Hmmm . . . technically a text MUD is an MMO and I'm pretty sure there were some around in the mid-80's. I started playing one in the 90's before UO and EQ came out.

In 1985 there was an internet of sorts... you could use a modem to call up someone else's computer and if they were running an old BBS they could have games that you could log in and play. They were generally text based.
I feel obligated to ask... what MMO were YOU playing 25 years ago?
I played Kasmai Island on Compuserve in the 80's using a Hayes 300 baud modem. MMOs were around long before Al Gore invented the internet in his bathtub.
no one her is a paid customer until 02/02/10. You pre-bought the RELEASE copy, with beta and this headstart as extra incentives for your pre-order. Your money still went to pay for the final release copy of the game.
Actually i would think all us lifetimers are paid players as of headstart start date. It did come off my CC the day i put the order in.:)
Good Question... I am thinking a Taco restaurant similar to Taco Bell... Which make me wonder why the hell a game company would affiliate themselves with a crappy Taco shack.
ya id be interested if it was taco bell. whoever heard of del taco.. probably a little mom and pop taco restaurant in CA
today maybe. its been crashing unexpectedly during OB.. and dont tell me this isnt OB because the only thing that stands between whats running on the servers now and whats running on them last week is a couple little patches.
I think this game is very popular concidering this thread is only 45 mins old
Yeah, after waiting years for a Star Trek mmo, and finally getting to play one, despite what will likely be numerous launch issues, I was quite fine purchasing a lifetime subscription. It does have a good feel to it.
1. Allowed us to participate in the late stage game development
2. Kept patch, web servers online while they fixed the main servers
3. GM Posted a message on a Saturday indicating that they are aware of these problems
Let's consider what we're doing to Cryptic
1. Posting rants and whining in forums
2. Threatening to refund our monies
3. Pounding their login servers with retries
Yep...I see the issue.
If Cryptic posted a downtime estimate (start/end time) and indicated things they would not like us to do (such as try to login repeated while they are working on the problem) they would reduce the negative feelings and behaviors significantly.
They can do a lot to quiet the masses with effective communications.
LOTRO had excellent communications, and a sense of humor when they posted problem reports. They were also very timely in getting the information out.
I am, however, pleased that I can point at STO/Cryptic as a place that provide even less information about downtimes than the place I work. Now I will go back to beating on the login servers for fun.

they have tacos and burgers, fries, chili fries etc
you have got to be kidding me......have you seen some of these other MMO launches? this is not at all a bad head start. Talk to some people about what it was like when EQ1 first launched or even worse AO!!!
we are defending it as it did and is doing a very good job so far in campareison to MANY other MMO launches if it was as bad or worse then them i would back you fully but ANYONE that thinks you can know what 10k-50k people logging on at 1 time with god knows how many dif types of comp setups in all parts of the world is going to do and have all bugs fixed and ready with 10 back ups of.....everything is a moron. Even you can not predict what will happen to your own computer serfing the web not with 100% even if you are a techie or a hacker you can not know for sure and that is only 1 computer that you have to deal with.
Yes, I have seen many launches, and I agree with you that this one -- thus far -- has not been too bad. But your comment completely ignores the point of the person you were quoting. Completely.
Please fix the server problems, disconnects, etc. I like this game but I won't pay for a broken product.
Give me a break. It's a brand new mmo.... ALL mmo's come out buggy, crash, unexpected downtimes.. if you can't handle it , then do as you say - don't play.... 100s of 1000s of others will. You will not be missed.
They need to bring the matter-antimatter mixture ratio settings to an optimum balance... then have the reaction sequences corresponding to specified norms...before the magnetic plasma transfer to the server generators are at proper programmed specs!
It's just a game and when it comes to MMO's..expect stuff like this. No reason to really complain!
The first day played so smoothly! I was really impressed. Keep up the awsomeness Cryptic.
Currently, the Star Trek Online Server is down. We are aware of this issue and are currently working to bring the server back online as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on this page for updates, and notification when Star Trek Online is available again. Thank you, The Star Trek Online Team

I was there when Anarchy Online "launched". One might expect some improvements in 10 years so i guess this is the improvement. bottom line is that we pay for this product. We should expect quality but apparently that is too much to ask...

I had never heard of Del Taco before but I looked it up and I guess there is one less than an hour from me. If I had any use for a shuttlecraft I might have gone over there. Maybe.
Strange. Everytime I sit at my PC NOT playing STO the server is up. Everytime I want to log in I get server down. Just my luck...
Or is the server crashing because of me?
Comments
hahaha!

100 pages at 10-1
150 pages at 5-1
200 pages at 2-1

MUDs are MUDs... Not MMOs. Keyword here is "MASSIVE". MUDs were, by no means, massive.

So its possible they are having the same problem

(Will eat cheap tacos for free shuttlecraft) ???

Oh well, things will get better.
Now that is marketing! I love it.
