So they create a really effective Starship and decide to hold back on its production because....?
Speculation: Because it's a highly specialized design. It'd be easiest to put 25th century tech into a frame designed with it in mind from the ground up. So the rate of production of 25th century designs would be a lot higher than this 23rd century one. Given the last two galaxy spanning conflicts, they need to churn out more ships rather than more powerful ships.

You know that if they announce that Anson Mount and/or Rebecca Rojmin will be doing a 'special' Episode with the Discovery Enterprise, you can bet that an Infomercial Episode is here to shows us around the ship for the to be released Bridge Pack.

In regards to the general discontent over these "box ships"...
I don't "like" the connie being in the box. I understand it, I have come to accept it, and I actually have 3 (2 TLCs, 1 Kelvin and am about to have the discoprise). So, my "issue" doesn't come from a place of jealously or envy, because I personally have what I want.
But yes, I also understand how "it sucks" for people new to the game who don't have an army of alts for grinding. Those people aren't wrong to feel that way, and they aren't wrong to feel turned off. It's not a great situation, but it's one I've learned to "deal with". But if someone else isn't ok with it, that's ok too.
Having said all of that, I do think they really need to figure out how to handle this issue in a better way or someone else is going to handle it for them. It might not be that guy, but someone will. And sometimes it's better if you are the one controlling the change instead of having it forced on you.
I don't like that it's yet another 'lootbox' but I probably wouldn't stick with the ship once I'd unlocked the trait-I'd-hardly-use anyway & that's really just a waste of money for me.
Now, if they put X-Bomber in the game, I'd snap that right up!
Whaddaya mean it's the wrong Star Fleet ?

Well said.
I don't really begrudge anyone who seriously wants to acquire this ship (or any promo/box ship) but I do find the practice predatory and abusing the player/dev relationship to the extreme.
They know there are players who cannot control their urges to drop cash into the game. I accept they need an income to pay the bills but they are quite clearly taking advantage of a situation where they know there is a portion of a community who have little impulse control; especially over financial matters.
If you feel genuinely happy paying for such an item in any game, that's good for you but I think everyone needs to be fully aware this practice of acquiring ships is not being done for any reason other than greed to take advantage of people's wishes to own something desirable.
Cryptic DO need to address this elephant in the room. Lootbox mechanics are getting serious attention now. This is only gonna get more bitter the more game companies push their players.
The company needs to be the change, or like you said...someone else is going to come along and it'll be taken out of the devs' hands.
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

I really think there should be a max spend amount on things like this. 1 idea i had a while ago was that for every $10 purchase of Zen you get 1 Zen purchase token. Then when you have say 15 of these they can be used for a ship that is normally locked away behind a lockbox / research box. This way it is tied directly to purchasing of zen (and not by earning free zen in game).
The ship will still be packaged in a box that you can put on the exchange as well letting other purchase it for EC. Current "event project queue" could be used for this.

I'd be fine with some system like this, if they could find a fair balance.

I think it's fair as people can still buy lock box keys / research packs and try their luck, people that don't want to spend money can still trade dilithium for zen to purchase keys and sell them on the exchange for EC to get funds together to buy the ship. Just means if someone really wants the ship they can spend money upfront or over time and know they will get it.
Maybe set it that you can only buy the ship once per character and if that person sells its on the exchange then they then have enough EC to buy 1 or 2 other ships from older lock boxes they are after.
Let's face it $150 can buy a good number of other games these days so i think the $150 (15 tokens) is a fair price for only 1 ship. I know myself i would be a lot less bitter knowing that I will get the ship i want if it was at a max fix price.
so...apparently devs have the ability to spawn unkillable test dummies at will...yet players STILL don't have anything like this in an empty map to test builds on despite having repeatedly asked for it for YEARS now?

Eh, anyone who's surprised or upset this is an R&D lottery ship hasn't been here long enough. Stick around; it's a lot like watching your favorite three episodes again and again.
Also, how smart do you have to be to disable playback of your own video on your own website?..
I'm really on the fence about this one. Not the moral ramifications, I agree with most posters about them. I already have THE Constitution class and have mixed and matched all the ships parts to make the Phase II Enterprise that I could never convince Cryptic to produce. This Discoprise will be stuck as a one off like the JJprise so no customization.

With these ships being called flight deck but having two bays does this mean other flight decks are going to be upped to two with carriers getting a third or is this just another piece of nonsense gamblebox ship carrot to dangle while throwing definitions of ship categories out the airlock?

We'll see.. but the way it's currently explained is that from an AI perspective each squadron counts as 1 pet (they all use the same AI) so it sounds like this ship shouldn't be anymore lag intensive then any other carrier. Of course, we'll see how it works in actual practice.

I was wondering about that myself, but then I remembered that this is Cryptic and their ship classifications mean absolutely nothing. Apparently 'flight deck cruiser' will be a new term like 'Dreadnought,' just something to slap on a ship arbitrarily to try and make it sound 'cool' and sell more.

Different flavour of ridiculous compared to joining the breach event when the universal pizza cutters got added to the game.
Being fighters they will be squishy so might not be as effective a mini fleet as the jem carrier although it looks like the inept ai is being offset by giving them beams over cannons so they should get a few hits in before dancing into core breaches.
