No Sound on RealTek HD 64Bit Resolve

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
After encountering this problem myself and looking into others post it seems there is a slight bug with outdated audio drivers for Realtek hd 64bit drivers. If your having this trouble go to http://majorgeeks.com/Realtek_High_Definition_Audio_for_2KXP03_d4902.html and download the latest driver. This will resolve your troubles with no sound in game... well not if you forgot to plug in your speakers first lol;)

Okay, I've got an intergrated RealTek HD Audio chipset giving me the silent treatment as well. I also have some USB headphones, and I figured out how to get the sound working in a very roundabout way.

First, I set sound output in STO to use my USB headphones. Nothing happened, sound was still absent. I closed the game.

I restarted the game client- the sound worked in my USB headphones. I went into the Options menu, and switched to my RealTek HD Audio, and lo and behold, sound! Glorious sound! Unfortunately, it only works for that run. You have to remember to set STO's audio output back to the USB headphones before you exit, otherwise you'll lose the just-gained sound on your next client start and have to redo this jury-rigged fix.

This is a downright bizarre bug, since there's absolutely nothing wrong with the game's sound system per se, as it worked fine once I figured out how to do an end-run around the normal startup sequence. It looks like there's some issue with how the game initializes its sound subsystem that prevents it from properly starting in limited situations.

Please uninstall the current driver and install the latest provided by Realtek. You must uninstall the drivers before you install the new set.

    1. Download the latest drivers located at http://www.realtek.com.tw/.
    2. Go into the Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs, or Programs and Features under Win7/Vista, and completely uninstall the current installed drivers.
    3. Reboot the system.
    4. Upon restart the user will get one or more messages from Windows asking for drivers. Cancel them and allow the system to completely finish loading.
    5. Once the system has finished loading install the updated drivers and reboot when prompted.

If this does not fix your issue please try disabling the game's check for 64-Bit systems

Exit the game and bring up the Launcher, click Options, and in the "Advanced command line" box, paste this: -ignorex64check, accept the changes and try loading the game.

    Sincerely,

Thank you, Doog. Updating the drivers did not resolve my problem, but adding the -ignorex64check to the command line worked. I'll have to do more testing to see if that solution is any better than the one I came up with, as I haven't been able to test either properly in-game to see if working around this problem created another.

For me, it took the -ignorex64check switch to make it work, finally.

I have updated the drivers and put in the ignore 64 command and I still dont have any sound.

Would updating my windows xp 64-bit to windows 7 possibly fix this or is this more of a realtek issue?

Same problem on my Mac Pro 1,1 running Windows XP x64. Tried three different audio drivers, the only thing that fixed it was the -ignorex64check. Hopefully either Cryptic finds a way around the issue or RealTek patches their driver once STO ships (or now :) ).

    Sorry for this question:
Where do I find the "Advanced command line"? There is no such option under "Options".

I had this same problem; xp64, installed new driver after uninstalling old one, still no sound. Didn't try disabling the 64 bit check, as it wasn't posted when I was having the problem. Upgrading to windows 7 fixed it (I installed the newest driver before installing STO), though that's not a very good solution. I really wish xp64 was more reliable; vista and 7 use too many resources and 32bit systems can't address enough ram. ><

I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit with onboard Realtek HD audio and also had no sound. Updating Realtek drivers had no effect, but using -ignorex64check at the command line fixed the issue for me. Just an FYI.

So I got a wierd side issue to this problem...I just got this new PC (last night) and the monitor comes with speakers that are what I want to use for sound but whenever I plug the audio cable in from the back of my tower into the audio jack in the monitor, I get no sound...from anything, let alone STO. Anyone got any suggestions?

The updated drivers did not work for me and the -ignorex64check command did return sound to the game, but now the game crashes every 10-15 minutes with "fatal error due to tag -ignorex64check..." It's good to see that others are experiencing this problem because it will be more likely to be addressed in the full release or better yet, an upcoming patch for the beta client.

    1. Exit the game

    2. Bring up the Launcher (log in, wait for "Options" to appear at the top left)

    3. Click Options (DO NOT CLICK ENGAGE YET!)
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/Stormbow/Star%20Trek%20Online/sound-fix-02.jpg

    4. Type in the "Advanced command line" box: -ignorex64check

    5. Click OK to accept the changes

    6. Click Engage (Start the game)

This is the only resolution that worked for me. Thanks Doug!

I would assume that people using 32 bit systems would run into other problems after using the -ignore64check option, if that did anything for them at all...

Updating drivers didn't work for me, Entering in Ignorex64check in the advanced command line did not work for me. Switching audio from realtek to headset, then relogging, then switching to realtek worked,...for a minute.

The -ignorex64check fix doesn't really seem like a fix. Even as a temporary work around it seems kinda weak. It does fix the sound issue, at least long enough to crash the game. Or that is how it works for me anyways. I really hope either Cryptic fixes this soon or realtek updates their AC 97 drivers, though I don't think it is very likely that realtek will do that. If not I may cancel my preorder. What fun is a game I can't hear, or one that crashes every 10 or 15 minutes.

To give the devs more info:

By default, my system does not get sound either. The "-ignorex64check" does allow me to play with audio, but there is a *large* drop in framerate.

    System info:
    XP-64
    AMD Phenom II 940
    ASUS M4A79 motherboard
    Radeon 4870 1GB

note, the sound chip on the MB is a very bad model. Realtek does not admit to having ever made the ALC1200. ASUS replaced it on their boards quickly. The latest driver is from May 2009. That said, this is the only program I've ever run that did not have audio.

The audio trouble continues with my realtek audio card, but I have placed an order for a new audio card from Newegg and will post whether that is a successful solution in a few days. I have gone back to using the game without audio, because the game now crashes every few minutes instead of 10-15 as before with -ignorex64check activated.

Here are my system specs if it helps; as mentioned in the above post, no other software program I own has had a problem with the realtek audio drivers.

    Windows XP x64
    Nvidia GeForce 6100 motherboard
    AMD x64 3500 + processor
    GeForce 9500 GT video card
    2 GB Ram

(as a side note, my system is running it graphically at full settings without any problems)
