Bridge Officer Ranks

aexraelaexrael Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Looking at the List of Star Trek characters and ranks, you'll find that very few crew members beyond the First Officer is of Commander rank. And often the First Officer is a Commander.

It makes sense to rename the current Bridge Officer ranks accordingly
    Ensign
    Lieutenant Junior Grade
    Lieutenant
    Lieutenant Commander

Reserving Commander as something special, for the designated First Officer (Which should grant unique bonuses for the Ship and Away teams).

it is just a level measurement, use the tailor and put whatever rank you want on them. My sig used to have a link to my crew, 90% commander level for the game, but ranked as I wanted.

Actually most ships do. Not just as a second in command designation but also purely as a rank.

A Commander will be the First officer but there's usually at least one more acting as the XO, Executive Officer who leads the night shift crew.

THen there are COmmand ranked officers in various departments, many Chief Medical Officers are Commander ranked.

Riker and Crusher were both Commanders, troi also became a Commander in season 7 i believe (I remember her having to do some bridge officers exam or something)

random fact: Marina Sirtis originally auditioned for the role of Tasha Yar and Denise Crosby for the Role of Deanna Troi. Funny how things work out.

Same. I've got them all in the DS9 admiral uniform though. I just like the look.

Yep, I would have liked to see the Wesley Snipes Geordi. or the Yaphet Kotto Picard, it would have been very different.

XO and First Officer are actually the same thing. But you're correct that they do have 2nd and 3rd officers IRL. These are usually section heads and the additional title is only used as needed. This is how I set up my officers. They're all commanders and I'm a VA in-game, but on their uniforms I made myself a Captain, my senior Tac officer is my XO and a Commander, and my senior Engineer and Science officer are Lt. Commanders. All others are Lieutenant or less, with other section heads all being a full Lieutenant.

Yep, that's what I do, except my main stays VA, and my alts wear Capt.

I have myself wearing captain pips, my first officer wearing commander pips, my chief science officer wearing commander pips (as she is also my second officer) and everyone else Lt Cmndr or less, and I address them as such, despite all being trained up to the commander level. Personally, I don't think this needs changing, as long as we can select what rank is on their uniform.

May I just say that while I agree with the idea of adding in Lieutenant jg to BO ranks, I disagree with the reasoning. After all, lets not forget that as early as star trek 5 the Enterprise had 3 CAPTAINS (Kirk, Spock and Scotty 'Captain of Engineering') AND 3 Commanders (McCoy, Uhura and Chekov).

That said, I think leveling our BOFFs is way too easy. Adding Lt. jg might help. I also think that through much pain and toil we should be able to bump up one or two of our most senior commanders to Captain once we hit Admiral.
