Just wondering if there's any update to any of this. I have a workaround where I have the game audio set to my USB headset, and when I switch it back to speakers it works fine. Before I log out every time I have to switch it back to USB though so I can switch it back for sound for the next time I log in. :)

So, it's not game-breaking for me, but it is pretty darn annoying. Pretty random that it's this specific card too. None of my friends have the same one. :(

For those of you who are still having trouble with sound, I have come up with another workaround that is a bit less of a hassle (once setup) and does not seem to cause any crashing. This basically redirects the game audio through a virtual cable and then right back into your soundcard or board. Don't ask me why this works as I have no idea.

    Here is what I did:

    1) Download and install "Virtual Audio Cable" (Just google it; trial version is free) and make sure you have a virtual cable setup.
    2) Open STO and under the Audio options change your Output Device to "Virtual Cable 1". Click "OK" and exit STO.
    3) Open "Audio Repeater" (this comes with "Virtual Audio Cable"). Under "Wave in" select "Virtual Cable 1" and under "Wave out" select your regular output device (probably "Realtek AC97 Audio"). Now click "Start".

Now, as long as you leave the audio repeater running you should be able to play STO with sound without having to reselect output devices. Just make sure to repeat step 3 the next time you start your computer.

Hope this helps some of you. :)

Thanks for posting the workaround. I had submitted a number of tickets over the No Sound in 64 issue. Fortunately I searched the solution in a couple of threads on this forum. For those wanting a "better" fix, keep in mind that STO is not a 64 bit application. Your Windows XP x64 will default install it as a 32 bit app in you x86 program files directory. Before I found the workaround launch code, i was simply running the game from my dual boot 32 bit environment...using the same x86 Program File directory on a shared NTFS drive. I simply wish Cryptic would have circulated this resolution more prominently. Good luck and good adventures!

    Solution :

Load STO Launcher, Click Options (before Engage), enter -ignorex64check in the advanced option field, click Ok and play with sound...:)

First off, one wonders why Cryptic didn't link to their own forum for this problem. All my questions about what's going on went away after reading this:

    http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=66853

Same company, same game engine, same flag; I assume it's the same problem.

That said, I've only had one crash since the headstart began, and that was probably a zoneing error.

Still having issues. :( I tried using the command line fix, and it worked perfect for a few hours, then the game started relentlessly crashing. After each crash, the launcher would verify every game file, and it got super annoying. So I finally got rid of the command line and just did my old work-around, which is still darned inconvenient. I wish something could be done about this. :-/

Im wondering if Cryptic will ever fix the crashing issue with adding the ignore64 tag. Seriously i love playing this game and i love it even more with sound but sometimes it crashes after 30 seconds of play time.

Hey Dev's any Eta on when this will be patched?

The problem is the realtek driver and has to be fixed by realtek.

    Hi all
(Bumping this to see if there's a fix yet, and since there's likely not, what the best sound card is to get...)

I have this problem also, but I was able to acquire an old SoundBlaster Live 5.1, but I can't get that work. Interestingly, if I boot the game with that selected as my default sound card, and then change it in game to my Realtek, i get audio, but the game crashes within a few minutes. At least its enough to hear the wonderful Nimoy blurbs when entering a new sector block..

That said I don't want to upgrade from XP 64-bit, so can anyone recommend some good sound cards or card chipsets with excellent Windows XP 64-bit edition drivers for us stubborn XP64 folks, since Creative's always seem a little lackluster? My motherboard has no PCI-Express, so either PCI or USB for me. Thanks!

    Specs
    Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition
    Gigabyte K8U-939 motherboard, Athlon64 X2 3800, 3.5 GB RAM, ATi X1950 GT
originally built in 2002, upgraded last in 2006, runs STO very, very, well :D other than the audio issue...

Your best bet would be to try and nab one of the original Sound Blaster Live! cards off of Ebay. The reason for this is that the embedded drivers in XP 64 were the last ones released so it should be a simple plug/play deal with no other drivers needed. Had a friend do this and it cured their Realtek issue once and for all since nothing was going to get him to change the OS. Here are some models to look for:

    Sound Blaster Live! Platinum CT4760P
    Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer CT4760X
    Sound Blaster Live! MP3+ CT4760M
    Sound Blaster Live! CT4760

You should be able to just search on CT4760 and pull up a LOT of options and get them for about $10 or so. The only real downside to this is that you'll not have 5.1 audio so that is something to consider if that is an issue. If you have to have a 5.1 audio sound card the best bet would be to snag an older Audigy sound card which should be easy to find for about $20 or so.

This does indeed work. Rquires not that work. Follow the instructions correctly then you may get this to work. MIght want to get the full version though. As trail version says "Trail" every 5 seconds which would get very annoying lol.

Maybe I missed it. Sorry if I did. But have you tried the XP 64 bit drivers from Gigabyte for that board.

Or gone to the realtek website and downloaded and tried their drivers

Not sure this is the reason behind it, but it's worth a shot.

Right click "My Computer" and then "Properties"

If you're using windows vista/windows 7 there should be aproximately 5 options on the left side of the properties window. Click the one named "Device Manager"

Once opened find a expand the "Sound, video and game controllers"

If you have a driver named something with Realtek and a driver named ATI, then right click the ATI driver and then remove it. The game might be conflicted by two sound drivers overplaying each other. The same issue caused lag and muted sound in "Empire - Total War" and "Napoleon - Total War"

I cannot guarentee that it will work, but it's worth the try

    ignorex64check
    - which caused me to crash (maybe?) at the deep space nine Cardassian boarder.

you can try the option to uninstall the realtek drivers completely and have win7 detect the card and load windows generic HD audio driver for the card. It has worked for some.

Running a Realtek HD Audio chipset I did the following to get audio. Let's begin.

    1) Right click on the audio icon on your tray in the lower right hand corner OR Click Start and open the Control Panel

    2) Left click 'Open volume mixer' OR Left click on Sound.

    3) If you have speakers or earphones plugged in there should be a greyed-out speaker option. If not, right click within the window and then click Show Disabled Devices.

    4) HIghlight speakers and then click Set Default on the bottom of the Sound window.

    5) Right click on RealTek Digital Output and click Disable.

While RealTek is still running the show, the HD Audio is not, therefore you should have free reign over your sound now on any program. I hope this fix works for you as much as it has for me.

If you have any questions. Please send me a message in my inbox.

The -ignore64check worked as intended, however it only worked for me when I placed it in the actually launcher under Options. It did not work when I applied it in the properties of the shortcut.

Now If I can just figure out how to deal with the network/lag issue...There is always something...meh

    5. Click OK to accept the changes

    6. Click Engage (Start the game)

This is the only resolution that worked for me. Thanks Doug!

Thank you very much. All the other support threads for this told me to go into the launcher command line, not the command line in the game options itself. :D
