With all of this "matter" nonsense and given that V'Ger was created a thousand years earlier...wouldn't it make more sense for humans to be flying around in clouds, as opposed to sanitary ware?
We are talking a THOUSAND years after Kirk and we're still in ships, even though they've got silly floaty bits?
There's no Stargate-esque assentation, no Q-like development into an omnipotent being, no Changeling evolution, we're not augmented like the Borg...we're biologically identical, but wearing TRIBBLE uniforms and flying around in toilets.
Does anyone else remember when Star Trek made you wish you were living in their future?
A thousand years isn't that much for overall technology in long-running sci-fi series, and they tend to suffer from technological stalling, with Star Wars being one of the worst offenders, even with the new canon.
Allowing that stagnation to creep into Star Trek is a good example of lazy, off the cuff writing, it does not fit the subgenre and in-story established norms well.
Star Wars tech development was supposed to be largely static because they focused on the Force and the natural abilities of the various species instead of pushing science and technological development as hard, hence the manually aimed turrets and whatnot. It was full of thousands of years old references and whatnot right from the beginning.
In ENT, when Archer went to the Enteprise J Daniels alluded to the fact that they could not take him to the bridge because the ship didn't have anything Archer would understand was a bridge. In fact, they apparently took him to the equivalent of a holodeck because Daniels mentioned they had to "build" something Archer could relate to for the meeting/presentation/whatever you want to call it. And the J was only four hundred years in Archer's future, not the thousand-year jump in DSC.
To me it looks like a flying stargate with pointy things. Personally, I don't get the obsession of wanting to see toilet-related innuendo in 32nd century starships in Star Trek: Discovery by certain Star Trek fans. Between diseases and toilets, a lot of Star Trek fans who hate Discovery have their mind in a gutter and are acting very immature.

I myself use "DSC" or "Disco" to describe Discovery rather than... well, you know (it's censored, it seems!), but I will admit my mind went into the toilet (or should we say on it?) on seeing this ship.
The Saturn is actually one of the more reasonable looking ones if they do something to establish exactly why it has that huge time and resource-wasting ring instead of a more compact and needless-extra-hull-avoiding saucer or other efficient solid shape. If it is something like the Horizon where they are doing experiments that need to be confined outside the hull, or a pod-carrying armed freighter (or all of the above) then the design would actually be a good one, but it is a signature of DSC writing style that they very rarely, if ever, give any thought to what function any ship feature should have and why it is formed the way it is.
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.

I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.

When you think that Georgio was basically falling apart, because she was from the Mirror Universe, then moved into the future...Discovery itself could entirely be causing that anomaly. Now, there's a lot of ripping going on here...Stargate SG-1 with entropic cascade failure and of course stealing the Ori ship. That's so funny, because the Ori ship doesn't make me think toilet seat or bidet WHATSOEVER. That was a really clever design, but the Disco rip DOES look like...well, you know. And back to the ripping, Buffy with the side-effects of using magic to bring her back from the dead and creating a demon.
Detached nacelles and all this silly matter aren't nearly enough of a jump technologically. There was also talk of organic hulls, but unless I'm mistaken, we've not seen any of those? If Starfleet was flying around in something like Undine Bioships or Gomtuu, then I'd be very happy. It's the biggest leap into the future Starfleet has ever made...and it feels like the shortest, in technology and civilisation.
It's unoriginal writing to begin with, so I'm not going to be surprised by whatever the cloud turns out to be. And it's like the Trill bit...there's seriously no new invention, so they have to go back to an 800-year old Synth body option?

Neither of those shows created those concepts, and were just ripping off even older works themselves.
And i personally don't see a toilet see in the DSC ship. It looks like a ring, but then again I never saw the "toilet" in the other ship, or w/e people called the Mars call. Seems more to reflect what people want to see in DSC rather then actually what it shows.

The Mars? My initial reaction was a Speculum, but I agree with others that it looks like a Jock Strap. I swear, the "designer" has a bathroom or locker room fixation...or those are the places he gets his "ideas".

No one was calling the Mars class "the toilet", that was the Courage (the one that to "change mode" just flips around while going in the same direction) which does look a bit like an overly fancy commercial pedestal toilet. The Mars class is the one that people were calling the scapula (which is a shoulder blade bone, which it does resemble a bit). If you are going to snark about it then at least get it right.
And no, those resemblances are not just "what people want to see in DSC", they are objective observations on what they are shaped like to many people's eyes. Every time anyone makes any criticism of DSC they are accused of being some kind of wild-eyed luddites nerd raging about "progress" and hating DSC just to hate. There is no high ground on either "side" in this, the sniping is just as bad going in either direction.

I wasn't saying they called the Mars class a toilet, I was saying they called the Courage(whose name I had forgotten) a toilet, and was saying they called the Mars class something as well.
There's nothing "objective" about personal(subjective) interpretations of what things look like. And that is on the person who is seeing it as such, not the actual design of the ship since many people don't see it as such.
I think you know the answer to your own question since the hate for Discovery began before the show even aired. I know, I was here. Four years on and it hasn't shown any sign of stopping. Frankly, everyone here should be the biggest cheerleaders for a new Star Trep IP but prejudice has put up a massive roadblock. I can understand people not liking the show and expressing their opinion a few times, even a year. However now it's just bashing people over the head with your insulting opinions.
I don't get it, to be honest. I mean yeah, these ships are a bit daft looking. I get that. But is the hate directed at them because they're Starfleet ships?
I mean, STO has presented us with some ships that are pretty daft looking too:
No comment:
Oh look - floating parts detached from the main ship:
The Breen ships
The Dewan Pilot Escorts
Lethian pilot escorts
These oddities not only get a free pass, but they're also pretty well regarded in some cases. And, to my eye at least, the 32c ships are no worse than the mentioned ships. So why are those stupid-shaped STO ships acceptable but the 32c ships have to be berated at every opportunity?
shot in the dark but maybe because no one is pretending those odd ship aren't odd looking or that not liking them is a sign of being satan. or maybe because your view of these may or may not be common.
cause thats the thing about opinions you only decide yours, everyone else decides theirs which may, and I understand these days this is shocking, genuinely differ from yours. not because they are evil but because they feel different then you. the thought crime nonsense of daring to not like the new things is dumb and turns people off designs they otherwise just wouldn't pay attention to. see the reaction to older silly designs. never mind strange alien ship being strange is a different thing from pretending strange not alien ship isn't.
personally I'm not seeing much love for the 32c ships from the defenders ether. just hate for people who don't like discovery and don't even start any nonsense "they can't because evil haters exist." we both know that doesn't stop peole from gushing about "unpopular" ships.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

You missed my point.
Fact is, regardless of how odd those older STO ships I referred to may look to some, they never received the level of hatred that the 32c ships get, nor were numerous threads made to bemoan them. I have no feelings about either the odd looking STO ships or the 32c ships myself; neither are of sufficient interest to me that I own the ones I don't particularly like the look of.
Them being Starfleet ships absolutely is a big part of it. There is an iconic look with established in universe design rules to Starfleet ships and because of that even the Defiant remains a hard sell for many people.
As for the childish insults other posters are making. Get over it. People don't have to like what you like. Of all the back and forth discussions about ST: Discovery I've seen, the lions share of prejudice and disrespect has come from one side and one side only, and it wasn't the detractors, which is again on display in this thread.

I was seriously excited for a new show, devastated by the released artwork designs for Discovery itself and mortified by the pilot. I've tried, I've really tried, but Burnham is the most unlikable character in Star Trek I've ever known and it's the Burnham Show.

Since I literally just watched the pilot today I'll give my perspective. I never expected a new Trek series to rival TOS in character likeability. However, Burnham does exhibit the same drive that Kirk had if nothing else. The show is well written, exceptional special effects, and well acted. Is it another Grade A Star Trek series? No. Is it better than 85% of the utter garbage that passes as entertainment on TV nowadays? Absolutely.

Sure. Different shapes and designs often provoke interest and commentary. I never would have thought they'd make matching pieces. What are the chances of that?
I hope you enjoy the watching the series. There's some great episodes. Perhaps you'll end up being a fan?
Besides the Odd ships and 32nd designs...is simply aesthetics, what is pleasing to the eye.
I don't collect lockbox or very alien design, cause I mostly desire Federation with a few the of alliance ships.
But looking at the 32nd 'Future ships'... there is simply no inspirational overall creativity gleam that pleases the eye.
It is simply...dry. And being a photographer for over 16 years, I can say that, without a second rethinking. I have seen and talk to cosplayers who put more effort into details of their costumes, than these artists who are doing the stuff for NuTrek.
And yes, I am very aware of the Discovery being a former design concept that was never used in Trek Lore, from before.
But looking at these ships, if they can be called that. Was created just to fill a spot and nothing more, honestly don't care what name they use to garnish more attention to it.
If it looks are not pleasing...what bother with it? But everyone is deserving on what their preference is...I like ships, I do love the genre of the sci fi kind, and there has been more effort put in those designs that are not Trek, and they stand on their own without much effort mostly.
One design I detest and will not touch...is that Enterprise J.
One design I greatly admire and highly respect, is the new steamrunner, the most cleaniest looking ship ever done, in the updated look.
But none of the Future ships...don't stir the pallet, and it will take a bowl me over ship that does please the eye, to finally say...yeah, that's the one.
I don't get it, to be honest. I mean yeah, these ships are a bit daft looking. I get that. But is the hate directed at them because they're Starfleet ships?

Easy, Star Fleet ships are loved...the random alien of the week ships are just filler. They can look like appliances, and toiletries, and people wouldn't bat an eyelash. But mess with the wonderful ships of the Star Fleet...blasphemy I say!

Well we already got the flying toilet, now we have the flying toilet seat to go with it
I love Discovery, as unpopular as that may be with the angry hateful manbaby crowd, but this ship does kinda look weird.
