Jakal, I'm a bit afraid that tampering with our computers will only serve to amplify the problem when the developers finally decide to fix the problem on their end. I mean, how can it be a problem on our end if the patch worked fine 2 days ago, just before the LoR launch?
do you see a fix listed for this??? i don't, and haven't seen one since it started happening..this is just a result of not being prepared. like i said earlier allods just released an expansion that only took me 20-40 minutes to install and patch and i was ingame enjoying new content just like that. im just sayin seeing that and this is just mind boggling
@chaytonnafeel: You need to look at the logs under "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online" (specifically Errors.log) to see what file it couldn't read/expand. I'd simply try deleting the file and see if the patcher won't force a download of an uncorrupted version.
@jakal122481: By "reload errors.log" I mean I physically opened "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\ERRORS.log" in notepad, went to the end, noted the file the patcher choked on and deleted it before the patcher tried again. There's a 10 second period in which it waits and tries to update the file again. Simply deleting the files in advance will save some time as any that don't exist will be reacquired.
To further test this fix, I verified the local files in steam, which redownloaded all the updated files and returned me to the "A file was locked" error when trying the steam launcher. I bulk deleted the files I listed, redownloaded the manual patch and launched it. Still worked _for me_. Will it work for everyone? Not sure but at this stage at least I'm trying. Likewise, I'm not deleting anything that the patcher isn't already trying to overwrite.
Note: This is only a fix for the "Error 36"/"A file was locked" error
If you want the safe approach:
#1. Grab the manual patcher
#2. Attempt to patch by launching "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\star trek online\Star Trek Online.exe"
#3. When the patcher gives you the "Error 36", open "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\ERRORS.log" with notepad.
#4. Go to the end of the log and delete the file that caused the error 36 before the patcher reattempts to update (10 seconds).
#4.1. If you don't, it'll simply throw the same error line
#5. Close notepad
#6. Repeat steps 3-5 as necessary until you can log in.
I haven't run afoul of any other patch issues since then. I have a pretty stable internet connection and haven't run afoul of any server queues either but I've only been on the twice since last night testing this fix...and running a few borg missions .
@newbie32: Thanks for the quick answer. Unfortunately in the file just stands the following:
130125 08:30:01 31 [1]: xferrer resetting after apparent hang.
So no clue what that means, i already searched for a file with that name, with no luck.
But you mentioned an manual patcher got an URL for that?

(Not crazy about the new interface but whatever)
doesnt work for me either when i delete the file thats causing the error it just replaces it and goes back to do what it did
@chaytonnafeel: the manual patcher is on my first post and a few replies. As to where to apply, you'll have to search for the ?Star Trek Online.exe? and overwrite that to give it a try.
As to being stuck at ?patching?, mine looked stuck for some 20 minutes and then it worked fine. If in doubt, try the manual patcher and give it a shot since it seems to be the most effective tool at the moment for getting people in.
Ok tried the manual Patcher, did not work either. I now deinstalled the game and reinstalled, now it works again. Just need to hope during the 6,9gb download of the patching progress my pc doesnt freeze up again.
Would be nice if Online Games would update their game installer from time to time, so you don't have to reinstall always all the patches since release .
Anyways good thing i have a great internet connection, 2 minutes and already 18% down.
getting really sick of this freaking game. used to be a game i liked. now its just TRIBBLE. how can there be this much problems when they tested it? plz dont tell my cryptic is hiring broader jumpers to save a few bucks cuz right that thats what it seems like.
also i dont have steam and sto is under users not program files i also use windows 7.
welp i don't know what they did but now im back to not being able to log in because the small while box counts down to some TRIBBLE then gives me a error of cant write to a file because its locked.
im really sick of this TRIBBLE ,im sick of this fail company called craptic and they need to just shut down these servers till they can really get things worked out. or hire a hole new dev team because this is a poor excuse of a game
Hello everyone, I am recently back to the game after having installed it about a year ago and playing it a few times If my memory serves me correctly that install was effortless and with no issues. Yesterday I decided to reinstall it, as I was on a Star Trek kick and that's when the hell began....
I went to the website and relogged into my account and hit the download page. It updated something but it froze with this little box saying (trying to connect update something or other). So I clicked on the x and the patch part came up and it started patching (6932MB some random number) it had gotten to about 20% and just restarted to zero with no error message. Then had like a different random number (5465) whatever, and got to about 76% and failed. So I restarted the whole process and it turns out that the little box that comes up to update? try 1 or something? was related to being affected by my virus scanner. I needed to open a path through my virus scanner to allow it to update, which I did, and then the patch was at yet another random number 11GB!?!?!
Sheesh, what is with all the random numbers and which one is correct... turns out this time I checked in c:\program files(x86)\ now there is a cryptic studios folder which there was not one before. My question is, it has failed a few times during the patch update and it seems to be starting off where it left off each time. This install is total pain and not sure what it is doing and if it is even going to work... I really wanted to play the damn game. Is this normal, has it happened to anyone else, I would appreciate some feedback and input to rectify this situation.
well after a few hours of trying different thing i finally downloaded the installer from the link newbie32 provided and deleted all the files again and it seemed to work without steam but it doesn't work through steam anymore
I finally managed to patch last night, and have logged in and out several times. The only challenges I've experienced so far were
* had to reset my resolution
* had to play around with other video settings till I got a satisfactory mix of aesthetics and performance; still have a bit of delay/lag/FPS (not entirely sure which of these may be the issue, possibly some combination of the three, possibly all three), but it's tolerable for now
* Crystalline Catastrophe (Elite) kept kicking me out 5 seconds after I got in (but I'm not the only one experiencing this issue); filed ticket on this.
Apart from these things, everything seems to be functioning within acceptable parameters.
Good job, Devs and GMs and PMs and so on.
Now, if we can have a chat about the limited number of costume options for Romulans and KDF, and the limited number of costume colors available to KDF ...
I'm experiencing this issue as well. Deleting the file causing the error does not solve the problem; the launcher simply replaces it and goes back into the error-patch loop.

yeah, i'm not using steam and it says that some file is locked because of error 36 or something like that.
That's the problem I have. It downloaded the patch the this morning and then it just stops when I get the screen with Cryptic on it. Eventually, the error reporter pops up, but I can't do much with it. I hope this issue gets solved.
Hi there!
I've been experiencing the same problem and went on trying a few options. It's a really irritating error and I think that a few people are still having problems with it after patch updates [since it's my second time experiencing it after new patches].
Here's a possible solution for:
-PC with Windows 7.
1. You are most likely looking at the error like " WHYY-" right now [I know I did]. Close it. It's better for your health and this way we can go on with step 2.
2. Right click on the desktop icon and choose 'properties'.
3. You'll most likely see a page pop up now. Choose the tab 'Compatibility'.
4. So there should be a checkbox in the lower part of the tab that says:
'Always run as admin'
Check the box and click apply.
Well now you got the launcher set to run as admin immediately, but we still got the patch problem blocking our way. Let's fix that now so you can enjoy the game again.
5. Now click on the launcher. A page will appear asking you to give permission to apply the software to the computer... or something like that [I'm sorry, English isn't my native language. Please forgive me for any typos.] Just click yes, it's completely normal.
6. The launcher loaded and you need to login. Before you do though, go to 'options' and check the box saying 'Force verify'. Then click okay.
5. Log in. Now you are running the program as an admin and have clicked 'Force verify' the game should start patching again. Let it patch completely.
You should be able to go into the game now. I hope it works and have fun gaming

I've tried to be patient and nice but honestly, how come you can't fix this?
