The thread about the trailer seems to have gone wildly off topic, so with the first episode airing in a matter of hours I wanted to have a place for people to actually discuss this show and first episode. So...here it is!
Well, I like it quite a bit. The humor is charming and very inside Star Trek, but my wife who got most of her Trek knowledge through "mind-osmosis" (and the occasional endless rant) from me, got it, so it's pretty accessible. And like I stated in the trailer topic, it is very much TNG in style, both visually and in terms of screenplay. It's awesome, so much so that I must say this is where Discovery should have gone in my opinion.โโ
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh
"A filthy, mangy beast, but in its bony breast beat the heart of a warrior" - "faithful" (...) "but ever-ready to follow the call of the wild." - Martok, about a Targ
"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
I didn't expect to enjoy it, but I did. I laughed a bunch of times.
But I can see how alot of Star Trek fans would hate it.
On the pro side it was funny, likable characters, optimistic, sharp crisp art, interesting plot.
Con side if it was any shorter it would be a short trek (its, only 24 minutes, not even a half hour, I mean were there supposed to be commercial breaks in it originally? I mean besides CTV Sci Channel here in Canada). Its going to even more hugely divide the fan based even more, it takes a certain kind of taste to enjoy its humour, which I have, and alot of Star Trek fans aren't fans of a canon Star Trek show parodying Star Trek, it will offend them.

Just finished watching Ep 1, and it is brilliant. Loving the TNG style credits. Loving the uniforms (hope we get them in game) Lots of different characters to get to love. Overall. May it Live Long and Prosper.
Alrighty. So, I wasn't really expecting to like LWD. But I did. A lot actually. I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of Discovery (with the huge exception of Pike and the Enterprise; I am SO excited about SNW!) or Picard, so I wasn't getting my hopes up for LWD. But you know what? It's just plain simple fun. And I now have an urge to play a LWD mobile game or something ๐
I was quite entertained. More than I thought I'd be. Even the opening credits indicated the levity of the show. It was so...Voyager. Almost. Ha! The characters are fun.

Amusingly there is no way to watch the series if you live outside of the US.
Want a taste? watch this:
Not a full plot synopsis, but a nice breakdown.
Yeah, that helps me nothing.. We don't get the new Star Trek over here, we got Discovery eventually but oh my god it was bad.. And from what I've seen of Picard.. It's not looking up, which is a shame cause TNG was my favourite.
Linking me that is like telling me.. Oh hey, you can watch the trailers or reviews.. But you can't watch the full thing.

If you are in Canada, it is available on CTV SciFi which is formerly known as Space: The Imagination Station. The first episode is currently available on its website for free, but I believe it is region locked. Other countries might have other methods of watching it. Then there is other methods of viewing it like using Bit Torrent.

Those other methods are illegal, so. No.
When they don't make it available, I won't shed a tear or feel guilty if those methods are used.
As for the story, I've yet to see it. Thought it LEAST it LOOKS like Trek, unlike the last two series.

Even though the episodes are half the length of a TNG episode it follows the format almost exactly. Classic flyby intro with humorous twist and instruemntal music, TNG fonts, episodic format with an A and B plot (in this case classic split between planet and ship), remarkably well translated, animated TNG aesthetics and sfx. It really is well crafted, although one has to like the animation style itself (I guess you could call it Rick and Morty-esque, which isn't my favourite but it works).โโ

Yep. A thing I try to put into my comics.
As for this show, I was highly disappointed by TRIBBLE and Picard...so my hopes were sorta...well....non there. But this show gave me a smile, and did not feel sad or ashamed after. So, Lower Decks is fine by me...double that Kurtzman had very little to nothing to do with this.
Rick and Morty have a lot cruder look, Lower Decks is a bit more polished.
And NO damned Discovery shuttles crammed in here!!!!!

Which is why it is extremely idiotic that streaming services are region locked. If I can watch Lower Decks for free as a Canadian, then people in other countries should be able to watch for free as well. Not sure what your stance is on VPNs, but that is another possibility and doesn't require using illegal websites or Bit Torrent.
Can we keep this thread about the actual show, please? Yes, I know you are talking about how the show is available but that same thing goes for Discovery and Picard and all future new Trek shows. So that is a separate topic IMO, and doesn't need to be re-hashed in every single discussion about a new Trek show.
I quite liked it. I particularly enjoyed the fact that while it uses a TNG-style A-plot, B-plot structure, in keeping with the focus of the show on the "least important" people aboard the A-plot was what would have mostly happened offscreen on TNG, while the B-plot would have been the TNG A-plot (and, as indicated in the Captain's Log at the end, the bridge crew would have gotten all the credit for solving the problem, no matter who did the actual work).
Another nice touch was with the cybernetic implant in Rutherford's head; since it was made on Vulcan, the ear on that side is pointed, and it wants to suppress his emotional responses (a setting he's frequently trying to adjust). And when he's distracted from his date kissing him by a malfunction in the door mechanism, you might at first assume it's the implant - but it's not, he's just that big a tech nerd ("How can you think about anything else when there's a Level 2 diagnostic just waiting to be done?"). I also liked the fact that the artificial eye has a pupil - rendered in 8-bit.
Basically lots of attention to detail, clear characterization, interesting background tidbits about them, and I liked the trivia bit at the end when Mariner has declared herself Bohmer's mentor, and is running through a checklist of Starfleet heroes he might want to be like.
M: "...or Sulu? The sword guy? You could be our next sword guy? Or Gary Mitchell? You ever heard of him?"
B: "I could... look him up!"
M: "You won't have to, 'cause I'm your mentor now!"
As I have posted in the thread about the show's ship, did you catch that in the intro cinematic the hero ship is actually turning around and running from a battle? It's excellent โโ

Yep. "They haven't noticed us - let's get the hell out while the getting's good!"
Yeah, it's nice to have a new Trek show that isn't taking itself too seriously for a change. And I don't just mean the fact that it's a comedy. Trek has typically been about a single ship on it's own adventure, but until Lower Decks both new Trek shows have been OMG THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE IS GOING TO END IF WE DON'T SAVE IT. That's ok every now and then for an episode or 2(which previous Trek shows did), but it's not a good constant theme for an entire season or series IMO. So yeah, it's nice to just have fun again
Yeah CBS has a winner with this one. I fully expect this one to be the first one to be canceled however...because this one is the winner of the bunch.
I get the implied joke/sarcasm (stupid CBS, they'll make what's bad and cancel what's good). But the simple fact is whether it's "good" doesn't actually matter to them (as far as canceling/renewing). What matters is viewership/subscriptions. So if a show performs well they won't cancel it.

and when they hit the asteroids or whatever it was...lol
Obviously it is far too early too judge a series based solely on one episode, but first impressions are hard to overcome.
Personally, I liked Lower Decks. It showed a lot more heart and realism than the Star Trek we recently had. Ensign Mariner was willing to disobey orders to help a couple of farmers that she met on her previous mission to the planet. The Cerritos seems more like a crew that is trying to do their job and stay safe rather than being the hero. However, part of that opinion is due to the opening credits with the Romulans and Borg.
I stopped caring about Rotten Tomatoes after they started awarding poor ratings, based on "user reviews", for movies and TV programs that hadn't even been released yet. It seems clear their "ratings" are driven by the sort of people who never get off their keyboards long enough to actually, y'know, watch the media they're "critiquing".

It's not just about the critical side, Jon. There are keyboard activists on both 'sides' trying to manipulate the scores of movies they agree or disagree with. While one group is trying to drive down a score, the other is trying to inflate it. But yes, RT has become essentially worthless now for that reason.
