It's too bad - the game has a lot of cool features - but Cryptic has jumped too many sharks in too many waters for my tastes. Only lurking about in case they start un-jumping previously jumped sharks without boldly jumping sharks that no one has jumped before.
Absolutely not, would have left the second my free month was up.
I am a Star Trek fan for over 4 decades, and truly wanted this game to succeed. Unfortunately this IP has been miss handled from the get go, all in the name of making money regardless of the quality of the product, just because of the nature of the fan base.
The fans of the IP are what has sustained this game, and the willingness to put up with sub standard quality shows the love for the IP, but really results in what we have been given, nothing remotely like Star Trek except for ship skins.
Sad really, the game could have and should have been so much more.
I feel the need to quote myself again, read the bold/red part especially.
I've played another third person game called Global Agenda, that game litterally died because the devs listened too much to what the community wanted, losing any and all focus and resulting in half assed functions it shouldn't have had like open zones, they themselves even admitted that they lost focus on a specific direction for the game because everyone wanted something different and they listened.
So yes, I much rather have Cryptic stick to their plans and take community opinion into consideration at best.
That made me laugh.
Sorry, the Dev's here are doing a fine job of half assing things as it is. STF's have been a continual work in progress. In fact just a few weeks back they made them almost unplayable and took a whole week to fix it.
Furthermore instead of having any kind of road plan, they've had delay after delay, do you know how long it's taken them to produce the Vesta?
In fact they are so behind with things that the main aim of S7 with regards to STF is to reboot everyones end game and make them grind more to give them something to do until Season 8.
There are still numerous bugs in the story episodes, that have never been and will probably never be fixed.
My Vulcan D'Kyr is so half assed that it doesn't even have it's own interior. The exterior model as well doesn't skin properly.
My keybinds constantly break, and there is a legacy bug with not being able to move for like 30 seconds after a respawn in space STF's.
And that is just the tip of the Iceberg.
The truth if if Cryptic had listened to fans, (many of whom are in the gaming industry themselves) they probably would have had a much more polished and trek-feeling game.
But the truth is since PWE took over they've been pushing exploitation and grind.:o
1) Even though it has some issues I do enjoy the space game mechanics, especially the amount of customization. This is infact one of the things that's keeping me playing this game, though I wish it was more space navy and less space dogfight.
2) If it wasn't Trek, there's a good chance I might enjoy this game much more. As it is, this game has Trek imagery and such but it doesn't really feel very Trek, especially in how poor cruisers are at damage dealing compared to escorts.
If another MMO came out with same space combat gameplay and better ground, I'd probably dump STO in a flash. As it is this is the only MMO on the market which suits my tastes.
No Star Trek = No STO for me. And after STO, I very doubt I will ever play any other Cryptic game again. If something does TRIBBLE me off, is empty promises.
"Cryptic Studio’s Jack Emmert (2010): Microtransactions are the biggest bunch of nonsense. I like paying one fee and not worrying about it – like my cellphone. The world’s biggest MMO isn’t item based, even though the black market item GDP is bigger than Russia … microtransactions make me want to die.”
Nope i wouldnt and im strongly recommending to everybody NOT to play sthis game. ****ingfilling their own pockets and TRIBBLE up abilities which make pvp useless. Pvp is ****ingboring and why do we have only 1 Kerrat or something simular to that...
I think I would have ditched it last year some time, when all my chars were max level doing nothing.
ST loyalty alone keeps it alive for me, but it's still very disappointing in a lot of areas including the scandalous lockbox system, the CBS stranglehold on content and, last but not least, the lack of distinction between fee paying customers and the f2p player base. Gold members should be rewarded properly for supporting their ongoing commitment to the the game, not just a couple of hundred zen thrown in a month as a bone and a few shinies every 100 days, then have to invest in the z-store like the f2p base.
without the license it would have different ships, episodes could be similar just set with different npc's and goals. game mechanics would be unchanged.
having said that, no. i'd have tried it, then left. the only thing that mitigates the bugs, glitches, generally horrible mechanics both ground and space is that it's star trek. even then, if S7 comes out as bad as i think it will be i'm canceling in any case. the game just doesn't have enough going for it in fun, challange and overall game play. without being star trek based i think it would have bombed from the starting gate.

No, I would not have started playing if it wasn't Star Trek. If I had started (if it wasn't Star Trek) I would have quit when it PWE took over. It seem like we are being spam'd. I hate the grinding. I don't have the time to grind I have a family and 18 toons I can't grind them all.
Not that the IP stopped me from quitting for months and cancelling my sub.
But that first month or two was pretty fun. I didn't start because it was Trek; I started because it was a space real-time combat game in 3d that wasn't a RTS, and also was cheap. Hasn't really been much to play since I finished Nexus: The Jupiter Incident; the X series wasn't doing it for me, and while EVE was very tempting, the harsh death penalties, steep learning curve, and basically being Spreadsheets Online kept me away. But when I heard that STO became F2P, and that it was actually fun and a good game as a whole (space game great, ground game average); I decided to check it out, loved it instantly, and got a sub as soon as I could. Sure, being Trek helped, but I just plain liked the pew pew and story (Trek pew pew is best pew pew).
Even if it wasn't Trek, I probably would have played just the same as I did - play through all the story content, on both sides, do some of the STF stuff, and then quit when I got everything I wanted and became bored.
Only reason I cam back was because I heard the S6 stuff was pretty keen, from a Trek board that happened to have a fleet. Too bad that didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped.
Star Trek is the only thing that keeps me in the game. Without the Star Trek IP, this game would be only a very, very average space combat mmo with lockbox madness and insane dilithium requirements.
TRIBBLE the license. If they wouldn't let me fly the Defiant, I would not be in this game. But they've done it decent justice, and I've gotten by for long spans of time just being content with the "pew pew then buy loot" routine in it.
I had high hopes when I finally tried this game this year. I flat out refuse to pay subscriptions to games on general principle. When I heard STO went F2P, I was pumped.
There must have been someone asleep at the switch. What this game SHOULD be is a seamless mesh of the best parts of Star Trek: Elite Force II and Star Trek: Bridge Commander, with some MMO-type social and questing aspects, but tuned to suit the setting.
What we have here is a (bad) cross of WoW with severely dumbed down version of Star Trek: Starfleet Command III. Squirting vinegar in my eyes sounds like more fun...
In fact, I've just checked, and yes, it stings like hell, and YES it is a MILLION times more fun. Even the physical agony is better.
And on top of it all, after years in development, two owners, THREE YEARS of subscriber funding *and* millions (probably billions actually) of ZEN purchased, this game still plays like an ALPHA test. Random crashes to desktop, random disconnects, BSODs, broken characters, and buggy content are all very commonplace. So much so that people actually accept this as normal gameplay. So did I. These are all things I have experienced frequently and regularly in the short 3 months I have played this game. I can tell you from personal experience that SW:TOR was a way better game at the BETA stage then this game will ever hope to become.
The IP is the only thing keeping this game profitable. (They definitely read the rules of acquisition on this one) Once you have their money, never give it back.
Once my Collector's Edition premium time is gone, so am I. I'll go back to Freelancer, probably. It's years older, but lightyears better. There are even fan-made Star Trek full conversions for it.
If Gene were still alive, I could only hope he wouldn't let this farce continue.
This game has the ST license and I am not playing it anymore...if it didn't I doubt it would be on my hard drive and these forums would not be visited. Holding on to whatever shred of hope I have left I guess... (this was the first time I missed a Tribble test weekend, didn't even care)
Without the Star Trek "atmosphere" , this MMO would become a very generic space game that is lately more into accumulation ( grinding ) than real story experiencing and problem solving.
Most tasks in this game are becoming repetitive and driven by Dilithium gaining and spending.
There are few "jewels" left over in the game and strangely most of them are now dating and coming from a time where a good story was somewhat important to have beside the battles and reward gains ( the Devidian and Breen story arcs come to mind ).
The "newer" stuff i saw when i set foot on Defera is only consisting of : kill this to get that much x, and stuff like that. Pure mindless grind. I quickly left the planet and head back for the STF queues were at least i can get some excitement at times, but still no story...
no, but I wonder what the game would be, with cryptic having more freedom and no IP to worry about.
meh, that so called 'noose' around their neck isn't all that tight.
consider:
would the federation be as greedy for dilithium as is apparent? (haven't seen any notes yet on doff costs being adjusted back down)
would they allow perfectly good ships to sit forever without captains? (your previous ships as you ranked up) yet offer you nothing to recommission/transfer them back to starfleet?
and i'm sure there's more i've missed...
maintaining canon is only convenient for them when they don't want to do something. CBS doesn't seem to take a whole lot of interest in maintaining the ideals and norms of the star trek universe that we've seen. game mechanics themselves don't reflect canon at all.
and one quote from mem, though it may not be entirely accurate 'we didn't allow multi-axis maneuvering because it didn't feel right' which leads to, why there are no dorsal/ventral shields. sure...it makes the game easier to develop for them. not canon...but it's easier eh? all maneuvering on a flat plane with restrictive height movement.
it's sub warfare, can't go vertical as gravity messes things up in a sub, you top out at the surface of the water, and bottom out when you reach, well...bottom. so if they didn't have the IP...this would more than likely be a sub sim mmo.

no, but I wonder what the game would be, with cryptic having more freedom and no IP to worry about.
I think the shooting stuff would make more sense.
In general, I'd probably picture Cryptic doing quite well with something like "Space Ghost Academy" as an IP. Where you play cadets like Jan and Jace, vying to become a new Space Ghost while vying against legions of Zoraks. More pew pew and more humor and they could focus on voiceover since it would just call for maybe ten actors reading in very standard styles with a fairly low threshold for acting. (Nobody expects it to be Emmy quality readings.)
I think Cryptic would be pitch perfect for a Ninja Turtles MMO or G.I.Joe. Something like Buffy could stretch them in good ways if they brought in some serious outside creative consultants because it is a comedy/action IP. (So, really, what Cryptic would need are probably realistic modern casual dress design consultants and an action/comedy script doctor.)
I think Trek was a massive adjustment and continues to be. I don't doubt Cryptic is full of Trek fans but I also think it goes against a lot of their instincts as game designers.
Take New Romulus. General reaction is pretty positive to the Adventure Zone but it seems like Cryptic has been biting their nails about whether people will embrace it. And the best received parts of Defera and Nukara Prime were the parts Cryptic was the most anxious about. I think they know, cerebrally, what we want but their instincts keep dragging them away from that.
Nope. I play because I am a Star Trek fan 1st and a MMO fan 2nd. I am also not particularly happy with the way STO has turned out either. Would you call this Star Trek?

Or something.
I suppose that explains why those Trek fans keep demanding retail non-MMO features.
