Seems I will not see it till it hits Holodeck. Tribble keeps saying Shard locked and kicking me out.

Well as I have said before - I believe the KDF gets nothing till it's on Holodeck.

So who knows for sure what the final results will be. I will not hold out much hope of any significant updates/changes between now and the May launch.

The test servers were up earlier and yesterday after a huge patch - adding warp cores and traits and tons of stuff. But there were significant bugs like players beaming down as their ships - some nice pics of ships running around.

Probably be back up later today.

So as we learn more - are Klingon/Gorn/orion - etc etc - going to become an endangered races in the KDF?

I know people have put so much time into their KDF toons they won't just give them up - but looks like Romulans may be taking over Qo,nos in the end.

    Not likely, bub.

Remember- It's official now that Romulan Republic characters will NOT get access to their allies' tier 5 and beyond ships. And boy does the KDF have some good stuff at tier 5.

If Romulans are allowed to Join the KDF and have access to Romulan ships and KDF ships and gear - what possible reason would any new player roll a Klingon toon?

I mean you can roll a Rommie and come into a KDF fleet and have access to all KDF ships and equipment and you get all the Romulan shinnies to?

All the old KDF players are stuck with just the KDF gear as I see it now.

So unless I am wrong - other than Klingon fandom - what possible reason is there to start/keep a Klingon toon when you can - or a new player can get access to all your stuff+their new stuff?

So those fleets that built up bases - you get to build ships and gear for the Romulans - that you wont have access to as a Klingon!!

I hope I am wrong - but if this is true - the Klingon race is going to almost disappear in STO.

To be honest, just judging from the descriptions given in the Dev Blogs, why would ANYONE (Fed or Klink) roll anything BUT a Romulan as their next alternate class? The whole "Singularity Abilities" gimmick just seems too good.

They get some type of "power-up" charge provided by the whole gimmicky singularity thing that they can then use on one of a handful of special abilities? Can we say "broken"? Especially if there is no form of "balancing" to off-set this? Weaker hull and shields? I hope those that got into Beta can shed some light on this whole "singularity abilities" thing..

The ships have a 40 powerbase instead of a 50 powerbase..

Will it completely offset the singularity stuff? Probably not... especially considering they get battle-cloaks across the board while still retaining similar shields/hull to Klingon vessles.

But it is what it is. It doesn't really bother me at this point since they have such limited options. They'll very likely be very strong PvP ships and average in PvE. Of course, we haven't seen the fleet ships yet... so who knows. The Mogai and T'varo could get pretty out of hand if either of them gets a 5th tac console.

there is a weakness; romulan ships get 160 power to split among their systems instead of the 200 fed/kdf ships get

yeah, not much of one, but the stuff is also in a beta state, and therefore subject to change

    I got invited to beta.

So far the abilities are interesting, the two I've tried.

Plasma shockwave: Pretty much as it sounds. It doesn't disable or knockback (or if it does, it doesn't do much), but it does do some damage and put a guaranteed plasma burn on everything it hits.

Quantum Absorption: Acts as a mix of pseudo-Miracle Worker, TSS, and Jevonite Hardpoints consumable. Gives you a shield heal, an extra chunk of hull for awhile, a shield HoT, and a hull heal (I think).

Both, and presumably others will, do get stronger as you gain more charges in your Singularity, up to 5. Once you use an ability, you lose all charges and cannot gain anymore for 60 seconds.

However, the problem I feel doesn't lie with if these abilities are balanced as-is. I am thinking more about...are they balanced when people start to min-max them? For example...

Will that plasma shockwave get buffed by...plasma consoles, crit chance/severity bonuses, tac buffs, etc?

Is that Quantum Absorption going to be buffed by the Hull repair/Shield emitter skills? Will it be boosted by those consoles/deflectors that add to it?

And then there's the other skills we haven't gotten to yet on those.

Are they balanced now? Maybe. I quite like, at the moment at least, the big heal thing. I'm not used to these Romulan ships, and I can't access the resources off of my main account, so that heal has been extremely useful to save my 'green-blooded hobgoblin'-skin.

Things are bound to change, but I feel that trying to say what is balanced and what isn't balanced right now is a bit early, because we haven't seen everything yet. Singularity cores aren't just one thing. There's skills, different levels and rarities to them, new traits, maybe new sets, etc that will be affecting these.

Lots of variables left to discover before we make too many judgments.

i can tell you right now it does get buffed by plasma consoles; that was the first thing i tested when i got one; it also gets buffed by particle generators, but i don't know how much yet

don't know about tac buffs, since i rolled my tester as an engi

Has anyone done any testing of these abilities with "Emergency Power to X", yet? Weapons? Aux?? Battery???

Sorry, I'm drunk, and feeling more "fatalistic" then usual...

Speaking of "Emergency Power to X" abilities... on paper I like the change they are making, as it makes activating the ability an "emergency", not just something you hit incidentally during your standard "Alpha Spike" rotation...

Ok, thank you on that correction.

And alright, if it is boosted by plasma consoles and particle gens, I have a feeling it might be boosted by tac buffs. I made a tac as my tester, so I'll be looking at giving that a shot later.

You bring up a good point though, even if it doesn't say it is, doesn't mean it necessarily is or is not affected by them. Again, I will be checking this later.

I'll try not to forget to post.

They aren't affected by power levels. Could be mistaken though. Makes sense though, since the ability is basically coming right from your power source in the first place.

Personally, I never use those phaser magnets when running a KDF toon.

Mind you, they might become less of a moving dartboard with the new trait stuff. There's always hope.

Hardly so. It will end up just as any other hype in STO - with a short lifespan. Just like at one point every second ship was Chel Grett, just as at other point every ship was Ambassador Class or a bilion of Caitians when their species was first released, the Romulans will have their hype of popularity at the start when everyone will play one, but given a bit of time things will settle down and everyone will settle down again in his/hers own faction of preference.
Yes a chunk of KDF and probably a bigger chunk of Fed. players will remain permanently playing Romulans as their main, but it's far from anyone being extinct.

Personally I have no vast interest in Romulans, I'll make a Rommie char to go through the missions and check them out, but I can't see myself seriously playing the Roms. Now,if they were Cardassians, that'd be another story. lol :D
And I will also make a new KDF char. who will have a priviledge to be born and level in a complete KDF faction! I just haven't decided wheather to make a Klingon or Nausicaan when the time comes. :)

Because not all people are complete min.-maxers. Some of us play just for plain old fun.
For ex. if I decide my new KDF char in LoR to be a Nausicaan, I'll level him in a Vandal Destroyer followed by Scourge Destroyer and fly the Guramba at end-game. Because they are his ships, Nausicaan design. I wouldn't mind them not being able to cloak because it will feel right and immersive to me to be a Nausicaan in a Nausicaan ship. :)

Also, from what I've heard the Romulan ships will have a -10 to all systems power levels. And I haven't been on the Tribble server, so someone may correct me about this or add more info, but I heard that the Matter-Antimatter Warp Cores that the Federation and the Empire would be using will provide an increase of power to 2 miscellaneous sybsystems.
If this is true, a boost to weapons/auxiliary on my Fed. cruisers or a boost to shields/auxiliary on my KDF starships would be worth pure gold to me. Much more than the Romulan gimmick of the singularity core.

Nah, we will always be here.

Many will play Romulan when its released because its new and really different in function, so it will seem like RSE is all that exists when in reality its just the excitement pf the "new". Once the new fades away a bit in excitement levels some will stay with the RSE because thwy found something they enjoy in it but most will return to thier fave fandom as normal.

Dont let the "new" make you fear for the KDF future.

What previous posters have said, plus ships from Subcommander onward have access to Warp Shadows, an ability which randomly teleports you, spawns up to 5 immobile, very tough warp shadows lasting for 15 seconds, and seems to attract a lot of attention from hostile NPCs. Useless in PvP, though, unless you use JTS and are fighting against somebody incapable of comprehending what's going on.

The only way the KDF will die is when STO closed it's door and all factions die. I haven't seen a more loyal bunch of gamers in a long time, the KDF players have stuck with the faction even when the Federation has been getting a new ship or costume every other week. Goes to show that Cryptic can try and forget about the KDF, but we are here to stay and we are proud of who and what we are.

Stahl is all over the board - 18% 16% 12%

So what will it be after the Romulan invasion - er - alliance?

    10%

Personally I think it will reinforce the future of the KDF.

Since we know that romulans won't get access to T5 alliance ships, this puts the fed at a slight disadvantage to the kdf as the majority of fed cstore ships are at T5, where as the majority of KDF cstore ships are sub T5.

The kdf is also the only other faction with cloaking, which means a romulan characters innate trait won't be completely wasted if you choose to fly a kdf vesssel for a while.

Since the majority of kdf vessels are sub T5 that also means the majority of their console abilitys are universal.

The kdf also has the only console ability I actualy use on a regular basis so I know I will be going that route. Most of the fed stuff isn't that awesome or is locked to a ship type. And the stuff that is awesome is available off the exchange.

All this means is that a romulan character stands to benifit more from the KDF and that if they were to buy ships for just the consoles the kdf has more of the cheeper useful options, so more slaed on kdf stuff = more incentive to create kdf stuff.

I look at it this way, the KDF will gain more population through Romulans joining and not loose as many players as the Federation will.

Plus remember a lot of players don't play the KDF due to the Red UI and now with the choice to choose didn't colours may also help the KDF population.

Plus there is only one pre-T5 Federation ship that has a half decent console. I can think of several KDF ships that have good consoles I use on a regular basis.

It'll be really interesting to see where the number lay after the excitement of a new faction wears off.

There are a lot of people that have been saying they've been waiting 3 years to finally get to play as a Romulan, and that hardcore group most likely won't go KDF. Remember Romulans are deceitful honourless dogs and Klingons are Barbaric Neanderthals. If people choose to go with the long established history between Romulans and Klingons over the STO storyline, then people will go Fed.

I've seen people in this thread talking about people should go KDF alliance because of the KDF consoles and that FED consoles are bound to certain ships. Actually very few of the lower tier ship consoles are actually bound to a ship type so that logic doesn't really apply.

In the end the only things that will really be a factor for player population are if Cryptic creates content for all three factions equally and a players personal interest.

Thats the point, since you will only have access to lower tier ships then kdf is your best bet since they have more low tiered ships than the feds. I did a breakdown a while ago. I may even update it.

Yeah, but if you're going to play a Romulan then why would you want a KDF or FED ship to begin with, and as far as special ability consoles how much of your list gets zeroed out because they are cloaks/cloak modifying, now available cross faction or the singularity core abilities negate needing them?

Well its more about available choices for me. The kdf simply has more options for the levels where I could actualy use one of their ships.

And since all the cstore ships after ra have bound consoles the kdf also hase more available console options for me should I choose to buy a ship.

Plus, Plasmonic leech, Only always on console available, also the only one I fine I use on a regular basis. And I think one of the coming rom ships has an always on shield stealing console ability.

No doubt the leech will be put in a lock-box soon enough. There was a big KDF outcry with just the rumor of that awhile back because of the buff Feds would get with Maco shield.

well that is not only null and void - but the opposite happened the KDF got the op combo of Maco shields and Plasmonic leech.

You noticed how quiet it after it happened? Alot of those "the sky is falling" posters suddenly evaporated. I think they were hoping no one noticed.

It also isn't just about the consoles. I prefer disruptor weapons. And the kdf fleets get elite disruptor weapons.

So true. they are like that family member who only show up when they need money. Or someone to travel back in time and save the universe.

You noticed how quiet it after it happened? Alot of those "the sky is falling" posters suddenly evaporated. I think they were hoping no one noticed.

It also isn't just about the consoles. I prefer disruptor weapons. And the kdf fleets get elite disruptor weapons.

Yes I remember the threads were so angry and violent about Feds getting Leech and the Maco shields that most had to be shut down.

The KDF posters were getting out the pitch forks and marching toward Cryptic.

They said it would be GAME BREAKING - Super OP - unfair advantage - on and on.

Then poof they got Adapted Maco and kept the Leech and all talk about it being OP and game breaking came to a screeching halt - dead silence -hoping no-one would notice that they now had what they were saying was unfair and OP.

Don't worry - before the next lock-box us Federomulans will be making the topic a #1 priority - especially with the reduced power levels for Romualn ships! My Klingomulan will need something from the Fed side but what do they have?

Ah yes MACO/Adapted KHG space with the Plasmonic Leech. I remember that.

    Here's my question:

How often do you see this combination? I mean that. How often do you really and truly see both those things on one ship?

In PvE...it doesn't really matter. I mean, you can run nearly anything and get through it pretty well. I had Klingons who did just fine before they had access to the MACO set, and many others did to.

But even with it, it would change little. The Borg STFs would still be the same as they are now, having a bit more power from the MACO shield would alter little. And any other max level PvE is even easier than that for the most part, again it wouldn't matter.

In PvP...which really is what is being implied here...about the time this whole thing went through, more and more people started getting access to Elite Fleet Shields, which pretty much tossed the shields of the STF sets out the window as word got around about them.

I'm not saying you won't see it in PvP at all, just that I rarely seem to notice it. Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention, but I don't really notice much anymore compared to the much worse Fleet shields.

So, maybe it is OP, maybe it isn't. To be honest, the trade should've never been given, because it only further dilutes the factions.

Now, is it really a problem though? Is it a major issue? Yes, there was indeed all that fuss over it back when season 7 was hitting, but is it as OP as people believed? My answer is that possibly not.

If it is an issue, then maybe it's worth bringing up again IF there's ever a lockbox with PM. Though, and this isn't an insult to Fed players, many will find out that Plasmonic Leech isn't the godly console it's thought to be. A highly useful and effective one, but still only a console.

Then again, we're all getting warp cores in the future, and engineers are gaining (if not very useful atm) trait of even more power, so this whole Plasmonic Leech/MACO shield thing might not even be worthwhile in the future, who knows.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
