lovely very spacious interior from the get go and thank you for the different levels being accessed by ramps instead of changing instances by using turbo lifts stores look mice ground weapons on racks look exotic
.
I'm really interested in getting some ambient starship traffic and visible docks, but in such a way that we don't get lag from it, I'm thinking low poly models for medium range and sprites for farther away. More details on that thread...
But maybe a 1200 vert model for closer, 600 for medium range, sprites for long range... etc...
The main lounge area looks good. The other levels are just a quick rehash of old, outdated Starfleet designs. There are much better assets already in game than what is seen there.
I really thought we arrived at a point where the devs would provide good-looking, sleek interiors. What we see here in the science, engineering, tactical areas is just on the same level as the Season 2 ship interiors. And that's not a compliment by any means.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] "Sometimes you have to do things that you hate, so you can survive to fight another day."
The interiors you have access to, are intended to be at the very tippy tops of each base. . .
The tippy tops which haven't even been built yet on the T0 bases. . .
I'll discuss with others on Monday.
Has anyone acquired a T1+ base? Are the interiors different?
Tumertacofangboy's comment there could imply that interiors change based on what level of progression you're at. This makes sense, but could also mean a lot of this feedback is irrelevant. I, for one, would expect more barebones rehashing of existing stuff at T0. I would hope my 100% maxed out fleet base would look more pimp, though.
I really hope this is just Tier 0. In a few hours we will now, I guess.
Otherwise I might be a bit cranky. Usually I'm on the lenient side, when it comes to criticizing the game and Cryptic. But if those sloppy interiors are here to stay (some of which are copy/pasted from some very early game maps), that would sorta cross a line with me.
I mean, come on guys! In recent releases there were some very awesome interiors (TOS & Belfast ship interiors, revamped DS9 parts, Facility 4029, Odyssey bridge, Utopia Planitia). Show some love for the lower decks on the starbases!

Actually, this is not even supposed to be Tier 0. From Tacofangs' comments, he didn't design the starbases with these interiors in mind, and now has to go back and fix the external models to match that huge dome we're seeing for the main area.
I think it wasn't originally intended for fleets to access interiors at T0, and even at <T5, these interiors were supposed to be smaller.

That's not what I got out of Taco's comments. The Fleet interior (OPS) was supposed to be at the top of the Starbase - always. He wasn't aware the interior was accessible at Tier 0, so now he changes the exterior model.
I don't remember him saying that the interiors were supposed to be smaller. And still, this doesn't say anything about the layout of the lower decks. But again, we'll see in a few hours/days when the first Starbases hit Tier 1.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] "Sometimes you have to do things that you hate, so you can survive to fight another day."
The Interiors are the same at all Tiers. You will be able to unlock new details and such, but the overall room shape/size/layout will remain the same.
I built the exteriors before the interiors were built. I talked some with Sam and Denis, who built the interiors, and they understood where they were intended to be on the exterior of the starbases. These are very much like bridges, they exist at the very top of the upper domes on each tier of each starbase.
However, my original understanding was that the Tier 1 construction phase (which everyone seems to be calling T0), would be entirely under construction. It would not have an accessible interior, nor would it be able to fight. As such, I built both the Klingon and Fed T1 Constructions, as just being a bunch of girders. No lights, no finished areas that could house a usable interior.
That idea has apparently changed. I don't have to modify any other tiers. Everything from T1 on already has the area intended to contain the interiors. The only model that has to be modified is the T1 construction, and it should be fairly straight froward to copy those areas from the completed versions.
ETA: These starbases are huge. Even the T1 starbase has way, way, way more room in it than the interior you have access to. There is no issue in fitting the interiors into the lower tier starbases.
Not worried about it, just caught me off guard as I hadn't heard of the change yet.
So, Taco, will there be an overhaul of the lower decks interiors (engineering, science, tactical)? Do you know anything?
There have been a few complaints that those rooms don't fit the newer design aesthetics of STO - they might even have been mostly copy/pasted from some very early game maps.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] "Sometimes you have to do things that you hate, so you can survive to fight another day."
Hmm that is disappointing that going up in tiers doesn't change the interiors. Ideally would have liked to see a TRIBBLE interior for the first tier which ingame is 0 atm (nothing unlocked yet) then the next tier would have nicer interior stuff then it cleans up and advances in tech visually as it goes till last tier. Would make perfect sense as you wouldn't really have final tier interiors when your in a just established fleet with the bog standard base which is still being put together.
Think of drazona as a tier 0 and with drazona when it was new as end tier. Kinda thing.
The way its been done as a one interior for all tiers is a bit lazy.
Tho from what i have seen the interiors do look quite nice tho are more fitting for say tier 3 or 4 in design and tech im thinking. I would have hoped for more variety through the tiers tho, as said previously.
Exterior ones arn't too bad, tho i dont like the klingons ones from screenies i've seen as they seem kinda simplistic in design with nice textures on imo. Fed ones like the last ones look really nice tho.
Ah, I thought you might have worked on both. My thanks to those artists its great work!
But I got a real Champs vibe from Ops when I walked in, very much like the Moonbase hideout. Wonder if we'll ever get a blast shield for that huge dome hehe
Functionality wise I think the conference table would be cool.
From a pure aesthetics point, a holographic representation of your base in the center of Ops would be nice. A combination of the recessed base used on the Utopia Planitia interior, and the holograpic ESD model in Quinns' office on ESD.
If it could change as your base rose through the Starbase tiers it would be awesome, but if I understand correctly, that would require having 5 different version of the Ops map.
So, Taco, will there be an overhaul of the lower decks interiors (engineering, science, tactical)? Do you know anything?

Agreed on this part. The Tactical room especially, is just a re-use of an interior used in 2 FED missions. The "ops" area of the Fed Starbase certainly looks unique, but still relies on the old consoles. Would like to see more "Odyssey Bridge" style consoles in use, as well as a revamping of all the department areas (Tac, Sci, Eng), to make it look more 2409-style.
Any plans for an "Admirals office", or a "Briefing room" attached to the starbases, primarily for use as social areas and RP?
Still annoyed at the fact that there is going to be ZERO customization to both interior and exteriors. One would think, a developer like Cryptic Studios, who previously helmed City of Heroes (Supergroup bases), and created Champions Online (hideouts), would allow SOME level of customization by the players.
I don't know of any plans to revamp the lower decks. Considering those were JUST made, I can't image they are planning to redo them already.
THIS, is a blatant lie if there ever was one. As mentioned above, the "Tactical" deck is a re-use of an area that was used in 2 previous FED missions. It was hardly "just made".
HA HA! I have had no influence over the interiors. These are being built by two other artists. All I did was the exteriors.
I don't know of any plans to revamp the lower decks. Considering those were JUST made, I can't image they are planning to redo them already.
Any chance you could poke those devs in the direction of this thread? I mean, the OPS looks quite good and Odyssey-esque (even though a bit silly at tier 0). The lower decks are disappointing and don't even feel like they belong on the same station (or were even created in the same production timeframe as the OPS map).
There should be a bit more love given to these interiors - after all Starbases are the next big thing for STO. It would be a shame if they were left stranded on the same level of design philosophy as ship interiors were four Seasons ago (with the free interiors getting ZERO love ever since they went live).
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] "Sometimes you have to do things that you hate, so you can survive to fight another day."
What I found interesting is that the only "new" map was the magnificent Ops level and everything else was a reskin. Engineering was the Captains Table Exchange. Science was the interior sickbay and science rooms, and Tactical was the Listening post from "Hide and go Seek". But nevertheless, good work on the interiors. I'm just hoping that they become less "empty" as the size of the starbase increases.

Honestly, this would not surprise me in any way, but I really hope that it is not true. So many of the old interior assets were weak to begin with. They lacked immersion and purpose suggested by a good form/design.
I suppose on the plus side, at least they found something to do with the Captain's table?

I had the same impression. I also started to wonder if they have plans of adding personal travel powers like flight, rocketboots or super jump, so that we could use that empty space above our heads and access consoles and screens that cryptic guys keep installing 5 meters above floor level.

Did anyone notice that the Tactical Office (inverted ready room) and Engineering Lab (redress / merge of various science labs) aren't on the "tier 0" map but are still accessable?
Also, what's with the "locked" doors - one more locked door on Tac, 2 in Engineering, and one off OPS? Are they reflecting "areas to be opened" as the base tiers up?
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Tumorboy mentioned that he did not believe the maps would be changing at all as the stations tier up. There may be some decoration assets that change, but not the map itself. This was just what he recalled, or thought, which may not be 100% true.

Well, hopefully. Be interesting what they got planned.
To be honest, makes me question what they got planned for the other Hubs as well? If FS's have all the accomodations of regular Hubs, then what reason is to go them anymore?
Only reason to visit ESD would be to talk to Quinn, Foundry missions, the Galaxy Race, and the odd Q Visit.
K7 use to be PvP central, but with FS's nextdoor and PvP being phased out, only reason to go there is the Devidian missions.
SB39, just missions.
DS9, only saving grace is the STF store. Which made Omega Fleet empty.
This is why I was hoping Fleets could choose to be stationed at an existing Starbase / Hub than building a new Starbase. Because you got the necessities right there and you don't have ghost-towning. And I bet people would love to have quarters on DS9 or on K7.

I actually meant that they reused the physical room from the Captain's Table as the Engineering level on the starbases. So the Captain's Table itself gets no love, but the room asset is used.

I also agree that the interior could be a more diverse. I spent minutes running around the science deck thinking I was going around in circles because the rooms look the same. Also amused at the Preserver Icon being studied in Engineering.
For a tier 0 base I think the biggest issue is that the interior feels inconsistant, the ops level is dark and moody while the others are brighter, I think standardising the lighting and adding more "scaffholding" doodads to give the impression that the base is still under construction would be useful.
As it is, the ops level is far too "open" with little to look at. At least some props or ai characters doing some "building" would give the impression that something is going on. I forsee many newbies to the game getting their first base and going "is this it?"
