When ever I log out of the game to switch names, my remember name is still sticking with my Cryptic username.
I have tried leaving it unchecked for a some number of switches, leaving it unchecked till the next day, unchecking it and putting in my PWE name and checking it, and nothing has worked.
Is there some file I can edit to change it in the STO folder? I just need to take off three letters and my Cryptic name equals my PWE name.
The launcher is fine, I don't have to do anything but type my password on the first log in to game.
It's the log in screen when you logged off that's not saving my PWE username, which means the data would be saved in the game's files, since the game is still running at this point.
Yeah, launcher seems to get the username from either the registry and a prefs file in the game directory. I can't find any mention of my 'new' PWE username, so I presume that when the launcher passes on the login details to Cryptic's server, it's there that the 'old' username is reused.
Thankfully I made work-around by changing my PWE username but I don't think that's practical for other users.
PS Why couldn't they just and 'STO_' or 'Cry_' as a prefix to all existing usernames, then give customers a one-time option to change it later...
I expect the "fix" is going to involve uninstalling and reinstalling. I hope I'm wrong. I made a ticket for this same issue, but I don't expect anything to come out of it.
To clarify my issue, this is not a issue when logging in for the first time. This is only a problem when logging out of the game in order to transfer to a new character.
Using "Remember my username" fills in the old Cryptic account username. Obviously, it would help if I could have my new PW account name autofill instead.
And forget about replying as well, unless you also wish to report you having the same issue, or actually have a solution (other than uninstalling and reinstalling).

It has to be in the game files, as I copied the game directory to another computer after just running the installer to save on patch time, and it remembered my old Cryptic login on changing chars, instead of PWE, which it had only ever been used on that system.
I never bothered tracking down the issue, as my PWE account name is just one letter off of my Cryptic name.
I do not believe it is in the game files, per say.
I had opened gameprefs.pref with Notepad++ and edited BOTH the username and login lines with my PWE name and the client still returned with the Cryptic name. I tabbed back to Notepad++ and it asked if i wanted to refresh the document because and program had modified it. I let it refresh and the client had removed the line for the PWE name. I exited the game and the line returned after another prompt to refresh because a program had made changes to the file.
The game client is pulling from the account servers and just using the gameprefs.pref file to temp store information as it is running.
I assume this means Cryptic/PWE need to update the database the game client looks to and add the PWE username so the client can pull it. Without it the client is just filling in the Cryptic login.

I also modded the gameprefs.pref , and after logging in and out, found my old Cryptic username autofilled in when I had the "Remember my username" box checked.
I now believe that not even uninstalling/reinstalliing STO would correct this issue. In short, there's nothing we, as players, can do to fix this. This is on PW's end.

Has anyone wth issue actually tried a clean install? Just because that particular file isn't affecting things doesn't mean another couldn't be. Not that PW/Cryptic having the old username on their servers confusing the client is far fetched, just wanting to be thorough.
Seconded - I'm having the same issue when the logging out within the game client -
The game client will simply NOT save the last user name. I've attempted to toggle it on and off, and the old Cryptic account user name still appears in he login field.
This is also exacerbated by the game client's frequent disconnections ever since the changeover to the PWE forum!
Please fix these issues!
Thank you.

I went ahead and made a ticket, and the reply I got confirmed that this is on PW's end, and there is nothing we as players can do to fix it. PW says we have to manually input our username for each relogin until the problem is fixed by them.
I'd cut and paste the reply, but support frowns on that. I know from experience.
If you're reading this, it's probably too late. But on the small chance...
Let's say your current Cryptic userID is '12345'. Make a PWE userID that's... '123451'
That way when you link them, you just need to press '1' then TAB and then enter your password (or paste it). Thing is, you'd had to have known about this issue.
The inconvenience is if both accounts share the same email address, you'd need to change that on one account. You might also be able to change the actual userID (it's just one field in your customer record and is NOT the most important one but good luck if you don't know someone).
PS Someone at Cryptic just fix this already (it's reading the WRONG field... get the DB guy to fix it)
most anoying as i have to change the user name and type in my password which if u have lots of charaters and doff alot u spend alot of time logging out and in.
I have this issue as well and it is annoying! However, the simple fix would be to do what just about every other MMO does. Have a switch character option instead of having us logout to actually switch toons!
I think we need to continue to write here, so that they see that this is the most important issue right now and hopefully they will react if it has 10 pages and is always on page 1.
I've been reporting this problem for over 6 months now. No fix and no reply. In game tickets deleted like they never existed. Can they please fix this? It's not like they haven't had 6 MONTHS to fix it. Thanks.
And I'm old, not dead.
If your're so smart how come you don't own everything?

6 months my azz, this problem only showed up when people linked accounts, which isn't even a month old yet, and it's going to happen to everyone who has a different cryptic and PWE username.

Account linking has been around since Free to Play hit. Only the absolute requirement to do so is new, as it was previously optional.

May want to wait to get someone to verify this as I haven;t tried it myself

So how did you change your PWE username?

Are you sure you just didn;t wait long enough for everything to fill out?
