My main two characters ship name origins:

    U.S.S. Manhattan

    A Tactical Escort Retrofit.

I named her so because I like the idea of Starfleet having secret projects like the Manhattan project of the 1940's and the Defiant class always seemed like one of those projects to me.

    U.S.S. Odyssey

    An Assault Cruiser

(I named her before the release of the Odyssey Star Cruiser) I had gone through a Greek theme of ship names and decided to keep the tradition .

    Odyssey Tactical Cruiser: U.S.S. Mriya
"Mriya" is the Russian name for the Antonov An-225 (N.A.T.O. reporting name: "Cossack"). With an impressive length of 84 metres, and wingspan of 88 metres, it is currently the world's largest aircraft.

    Registry: NX-917950-X
This was proudly chosen in honour of the the SR-71 (N.A.T.O. reporting name: "Blackbird"). To be exact, the tail number of the first prototype was 61-7950. For my ship, I changed the 6 to a 9 because Star Trek Online requires all registry numbers to begin with 9.
I completed a 2-man CSE, ISE, and KASE, Optionals included. And I soloed Winter Invasion.
My Ship Builds: USS Conqueror, HMS Victorious, HMS Concord, ISS Queen Elizabeth, Black Widow III

Basically I wanted an ambivalent name to remind the crew and officers of the ugly and controversial side of the Federation's military force. I was thinking of doing a reference to Iain Banks' ship minds, with the sardonic names like "Killing Time" or "A Frank Exchange of Views" but, the client wouldn't allow it.

Then I thought about naming the ship after controversial battles or massacres, like My Lai, Wounded Knee, Katyn Forest or Verdun.

But I finally I decided to name my ship after famous Earth political leaders in the developing world, after decolonization. I settled on Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected leader of the Republic of Congo in 1960. Belgium, the former ruler of the Congo, intervened and had him deposed and shot. He was replaced by Mobuto Sese Seko, an outrageous tyrant who ruled for 37 years. Anyway, I figured Lumumba was on the right side of history, even though he wasn't successful.

    So USS Lumumba it is.

If I upgrade to a new ship, I think I'll continue on this line. USS Allende, USS Mandela, USS Kenyetta, USS Ho Chi Minh, USS Trotsky, etc.

Each of my captains' ships have names specific for thier origins:

Adm. Malcolm Daniels' ship, the Rodger Young, is named for the WW2 Medal of Honor recipient who gave his life while advancing on a enemy machine gun nest that had ambushed his squad. Pvt. Young, although wounded, advanced on the enemies position and once within range, threw several grenades at the nest before being killed. His actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers, as well as killing several enemy combatants. For his selfless act of valor, Pvt. Rodger Wilton Young was posthumously awarded the US Military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor.

There's also a song written about him, detailing his heroic actions; "The Ballad of Rodger Young". My current ship, a Sovereign-class assault cruiser, and the sixth ship to carry to carry the name, bears a line from the song on it's dedication plaque, located on the bridge.

"...in every soldier's heart in all the Infantry
Shines the name, shines the name of Rodger Young."

My other captains' ship names are indicative of their individual origins:

Jenari D'ian, an Orion female, and cousin of the Orion Syndicate's leader, Melani D'ian, commands a Klingon ship named the Jade Princess, after her connection to Orion "royality".

D'elon, my Romulan (actually the alien species) Starfleet science officer's ships all take their names from Roman Emperors. Her first ship was the Augustus, and her current ship is named the Tiberius. I'm gonna see how far I can go in ship names with her.

My last captain is actually a homage to the great sci-fi movie Galaxy Quest. My captain's name is, of course Peter Quincey Taggart and his ship is named the Protector. I'm thinking about recruiting bridge officers and renaming and making them look like the other cast members from the movie. haha

USS Vaudeville - named for old school stage variety entertainment, mostly the comedy aspect. My first character was based completely on me, and my Boff's are all friends / family so naming the ship Vaudeville was a reference to the variety of entertaining personas. The last 3 digits of the registry represent my daughter's birthday.

Atrox carrier=NX-Graf Zeppelin. Graf Zeppelin was the first of a line of Yorktown class sized carriers that was made but never used in ww2 captured by the ussr and sunk on a anti-carrier exercise where she was bombarded by 26 1000 lb bombs and finally attained hull dmg to a torpedo sinking her.

Tholian Recluse Carrier=NX-Yorktown. Yorktown was the USN Fleet carriet in ww2 that was the staging area for some of the most important skirmishes and raids in the war(Dolittle raid anyone?)Big E was more decorated but Yorktown is still notable.

Chimera Heavy Destroyer=NX Prinz Eugen. She was the Bismarck's escort on the Bismarck's maiden voyage and assisted in the sinking of the UK BC hood

The Doolittle raid was launched off of the Hornet, not the Yorktown.

My ships are named after eagles since I am quite fond of birds.

      t1 - USS Osprey
t2 - USS Harpy (best bird ever since it eats monkeys and I hate monkeys)
t3 - USS Martial (2nd most awesome eagle)
t4 - probably USS Aquila as I think the Exploration Cruisers deserve such a cool name. Aquila is latin for a genus of eagles including the Golden eagle.
t5 - not sure what it should be. I don't really have any love for the sovereign so I might buy a expl. cruiser retrofit. Maybe call it USS Harpy II or something. Or do you have better ideas?

My ships are named as follows:
      • ISS Panem (kitbashed Mirror recon science): Both my Mirror Universe ships are named for non-Trek literary villains. This one refers to the evil government of the Hunger Games trilogy.
      • ISS Voldemort (Imperial Mirror cruiser): Named, of course, for the principal villain of the Harry Potter series. (Its registry is NCC-103181, referring to the date he killed Harry's parents.)
      • USS Borgata (Gladius escort): This is the ship I use for Tour The Galaxy and the Borg sector block dailies. It has all my Borg tech on it, so I named it the Borgata (after the Las Vegas casino/hotel) as a tongue-in-cheek reference to that fact.
      • USS Condor (Chimera destroyer): The Chimera is one ugly-TRIBBLE$ bird, so I named mine (my go-to for most STFs) after another ugly-TRIBBLE$ bird.
      • USS Kitty Hawk (Atrox carrier): Another tongue-in-cheek name (this time referring to it being a Caitian carrier, which I've custom-built for The Cure STF) ostensibly after the place in North Carolina where the Wright brothers flew the first airplane.
      • USS North Star (Polaris recon science): A throwback to my roleplaying days (years before the name was used for a 22nd-century freighter in ENT). Making it a Polaris-class was a no-brainer, as Polaris is, of course, another name for the northern star.
      • USS Pathfinder (Vesta surveillance): The name of my newest ship refers to both the "Pathfinder Project" from VOY and one of the first Mars rovers.
      • USS Pax Federatica (Science Odyssey): My flagship's name (which in turn inspired my PWE handle) is a play on Pax Britannica.

USS Atlantic, Defiant-class. First name that came when I loaded up my Sao Paulo refit with my first character upon reaching level 30, and I thought I would keep it going for the T5 Defiant retrofit. I liked the sound of it.

USS Indefatigable, Excelsior-class Lakotra retrofit. Named after a Horatio Hornblower ship. :) Was my eng's ship, replaced it with...

USS Armstrong, Sovereign-class Regent refit. I bought this ship and named it on the same day that Neil Armstrong passed away.

USS Callisto, Luna-class. Follows the Luna-class naming conventions. Was my science character's ship, until I replaced it with...

USS Endeavour, Intrepid-class. I prefer the Intrepid-class in terms of looks and performance compared to the Luna. Named after the ship that Captain Cook commanded when he landed on Australia (I'm an Aussie).

      Klinks:

IKS Kortovar, B'rel-class Bird-of-Prey. Just came up with a name that sounded good to my ears, that sounded 'klingon'.

IKS Gra'kor, Vorcha-class Attack Cruiser. Same as above.

My main ship, the Odyssey class, is the USS LoPresto, named for Astrophysics professor, Dr. James Charles LoPresto of Edinboro University of PA. I've long used the name as designation for my Star Trek clubs that I've run over the years. If only they would loosen up on the numbering schemes so I could use the NCC-29665-C designation which is my club designation. Other ships are named for friends that have passed on, friends that have been left behind, or cities and rivers.:)
