how exactly did the arguments against death penalties get totally overheard?

    Don't give up craig. we don't wat dp's ^^

I have seen just as many FOR death penaltys as against.....

Again if someone WANTS a DP...fine...let them have it...

But for those of us that DONT.... please dont FORCE it on us. Of course this depends on the severity of the DP.... have to pay energy creds to fix your ship, Maybe..... loose a BO....heck NO.

As for the REST of the Updates..... IM TOTALLY JAZZED and you have my sub for as long as it takes! Good job!

Thanks for the SotG, Zinc. A lot of good info, delivered as I've come to expect from you (brilliantly). :) I like the idea of the death penalty being linked to the difficulty slider as some have mentioned.

Also, I'm looking forward to Tribble getting started and working. All in all, a very nice read, and thanks again!

It would be nice for death to matter, but not TOO much... I for one find the need to spend very much "money" repairing my ship or components extremely distasteful. Enough to put the point across, yes, thousands of creds, no thanks.

Maybe a geometrically reducing penalty on end-of-mission rewards if you die? Then again, I think this would lead to people being more self-centered in game, not taking damage to save a teammate, etc... And it would suck for me, as a cruiser who is designed to take damage for my escort buddies! I want the same reward for the mission, because I played an important part.

Also, spreading the penalty around wouldn't work, because then some idiot you don't (or do?) know runs straight into a brace of Terran Empire Majestics, and everyone loses, no matter how many engineering teams you throw at them. Much rage ensues :(

In the end, I think there is no good way I'm aware of to introduce that concept in this game as it stands, but I'd be happy to see what you smart folks come up with to refute my claim!

...Just be prepared for the inevitable nerd-rage if you make it too severe. Or if you do anything, I'm sure, but there will be MORE if you do that ;)

P.S. Cruiser turn speed. Yes, PLEASE. I'm running a Galaxy variant right now and even with evasive maneuvers and a 22% turn boost console it takes me a year and a half to turn around. I end up focusing my battles not on how to kill the enemy, but how to end up facing the right way after they die. Not nearly as fun.

Maybe give a sizable turn speed bonus when not in combat?

Thanks for the game so far, guys. I had just enough faith in you to buy lifetime, so I'm counting on you to make logical, honorable decisions re: it's future. This coming from a guy with Klingon and Vulcan tattoos should carry weight, I hope? :)

While I like the idea of a death penalty, I think it needs to be VERY carefully executed or abandoned.

Those MMO's where death meant finding your corpse to recover inventory or items were painful. But those where you died, respawned at some arbitrary safe zone with some light damage and minor debuffs applied for 10 mins, were quite bearable. This gave the feeling of importance that defeat should have, but doesnt ruin the game dynamic.

I dread the idea of having to search for my ship again if i die so that I can recover items.

Also, agree with those who brought up Deep Space Encounters where you warp straight into a massive furball of angry Romulans and get destroyed before you can blink. That would need to be addressed if a death penalty were imposed.

Well, thats my 2 energy credits worth...

Great State of The Game Craig! Sounds like you devs have some great things coming our way. You guys had (and still do) your work cut out for you but it looks to me like you have a pretty decent plan.

    Now...about that Klingon PvE content...

I have to say for one, I'm looking forward to all these changes. And hopefully as someone who loves star trek and this game as much as the rest of your "core group", I can apologize somewhat because I know how impatient I am and how impatient we all must seem to you.

So I thankyou Cryptic for working around the clock hours to keep us all happy. And may I also say that we thankyou for not listening to the "Mass" opinion and keeping it true to Star Trek and what we all love. My Fleet and I will be here a long....long...time.

I don’t think you need to worry about the death penalty. If I really wanted a vicious death penalty I guess I would be one of those people who play Eve, but I never got around to that. While I’m here plugging my own agenda I would like to put in a plug for the Ferengi as the next playable faction.

WTF?!?!! Seriously Child please!!! This is a joke right, I mean you guys do have a plan or something. Holy TRIBBLE, wow just freaking wow. You mean a whole new server so I can pay to test your work, my god, next I am going to offer my kids school 50 bucks a month so I can grade papers on my weekends!!! I am am going to get up really early on week days and start paying a construction company 50 bucks to pour concrete for them.

Test your own TRIBBLE with the people PAID to test your TRIBBLE, so when the TRIBBLE comes out I can PAY to enjoy the TRIBBLE without falling through the floor of the dam map, or confront an enemy that you know has the courtesy to show up.

Now back to your neverwinter nights toolset and create more hit "f" near the the blinking thing missions after I hit my space bar a dozen times.

My lord if only I could get my 50 bucks back. State of the game, you mean state of the shell. Two years of development my rear end, looks like two stoners, a chimpanzee, and a couple of the etrade babies through the game together in 2 months. Have you seen sector space, I mean really have you seen it??? Sad thing is is all you needed was a map, a freaking map like galactic civilizations, or freaking STAR CONTROL 2. But no we get a shoe box, with little circles for systems, and can only visit 1 planet in the system. Now I know in the 21st century we took planets out of the SOL system but in the 24th century they took out 7 more??

You threw the ships together so fast that even I can tell that the ones in the shows and movies don't look like the ones in the shows in and movies. Hell I miss stuff like that all the time, but this game (as you so call it) I can clear see the errors you might as put a big red flag on it.

Don't get me started on the fact that your trying to turn the bridge officers into a trading card game, lame.

    Whatever.

Wow now that was....something. So much stuff crammed into that. Good read, and looking forward to it.

Now I have to ask since it wasn't on the list, what's the ETA on letting people choose their instance again when changing zones so they can better meet up with friends without having to zone twice?

I fixed this last week, but I only fixed it in one of the two places it needed to be. You can change instances in Deep Space Encounters and Fleet Actions using the Change Instance button on the map window (M Key). The other change instance button (on the HUD minimap) should be fixed in the same build that has the new raidisode.

I am incredibly happy that Zn put something out -- now do it again in 4 weeks!

Seriously though, if there's one thing that I appreciate most its the Devs taking time out to communicate with the community. Ambiguities, misconceptions and uncertainties drift away and I feel like I can start looking forward to the future.

I'm only Commander 4, but the more I play and the more I get involved with others the more I'm appreciating STO.

So I'm in for at least couple more months. Thankfully the wife is outta town for that long! HA!

Not impressed with a death penalty. Frankly I won't bother to try and go after the more difficult stuff like the Crystalline Entity, because dieing a few dozen times would destroy me. And that was fun. Being able to try new ways to kick its butt is what is fun. This? Nope. Not impressed.

I am for the updates but having a death pentaly is dumb. You can die way to much in this game without trying. Take those random encounters when your flying around. You get hit by an enemy contact then suddenly in the fight you warp in already getting hit by tons of ship! Unless they fix that, this death penatly is bad!

Also I think as an add, you should put in or allow Fleet Starbases!!! That would be fun. Have a certain criteria to get one, and pay for it, then you can have the Fleet manage it with certain places to build them. Then you can have anyone come aboard but the fleet guys can purchase things for the starbase like vendors, and design the layout and purchase more rooms etc!! That would rock, heck some of the proceeds of sales can go to the fleet too or something. Then you could incorporate more PVP and have klingons try to take the station over time to time with NPCs or human fleets/enemies!

how cool would that be!it would give admirals something more to do and manage and certain positions for ranks etc!

I honestly think there needs to be more of an open PVP in this game to keep it going! Just like what they did in Conan!

    My 2 cents

    Next playable race = Romulans.

Your damn right I whip you while I hug you. I want the best from this MMO. It's Star Trek, not WoW, it needs to be good.

I think you should stick webcams in the cryptic offices so we can watch you. After that is done, you can all be fitted with shock collars, so when we spot somebody getting lax, or just having a break, we can shock... urm... encourage them to return to work.

    P.S

    Death Penalty Bad.

Also, is there any way to make interiors better before you add more? They are abnormally huge, they need to shrink a bit. I'd also like my bridge fixing. I have the Delta bridge option on my Nova class ship. The ship is tiny and it has an Akira bridge, can anything be done?

Also, some new Emotes would be nice. STO is very limited emote wise and it would be good for RP.

    Keep going!

#1 Maintain a quality story and keep the episodic feel you've started!
#2 Fill out the FED and KLINGON content before you go adding another faction.
#3 It has to be Romulans.... You understand?

It's funny, the other company to make a StarTrek game that I enjoyed and that had endless potential was called Decipher... Cryptic maybe you can go on as long with as many game expansions as they did, but DON'T TRIBBLE it up by spreading content too thin over a bunch of game mechanics.

Work to make more missions more involving, deep and challenging. Encounters that aren't just MORE ships that are MORE powerful, rather ones that make you think of a way to beat it are great! I can't wait to see quests/raids that require some group co-ordination rather than succeeding with any random Zerg tactic.

You guys are doing great and I think you can do even better!

I think you should have a community mission writing contest... Maybe a mission called "Dervish" will win?

Thank you for the update; I feel vindicated even more now for sticking to my guns. I'm still giving you guys 6 months (as I've done to every MMO that I've enjoyed at launch since WoW); but I have faith in your ability to perform.

The only thing I don't like seeing in the post is the subject of a death penalty ... this seems to be something that is wanted by a very vocal minority here and I'm a bit disappointing that you guys caved in after all about the issue. But oh well, I guess every other MMO that I've played has that complete waste of time implemented (so that makes it an MMO staple), just hope you guys can make it not too much of a pain or not just plain annoying.

Everything else looks good though. Keep up the good work and keep the good stuff coming!

Death penalty for pvp; sure. If nothing else just lengthen the timers a bit so its more difficult to win a battle simply by attrition.

For PVE, I don't really see the need for it gameplay-wise. As another member pointed out in this thread, adding a penalty to will raise a lot of issues. It will most likely require a lot of tuning to almost every episode and encounter. Issues with balance or difficulty can be largely ignored as it is due to the lack of death penalty but will actually need to be addressed if that changes. This would effect both existing content and future content. I think we may want to see how future content goes before death penalties roll out. Lack of death penalty gives you a bit of latitude when experimenting with more original content.

Also the number of different currency types is off-putting. It seems like in an effort to keep loyal to the IP you have steered clear of one currency in favor of about 6 more vague currency proxies. In the end between all the credits, merits, badges, I just wind up using the exchange for simplicity.

All in all a good update and I like the fact that you are listening.

The use of energy as a death penalty would actually give me something to do with my energy, since there is NO in game use for it after Lieutenant as far as I can tell... badges are the only thing that get you anything you actually want. Not very true to the TV shows if you ask me. Improvements to tech should be badges or memory alpha, but the basic item should be purchasable with energy anywhere. You just can't buy class 10 dual tetryon beams (for example) in the first place. But I'm supposed to believe that they would be on someone's ship to drop?

But lets be clear... if PVE death penalties occur then I'm not doing another defend the sector mission. It is already sooooo ridiculous to be dropped into the middle of a swarm of enemies, rather than approach them from afar. Respawning in the middle of that "suspension of disbelief" destroying, "secondary level of belief" destroying, totally unrealistic mess, being deprived of the chance to approach with tactics, and then getting a death penalty for it... all while I'm waiting for a mission reset? Forget it.

For my money...I think the romulans should be the next playable race...

And I like the idea of a MILD death penalty...like a debuff or hull and shield damage upon respawn, etc.

Difficulty Slider= WIN. Ground combat is WAY too easy right now...i'm not even that good at the game and i dominate that shiznat without trying.

Great State of the Game address though Craig. Just image how much more trying it would be to deliver that on TV or at a press conference :)
