Well, The Devs have been answering questions and addressing Player concerns regarding Season 8 in this threat.

Of course, you and your massive wallet would have to cope with sharing the threat with the low paying, unintertesting players and those oh so simple minded lapdogs who lack your astonishing insight into how this game should really be. :)

If you can bear that, it's your best chance for getting the answers you seek as the devs usually lack time to monitor the whole rest of the forum.

Thanks for that. I'll do it.

As I said earlier, I can afford to spend money on this, or any other game.
I earn about $215k / year, and my partner earns about the same. We're comfortable. Thank you very much for your concern.

The point is that the Exec producer and dev team are not listening to their customer base. The gamers who contribute significant revenue to this game would like them to start listening. Listening, and delivering. The only way we can currently "make" Cryptic listen, is through the withholding of revenue from Cryptic.

The choice and ultimate future of STO lies with the Exec Producer and his devs. We've been asking for certain content for years. It will either be developed and delivered, or it wont. The current direction that I see the game headed in indicates that the gamer requests will continue to be ignored, and the devs will develop the game in whatever direction they want to.

That's their right. But it's our right to spend our money elsewhere.

And as I said before, Cryptic is listening to their customer base, but each Customer wants something different. If all of us wanted a decent exploration system, then Cryptic would take the hint and focus on a decent exploration system. However, everyone wants something different. Some people want PvP while others would not care if it vanished. Some people want a Klingon revamp, but others never play on the red side.

Cryptic will make the game they want and what they think we want not what we want since there is no possible way. We are simply playing Cryptic's version of what Star Trek Online should be not our own.

    No, you don't.

Really? I just made a judgement about you based on your post. I made a judgement of the OP as well. Judgements are judgements, OP spend loads of money... thinks what ever he believes he wants is what everyone wants... Thinks he knows what Star Trek is.... Thinks game is not Star Trek cause there are dinosaurs... yet the Gorn have an alligator head... really? Tasha Yar was swallowed by blob.... must I go on?

Anything can be Trek, what makes Trek is the ships, the technology, and the cultures of the factions... not whatever stupid monster you are going against... What the hell was that thing Kirk was running from in JJ trek numero uno?!?!?! Was that not trek?

I love this update... I think it's great. I'd rather have a rep than another 10 levels and the requirement to refresh my ship and gear to a new level cap... And you know what, Battlefield 3/4 players have been clamoring for a Dino Mode for years.... bring it on Cryptic. If they really don't listen... why is Red Forman coming to call us all dumb**es? We voted for that...

I guess I'm one of the few people that actually likes the KDF uniforms. I think they look a helluva lot better than the butt ugly onesie footie pajamas the feds are forced to wear unless someone has bought the Merc uniform.
Quite true. Despite having fewer options, KDF has more varied options than UFP.
Funny how you want less fluff yet the very first thing you gripe about are hairstyles and uniforms. Both of which are the epitome of fluff.

Don't see them wasting time and resources revamping PvP when so few actually use it. And that's a shame cuz the PvPers deserve something that works.
Well, I believe the fundamental flaw with PvP is the same flaw you see in pretty much every other game. Enemies play by different rules than players. It's not possible to write an AI for an MMO that's complex enough to be a challenging opponent.
Yeah I hate ground missions myself.
I don't. I'm a Dahar Master. Challenge me to ground combat at your peril! :D

Exactly. As long as a person is not in a position of authority, then they can make whatever judgment they want since it is merely their opinion towards another person. If a person believes that someone spent too much on the game, then it is their opinion and they are entitled to whatever opinion they want. Just like it is the OP's opinion that they can spend whatever amount they want on the game as long as it doesn't cut into their essential needs like food, shelter, and taking care of their kids. Obviously there are far better uses for the money, but people need simple vices to make life fun and playing a video game is far more harmless than hookers and beer.

Although the direction of Season 8 might not be what you're looking for, I guess the real question is if you'd actually want to play a game that went in the artistic direction of the highest bidder, instead of the creators'.

If you stopped that, they would listen. The more you pay them, the more votes of support you give. Think about it logically for a moment. If you were profiting nearly a million per day on a game while providing zero customer service and not listening to your clients, would you change? The correct answer is: HELL NO. The fact is, until everyone in STO gets smart and stops the ridiculous spending on virtual items that have no value whatsoever, PWE will not listen and will continue to carry on with business as usual. However, when the pocketbooks begin to hurt, you best bet they will hire professionals to come in and tell them where they went wrong, and it is at that point they will begin to listen -- I know how this works, I'm a small business owner myself.
Said NO to Arc. Gets punished by not being given a free outfit, free lobi, and free shuttle. Now forced to use Arc's site when trying to get to STO site. Still not rewards for beta testing the Arc website by force. Bravo Cryptic.

    Are you insane?

During the two years that I have been here, the amount I spent on "Star Trek: Online" hovers around $280.

$200 should have been all you needed.

Was that all spent on building a fleetbase?

I call that a serious game addiction. After seeing how much you have spent, I am now worried about signing into the game. I do not want to become lost within the void.

    Have you considered therapy?

So, you spent 1400 bucks in august alone on a free to play browsergame? (I know it's technically not a browsergame, but seriously - where's the difference in terms of game mechanics?)

I hope you're feeling mildly stupid now :D Or realise that you have a serious gambling problem and need help. Oh, but if that what you were going for I'll statisfy you: Oooh you make so much money, you are better than me :o

STO is at the stage it is at because their are far too many people throwing money at it.

The usual noise in the forums for example follow this basic pattern. Typical front page is something like this:

    - X is broken, not impressed!
    - Y needs to be nerfed, ruining game!!!
    - Z fleet project is useless! Are you serious Craptic!!!???

Then when the new shiny is released:

    - OMG this ship is AWESOME!!!!!
    - Thanks devs!
    - Cryptic are the best!!!11

Truth is players don't have a clue what they want, and Cryptic is in the fortunate position to basically do what they want and let the nostalgia for Star Trek do the selling for them. And it works, the number of times I see players buy junk they don't even need to 'support the game'.

This is not directed at the OP as such, its their money and they can spend it how they choose, but I wish gamers in general would wise up and be more careful with their spending - and not give in to the 'ooo shiny' impulse so easily, because ultimately they will grow accustomed to the practice, and be willing to accept less and less for their money.

But they don't. Which is why the gaming industry can get away with releasing broken 'final' products and promises to patch them later, games that last all of a few hours but release episodes or DLC at additional cost, games with no innovation or interesting new mechanics or steaming piles of TRIBBLE plastered in popular IP artwork that fans snap up without any motivation at all.

    It annoys me.

ffs. youre not a stockholder just by buying zen

On a personal note, I dont spend quite as much as OP but i do sink about 20-50 bucks a week in. I didnt much care for the snark about a "gambling addiction" in a previous post. I am a late comer to the game and wanted to get myself up to par so I can PvP and so forth. It cost quite a bit of money actually to get the lobi and cstore TRIBBLE (if I hadnt dropped the dime id be grinding dilithium to zen for about the next 2 years just to get everything I needed)

I feel the need to clarify my earlier statement. Of course everyone can spent their money the way they want, I don't need libertarian lections on that. But I can voice my opinion as well, as long as no moderator decides that it's against the TOS.

Anyway, I really don't want to offend people and it wasn't an insult but a honest statement. What I don't get, at all, is that a few years ago we paid 40-50 bucks for a videogame. We played that, we were upset if it didn't work and the developers fixed it for free and we all had a good time. Today people invest so much money in faulty games, thousands of dolars for free to play browsergames that don't work half the time - I really just don't get that. So I try to rationalize it and those attempts are that at least some poeple should carefully check what they are doing. Because... wow. Dude, seriously?.

I don't really get why you guys feel the need to judge this guy .
A few monhs back someone claimed that he was the first "one man fleet" to reach T5 .
All he got was a few congratulatory posts .
Nobody gave a thought to how he did it ... -- meaning that he prolly forked out as badly or even worse then the OP .
So why the double standard ?

Cryptic pretty much admitted that they are not going to finish the story lines "because we want to add to them later on" -- which it a flimsy excuse (that has no basis in creative literature) , but it does give you the following emotional ride :

Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .
Exited and then disappointed ... .

Some players are just too busy yelling "WHOO-HOO" to notice this .

I just have to keep telling myself "Cryptic's not Star Trek".

    No it's not .
At times they almost were tho ... , but me thinks they gave up when easy street came along .
(well easy for everybody but their art team , those guys still work hard)

Now, we're getting more stuff that we didn't ask for, and still not getting the things we have asked for - in some cases, begged after for years like Klingon faction modernization.

Evidently I'm not the kind of gamer the current Exec producer wants to keep around.
Below I've listed some of my recent purchases in support of this game. Am I the kind of gamer you really want to alienate? Check my account's Zen purchases. This is only a fraction.

Honestly? You're boring. Your little public tantrum is boring. You are just exactly like the hundreds of others who come to these forums and when you cannot have a blue starship instead of a red one, you feel like it is your right to complain to all who are in range. By publicly throwing a hissy fit. I am hereby exercising my right to call you boring.

So hurry up and leave already. I am quite sure we'll all get on just fine after you're gone. I am equally sure no one will miss you. The only thing you've really accomplished here is to publicly display what a hugely overwrought Drama Diva you are. Need a couple of Midols? I've got some spares. Might wanna think about getting this condition of yours checked out, too. Gonna make it hard to find a Prom date

Just like all the rest of us, you ain't as important as Mommy told you you was.

And here's a thought for all of you...

I'd bet, and many would agree, that Trek is a little less about the form of the alien(s) and a lot more about the motivations behind the situation(s)...

Just snaring some examples from ToS:

There was an episode that portrayed the "proxy war" between the then-USSR-representative and the then-US-representative, "couched" in a philosophical debate about the prime directive.

How about the handful of episodes that involved being forced to fight for the amusement of some other party? And the "harm" done so to humanity by the forcers - even though they "learned" something about the power(s) of "goodness"

One of the "strongest" combat episodes was solved by a bluff.

A handful of "no man left behind" situations.

Evolution of humanity past greed and into "the search for enlightenment".

Granted, a lot of this is very hard to put into a "more dakka" combat-game. Well, competent writers can come close, but still... And of course, almost by definition, combat is what drives these games. I saw a mention of bridge commander. Isn't that a combat game where instead of seeing out the viewscreen (a-la the Academy games) or seeing the whole starship (SFC, Armada, Legacy, our space combat) the primary PoV was from the captain's chair? And combat was a little less "press the fire button to see pretty pew-pew" and more "press the button to order joe-bob to make the pretty pew-pew?"

On that note, am I keen on "dinosaurs with head-laser-bearing-armor"? Not really. Can an interesting story be written about why the Alpha Quadrant has to go fight these "critters of the week"? Hopefully. And that will be the prime determinant of how much I enjoy S8 - yeah.

New Romulus wasn't bad. Topped off by LoR. There's a bit of "story" there. There's a bit of "exploration" (the accolades for poking all over the place). There's motivations. Do I agree with all of it? No. Was it interesting though - yeah.

S6? S7? Blast all of the targets in order to get fleet marks? Stop the evil invading empire that has no motivation but being blasted? Sorry, lots of "meh" there... Do a lot of people enjoy it? Yeah. Heck, on this note, aren't STFs nothing more than "blast all the targets" because the pre-mission briefing talks about saving the disabled Kang or attempt to find out what happend to Starbase 82? But what makes them at least semi-interesting is just that - the original goal has a little more behind it than "shoot at random targets for random rewards"...

Really. What made Balance of Terror so interesting as to be a fan-favorite after all these years, or WoK? Was it the fact that there was pew-pew? Or was it the motivations and development of the characters (on both sides, mind you) that occurred during the pew-pew?

Would STO benefit from this? Yeah. Would STO benefit from being "fixed"? Yeah. Still, it seems that all the Devs are focused on is "look at the cool aliens we've built" and "buy the newest pew-pew system". No repairs to make a polished game. 2 seasons of "we don't need motivation, we need targets". S8 is another sign of possibly getting back on track - but is it gonna wind up being "lets fight the new targets to feed a base-holding and you'll enjoy it", or is there going to be motivation and reason behind it?
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

A huge beatuful setting wasted in nothing. Press F and scan water, radiation, insects, plants missions that gave you 5 marks. Only fools spent their time there, hard enough was getting romulan marks with better rewarding missions outside NR.

Nukara was much better (and I say 'was' cause now has been ruined putting their bosses as queued missions).

Only good thing about New Romulus if you like episodes and mission content (I personally don't), is their reputation tier missions, but those are instances separated from the adventure zone, more like episodes.
