1 : a measure of the unavailable energy in a closed thermodynamic system that is also usually considered to be a measure of the system's disorder, that is a property of the system's state, and that varies directly with any reversible change in heat in the system and inversely with the temperature of the system; broadly : the degree of disorder or uncertainty in a system
2 a : the degradation of the matter and energy in the universe to an ultimate state of inert uniformity b : a process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder
3 : chaos, disorganization, randomness
I tend to use it in the idea of Second Law of Thermodynamics, basically I have lots of energy that has to flow to lower energy system, my phasers do a good job of achieving that.
Also out of chaos comes order, but that can also been seen in fractals.
Bella Fortuna - Belle is the captain (Doctor )- Good Fortune/Good Luck - Bella = beautiful, fortuna = luck/fortune
Chandelier - Chantelle is the captain (Engineer ) - No other reason
Animo et Fide - Adelle is the captain ( Tactical ) - Courageous and Faithful
USS Infinity is named after one of my sims.
USS Batavia Should require little explantion
USS Ra'Tar named after a bird of prey species from Romulus.
USS De Ruyther See Batavia.
USS Trafalgar.
I've noticed another ship of the same name but that doesn't bother me.
That name came from my wife, she saw me struggling with a name that would fit an escort, a small ship with the odds usually stacked against it. She said "remember the battle of Trafalgar? What about the Victory?" I had already noticed a USS Victory though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Trafalgar
USS Lord Nelson. Similar reason as above.
USS Trismegistus is the science ship I experimented with.
Tac officer's ships
USS Ayanami Rei, current ship named after an Eva Pilot (background is disputed but she was created from the remains of Yui.. anyway, was a strange series and kind of dusturbing.. but like a traffic accident, you had to watch..)
USS Anubis, (soverign class) was watching Stargate and thought I'd stick to naming his ships starting with the letter A
USS Artemis, (Defiant), named after the Greek goddess of the hunt.
USS Atlantis (Galaxy Class), sticking with A's and SG-Atlantis was on Scy-Fy
Sci officer's ships
USS Kishijoten, current ship. Japanese Goddess of Luck and was my AD&D Samurai's goddess since 1980.
USS Loviatar, Intrepid class. Finnish goddess of hurt, maiden of pain. I really hate the Intrepid class and the name fit since it was torture to fly around in the 'shoe horn' of starfleet. Needless to say, leveling went fast in that ship.
USS Oceanus, just left name it randomly gave me on it. (Eyeball ship).
USS Ishtar, recon sci vessel. Babylonian Goddess of war and love and my wizard's diety since 1980. Had high hopes for this ship but hated how it looked so stuck with the Destiny hybrid.
USS Hecate, long range science vessel. Greek goddess of dark magic. Changed name after a Klingon player called me 'evil' after a pvp match. He wasn't being mean, it's just a science ship can do some evil things to other players
USS Dark Star, light cruiser. Was the name of our elf spelljammer ship way before any other other references were ever associated with that name.
Other ships of note-
IKS Devil's Cross (after the A-10 warthog), IKS Pon'Far Express (self-explanitory), IKS Kuo-Toa (um... play DnD), IKS Tiger's Claw (Wing Commander), IKS Small Fries (tribute to Starfleet Battles)
My current ship is the "Fairlight", it's named after an old C-64 game actually. Mainly to celebrate all those good times from the dawn of computer gaming.
Captain Pancho Pizarro Gonzalez commanding the USS Amistad at the moment.
All my ships are named in Spanish, per the captain's heritage and my own Spanish-speaking background:
USS Esperanza (hope)
USS Alma (soul)
USS Milagro (miracle)
USS Guerrero (warrior)
USS Amistad (friendship; also the name of a couple of famous Schooners)
Next tiers will likely be:
USS Doncella (maiden)
USS Amancaya (Incan mythological heroine; also my main in CoX )
Still considering:
USS Fortuna (fortune)
USS Sacramento (sacrament)
USS Paloma (dove)
USS San Cristobal (St. Christopher)
USS Santa Rosa (St. Rose)
The USS Sun Tzu after the military genius. My RP fleet is StarFleet Special Operations: Lancer Armada so it fits well especially since the Federation is at war.
If I remember, my Olympic class science vessel came with the name Orca. I think I left it at that, because I thought it was quite appropriate, as it looked kind of like a giant whale:)
Miranda class - USS Vigilant. I figured my Miranda was ~115 years old and so I tried to pick a name that was consistent with the name of the Reliant back in that time.
Constitution/Excalibur class - USS Masamune. I decided that all Excalibur classes should be named after swords (or have to do with swords).
Dakota class - USS Paladin. I just liked the name of the Holy Knight.
Galaxy class - USS Andromeda. I wanted my Galaxy class named after a galaxy and Andromeda - though not terribly original - sounded good.
They are the names of all the Iowa Class Battleships, that at one point in time, were used by the United States Navy. I have no idea what I'm going to name my Tier 5 Cruiser though. Lol. I've run out of names.
My Tier 1-3 ship names were picked from existing or retired US Naval ships, but I really liked the name "Odysseus" for my Galaxy class. Seemed fitting for an "exploration cruiser".
The Tier 5 ship I will have to give some thought. The greek names are appealing to me.
Here's my list of characters and their ships, and the reason behind their names:
Character Ship
BG5 Be'toQ Blood Oath
The name Blood Oath was chosen so as to be banner declaring Be'toQ's dedication to Klingon victory in the war with Starfleet and against any enemy of the Empire.
RA5 Torrix Gungnir
The name "Gungnir" is the name of the mightiest spear, wielded by the Allfather Odin. The ship Gungnir is named so, as the Starfleet Advanced Escort class ship is the spearhead of the Federation fleet, and the vanguard of any battle group.
KDF LC Khel Batlh'avwl
Translated this ship's name means "Honor Guard" or "Guardian of Honor"
SF Cmdr K'tal Pathfinder
This Starfleet science vessel seeks far and wind and leads the way for reconnaissance for Starfleet.
SF Lt. Ra'sek Gettysburg
This Starfleet cruiser is named after an ancient battlefield on Earth, considered the greatest battle fought by Americans, where 170,000 casualties occurred when Americans fought each other in civil war. The ship is name thus in honor of the resilience and fortitude of the warriors who fought in this battle.
My Miranda was named Indefatigable, after the H.M.S. Indefatigable, from Haratio Hornblower.
My Nova is named Procyon, after the battle of Procyon V shown in ENT: Azati Prime. Mainly for the reason that the nova class was still there and kicking derri
I've kept the same name all the way through for my science officer, USS Chavasse. After Noel Chavasse, a British Army doctor in WW1, one of only 3 people in 150 years to win the Victoria Cross (Britain's highest award for valour) twice.
My engineer is in the USS Chard, after John Chard, another holder of the VC. He was the Royal Engineers officer in command of the garrison at Rourke's Drift.
My tac officer's ship is USS Inayat, after Noor Inayat Khan. She was a member of the British Special Operations Executive who served as an agent in occupied France in WW2, she was eventually captured, refused to break under interrogation and was killed in Dachau. She was awarded the George Cross, which ranks alongside the Victoria Cross in status but is awarded under different circumstances.
They are the names of all the Iowa Class Battleships, that at one point in time, were used by the United States Navy. I have no idea what I'm going to name my Tier 5 Cruiser though. Lol. I've run out of names.
How about the USS Montana... for the next class of WWII battleships.. but the class of ships was canceled...
Oh and I'll redo my name list as I haven't posted it in a while...
Alex Chilton - Indie Rocker who passed away recently.. (not very trek ish I know)
Livingstone - Famous Explorer/doctor.. (Doctor Livingstone I Presume)
Oak Ridge - Energy Lab in the US (worked on the Atomic Bomb in WWII)
Watson - Of Sherlock Holmes
Uss Assimilated, currently the Assimilated-C Captain is a borg so it seemed appropriate
USS Kandahar- in honour of the troops of all nations who are in Afghanistan
USS Loader- nickname I got at work from the drywallers
USS Bungwalliland- Mythical African colony where we based a set of miniature rules I wrote and I still like the name
I am currently commanding the Miranda-class U.S.S. Tolkien, because I am a huge Tolkien nut. Also I don't tend to spend hours on end in-game, so yeah.
I'm thinking of going with Sekigahara for my next ship, after the famous Japanese battle. Or maybe Hamasaki. Or maybe I'll keep the Tolkien theme going. It all depends on what strikes me as cool.
Comments
Derived from "Silent Sinner in Blue" one of the Touhou mangas.
....I'm being serious.
USS Challenger. I went ahead and gave it a 91986-A in memory of the Shuttle Challenger in my case.

But now if you play for more than four hours straight, you have to change your ship's name to "priapism"
And my prized USS Jack Daniels is pretty obvious.
