try an escort but are scared of the 45 degree arc of the P-Dis DHCs.
True story.
Thanks, Hilbert!
But here's my frequency, so hail me maybe?
I fly a fleet somraw with BO3. I can parse 12-13k dps with it, all single target so I think it is doable. Although, for STFs and such PvE, CSVs instead with CRF is to be recommended. A breen chel grett is more useful, but then it is not really a pure escort.
Also, might I suggest APD instead of APB in your build? APD is basically ABP with added self buff, the only difference being APB has a lower cd. So if you are only using one attack pattern or attack patterns without doffs, APB might be better option in PvE, but since you have 2 AP doffs recommended, APO and APD has the same uptime as APO and APB.
Also, at least for PvP, I think epte is to be recommended. Either chain epts and epte or chain eptw and epte. I find not having epte makes an escort too sluggish to be used very effectively.
Elite Defense Stovokor
I know that some players prefer APD, but APD is not a reliable way to get the debuff on your target. Targets under high pressure sometimes stop shooting entirely in order to focus on selfhealing, or they switch targets and don't shoot you at all. One can improve the situation slightly by manually applying APD to specific targets, but that runs counter to the spirit of a spacebar based guide and it's not that reliable either.
I busy doing my next Boot Camp Companion Guide and wanted to ask if you would mind if I do a segment on setting up keybinds and seeing as I learnt from your site, I just wanted to check-in with you to make sure you didn't think I was stealing something!
if i were you, id hook the boot campers up with this tool, its a GUI that couldn't make creating any bind you can imagine easier. the client even has links to instructional vids
http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showpost.php?p=5511331&postcount=22
dontdrunk is right though, there are handy tools out there that make creating keybinds very easy and it's probably simpler to point folks to these tools than explaining the intricacies of $$ and + vs ++.
Thanks Hilbert and Drunk. Appreciate it.
I'm just doing a bit on the basics of setting up the options screen, etc for the students.
Some constructive feedback though; I would change the wording in the introduction to your guide where it says "learn not to be a liability to your team" to "enhance your individual performance to become a more powerful asset to your team".
Positive wording is always the way to go to make any guide more attractive.
"Thunder, you've never done this before so you have some simple goals here
1) Survive to the end no matter what you have to do to make this happen.
2) That great idea you're having? Don't do it. It will just get you killed and this hurts the team.
3) Once you can consistently accomplish Nos. 1 & 2 regularly, then we'll see about you shooting something down."
