I agree.
TRIBBLE is CBS flagship show for CBS All Access at the moment (unless that has changed), they are going to use STO as a marketing tool for it.
If it is helping the franchise to make more money, why shouldn't they?
Putting content behind a paywall doesn't work with Cryptic's business model. In CO, there are three Adventure Packs that, when introduced, needed to be purchased (except for Gold subscribers, who got them free). They were mildly popular when introduced, but not exactly heavily used, because it turns out that when your business model is to offer your product for free with microtransactions, new content is not regarded by your audience as a proper subject for said microtransactions.
All those Adventure Packs are still in the game, of course, but now they're free - and much more popular. (I for one try to run at least the first section of Whiteout with every new toon, because one of the rewards is an UNTIL Soldier temporary Sidekick.)
One of the lessons Cryptic learned from this is that putting new content behind paywalls is not going to succeed.
Look, folks, it's simple. You don't like the new content? Don't play the new content. That's how those who disliked the Romulan Republic handled LoR, that's how people who didn't want film-grain in their game handled AoY, and that's what you should do if you have some deep-seated objection to the very existence of AoD. (If you object to the existence of the television show Star Trek: Discovery, well, sorry, don't know what can be done for you. CBS isn't going to cancel it just to make you happy, though.)
Not really, and for various reasons other than not being a fan of discovery.
I mean really does the Federation need a third starting experience, the second starting experience that will end up being just a few missions than integrate back into the 25th century?
Instead this could have been more episodes for the Dominion arc...or more episodes for a new arc, instead its pointless missions that will only benefit one faction.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
QoL stuff is not dependant on a total stop to making things for the rest of the game. That would be the equivelent of stopping ALL progress on content to focus on bug fixing for an entire season. Its not financially viable for a company as small as Cryptic. Blizzard might be able to get away with it, but they don't add content as quickly as we get it here.
Content pays the bills honestly.
Also... no one said we were abandoning the Gamma Quadrant in favor of Discovery content. We're gonna get more stuff. We have a whole new quadrant to explore and have stories in. We're pretty much guaranteed future Gamma Quad content. We've got several named characters and ships working in Gamma post Home. We'll see them again.
Except where have there ever been any real quality of life improvements? Most are promises never delivered on...or reverted because they're afraid of people who complain because they wont be as OP as they were.
May I ask you what you think happened to the Delta Quadrant? So many loose ends and never to be expanded upon at all...what makes you think the Gamma Quadrant would be any better?

Incorrect. Cryptic has already said that the only exclusive thing for new characters is the tutorial, all the missions are cross-faction.
Also, its hard to add more episodes for the Dominion arc when its already over, and there wouldn't be much to do anyways.
May I ask you what you think happened to the Delta Quadrant? So many loose ends and never to be expanded upon at all...what makes you think the Gamma Quadrant would be any better?
What loose ends?
-The Undine learned the Iconians were tricking them, and went back to Fluidic space to honor the deal they made with Janeway back in Voyager.
-The Bluegill infestation was stopped, the hive raided, and the Queen was killed.
-The leader of the Vaadwaur, Gaul, was killed, and Eldix took over and ended hostilities between them and the other races of the DQ.
-The Borg's attempts to rebuild the Collective via re-assimilating Cooperative ships was stopped, leaving them crippled.
-The Kobali started to move to making their form of resurrection a choice, rather then forcing it on all the dead bodies they encountered after the whole Harry Kim thing.
-The Tuterians attempts at revenge via temporal manipulations were stopped.
-We left behind a strong alliance consisting of the Borg Cooperative, the Turei, Hazari, Benthans, Kobali, Overlookers, Krenim, the Mawasi, the Nihydron and the Zahl Regnancy, along with some Kazon sects, a few Hirogen clans, and support from Talaxians, Ocampa, and Octanti.
Still another pointless tutorial that isn't needed...why in gods name does one faction need 3 different tutorials?
The Undine...theyjust disappeared? We know they're vengeful...just look what they did to the Borg for encroaching into their space.
The Voth...I guess they just stopped caring about Omega and all? All of their ships went into cloak and were never heard from again?
The Iconians...the power they were and now they're just a single fleet? T'ket was so angry and vengeful and now just decides to hang around doing nothing.
Plus why do you think the dominion arc was wrapped up so quickly...so they can work on this TRIBBLE junk...the show that wants to defile and defecate all over canon...
And why are they doing that? CBS is so desperate to hock any product they can...probably because it isn't doing as well as they claim, because this year they don't have Netflix covering the bill...so they've been busy selling themselves like a cheap hooker making any product they can and slapping the Star Trek name on it. They need to make bank to actually pay for season 2

It can easily work. Cryptic has a very similar format to Turbine. The same company behind LOTRO and DDO(that other Dungeons&Dragons MMO). Just like LOTRO/DDO, you can earn the currency for microtransactions in game.
Perhaps the business model of Cryptic is going to change/evolve with this new step in the relationship w/ CBS.
There is one thing I am grateful for, regarding Discovery. But only one. Discovery gave STO the sensor/emitter/integrity-linked beam weapons for disruptors and phasers. Unfortunately, no plasma or other types yet. But at least I get to have my blue dakka finally.
som? hey, are you feeling alright? you actually said something i agree with, are you being taken over by a bluegill? blink once if you're still in there...
Its the exception that proves the rule Pat, nothing more.
just as long as you're not going soft in the head on me, I actually enjoy our little arguments from time to time.
My concern isn't so much whether Klingorks are coming into the game(I pretty much play aliengen races exclusively).
My concerns are these: Will there be new weapon visuals(pulse-dakka plasma weapons and that of the other flavors for beam styles)? It's one of the reasons why Vaadwaur Polaron is one of my favorite weapon choices, same with the linked phasers/disruptors. Will the TRIBBLE story stuff be in lockstep with that of the showrunners/writers? The whole "We're Team Blue! We voted a specific way, and so will you! And if you don't, you're wrong!" being thrust upon characters through dialogue, regardless of faction choice is a concern. Will the TRIBBLE episodes be a continuation of the Mary Sue Burnham adventures?
Because it could blow up in their faces a la The Last Jedi and Solo.
While Solo objectively bombed, The Last Jedi was the highest grossing movie of 2017, the seventh highest grossing movie ever in North America, and the 9th highest grossing movie of all time.
The only thing that blew up was the reaction from the same small group of fans who have been bitter ever since Disney scrapped the abysmally unwieldy Star wars expanded universe.
Do you think that Solo bombed because of the backlash that TLJ raised with how the movie put things along? The movie tickets for TLJ sold extremely well. After the movie ends though, do you have a guestimate on the percentage of those movie-goers clamoring for toys, action figures, clothing apparel, and other merch? But how about the Ma-Rey Sue merchandise? Is that selling at a break-neck pace? Or the people in charge of TLJ ripping into fans of Star Wars for voicing their displeasure?

It is ranked as one of the worst Star Wars movies on IMBD (only The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones are worse) and Rotten Tomatoes which reflects what the fans think.
Just because a movie or any product makes a lot of money, does not mean it is quality or that it will keep its fanbase.
McDonalds makes billions off their food, that doesn't make it quality. Same can be said for any product. If the amount of money a product generates is a measure of its quality then cheeseburgers and French Fries should be the healthiest food on the planet.
As for the hate (and in this case it is hate) against SW:TLJ, it appears to be far more than some small group of people who were mad about the extended universe being scrapped. There are a lot of fans of SW:TFA that hated SW:TLJ because it was disjointed and Rian Johnson's story does not fit well (in their opinion) with JJ-Abrams' SW:TFA. I dislike Star Wars in general (and always have), so I don't have a proverbial dog in that hunt and was just using Star Wars as an example of what can happen if a fanbase becomes irate with the official material a corporation creates.
If you don't like the Discovery content, don't play it. But Cryptic isn't going to doom their entire project before it even begins just to make you happy.

Not likely. Cryptic tried this once with Champions. New maps were locked behind a paywall, and there was community backlash of epic proportions.
But hey... I have been arguing for the longest time that we should be paying for playable content with all the fluff rolled in with it on the grounds that if that was what made them money, it would be incentivized and prioritized for development and deployment, but instead we pay for fluff on a regular basis, with playable content only being added semi-regularly. We buy fluff that essentially lets us do the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over and.... ARGH! To me, it is more logical to pay for new stuff to do regularly. But because Cryptic made the arbitrary decision that mission content would never be monetized, we have a community composed mainly of an "I want everything free" mindset. So every time someone suggests paying for new content, "I'll quit" threats start flying left and right.
So no... locking Discovery, or any playable content behind a paywall won't fly with STO, because of the precedent Cryptic has established by not doing so since STO went free to play. to change now would be marketing suicide. However, keeping Discovery-era content, aside from what they have already released, separated from from the 25th century era, is all I would want them to do. I mean, they have already implied that there will be discovery-era specific content being produced long term, which kind of goes against the established mold. We don't get continuing Romulan, Klingon or classic 23rd century content beyond the introductory stuff. And that's fine, because with the direction they have taken the game to this point, the different "Factions" are really just different origin stories explaining how our characters got from there to here. But it won't make sense for the discovery expansion to do the same thing. Greatv paisn are being taken to create a discovery era experience, and because the series itself is in live run, its STO parallel content will be as well. And that won't fit with the current mold for the 25th century era that is the core of STO. So it should be kept apart.
My biggest fear is that with the focus on Discovery-specific content, the 25th-century core game will take a back seat...
I kind of feel like that there's going to be an initial push with Discovery content, then it's going to be revisited as time moves forward. I think we'll find out more at least from the panel this weekend on Season 15: Age of Discovery.
