I suspect it has more to do with player momentum fading due to the lack of significant updates(not even a new duty officer pack or ship release). Less motivation to play, less reason to buy dilithium to fuel the grinds/resource sinks.
The zen 'reserve' that generally holds prices in place has been about a third of the size it is usually at. With the recent degradation in quality of pug STFs, I can only conclude that a lot of veteran players are playing less. Conversely, or in addition to, a lot of fresh blood is stepping into the late game content and seeing all the shiny things that require zen.

we have only 40 days to go. it is not enough time for a new lockbox, but we will be seeing the "Crystalline" fleet action with a nice reward, which is to be grinded for 2 weeks to succeed. Do it with 2 toons = 1 month or more.
is there some kind of statistics of active accounts available somewhere?
Yes, pretty much all my Dil (~25k a day) goes into Zen at the moment. But now that I have reached 3.5k I'll probably slow down a bit. Should be enough for one ship and an outfit. I don't believe in 3-packs, special consoles are almost always the first thing going to the bank when I get a new ship, so there is really no need for me to get packs. If there is a TOS bundle I might consider that for the uniforms, though I'm not too interested in BoPs. I hope TOS uniforms will be available stand-alone.
Mostly I switched to EC farming now. I might have to buy a full set of expensive doffs for the new char. Also kinda still hoping to see a new lockbox BEFORE the expansion. I don't think releasing one at the same time as the expansion would be that smart, asking for people to invest in lockboxes and lot's of z-store stuff at the same time would be pretty insane.
By the way, did a rough calculation that equipping a new character with Mk XII reputation/fleet shinies costs close to 400k dilithium too.
The C store ships call to me
I currently own a Lot of C store ships (My to do list includes another 8 including a specialist shuttle)
Romulan ships will join the list
I'm hoarding up what I can. I got enough for my Defiant class at lv50 and a few other goodies. I will keep building up until then. Lowest I saw it was down around 89 but that was a good month ago. Now I see it hovering around the 99-103 mark. Sometimes on weekends it will drop slightly. So I hoard up dil until then, then do a big purchase.
I'm waiting for the Romulan expansion to see what they offer. Before I make my other C store purchases. I know I won't waste it on low level Romulan stuff. I only buy high end ships now.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350
Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
Pandaria was "paid for" by the fans who Subscribed to WoW and bought items in their Store, and yet it still costs money. The Hutt Cartel was "paid for" by the fans who Subscribed and used the Store in SWTOR, and yet it still costs money. Riders of Rohan was "paid for" by the fans who Subscribed, used Lockboxes, and used the Store in LotRO, and yet it still costs money.
*Cough* to be honest, I bought Riders of Rohan with my LTS stipend. Just like Isengard.
Hutt cartel, well, I stopped my sub when they announced it, as I can't use my stipend, and must spend money on a stupid DLC.
I read somewhere LoR will have some Cstore packs, probably ships, costumes.
Go, baby, go...400 here we come! I need cheap dilithium!

im holding back until i know it is worth the effort, it seems like the sto crew have bounced back from the dark days of 2011 and early 2012 with their messages so clear its like looking for a grain of salt under several feet of sand... 2013 seems different though and i may start putting money into the game, not the lockbox TRIBBLE, but useful things that would benefit my characters more then these irreverent side issues like doffs. this is what cryptic should of been doing the first time out, listening to the complains and fixing the issues, i mean CE was one such thing, adding the rommies, fixing various problems that have plagued the game for years.
so yeah.. at some point i may get my borg analyzer kit ready along with what little zen i can muster up from the CE event and dailies, got over a month left, plenty of time to scare up some stuff in time.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I'm going to keep my dil. No way i trade it for less than 1:100. I'm going to wait for may. There will be sooo many new dilithium sinks and so many new toys to buy.

Hmmm, that could be it. :P
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.

That can't explain it - the increased CE rewards would mean MORE dilthium on the market - or a price drop to 1:90
this is pure hoarding anticipating lots of rommie stuff

Actually, you just gave the reason for your being wrong. There's more dilithium on the market, but there's not more zen to balance it out, and the people selling zen want more dilithium to compensate for the fact that it's a bit easier to get dilithium now. :P

your right more dilthium in the market would be a reason to buy less Zen.
Still it's only 7 days worth of refinement or 500 zen worth per toon. or 4 keys worth.
I would be shocked if there were not more dilthium sinks added in the expansion.
I think the promise of a future 50k dilithium makes people buy Zen right now knowing they will recover that Dilithium before the new sinks arrive in the expansion.
Only to buy my Vesta bundle, and this Zen bonus is the perfect opportunity...
Return on investment would have to be pretty high for me to consider trading a large quantity of zen for dil.

That's entitely another thing. The Exchange is there on the premise that some people have more time than money, and vice versa.
Anyone with less money than you would say the exact opposite : the return on investment would need to be pretty high for me to trade money for zen instead of trading dilithium for zen".
EDIT : Sorry I thought you were weighing in on the argument that 1 Zen is only worth a penny. But my point is still valid.
Do you think this sale is to control the dil market? The sale on keys to reduce the price on the exchange? Nothing to do with tax time, but anyone who had been looking had seen both prices rising steadily.

I'll have to resist temptation and try to have 10k saved up for LoR though
I believe there will be TONS of romulan C-store shinnies - I am really hoping for a 3 pack.
3- pack what is the question.
I am probably not too far out to suggest that the Scimatar will come in a Lockbox. Unless it has been stated that it won't.

Must be that Crystalline Event Rewards. I forgot that most people didnt know about it until the release.

If only it cost a penny;)
100 Zen equals a Dollar...you do the math. :P
You can take any economic argument and reduce it like this to hide the true cost. 5000 Zen, the price of a ship pack, equals 50$.
Or I could say it costs only a penny each day for 13.68 years.
But it's only a penny !!
