Black Alert is rather underwhelming.

It sounds really cool on paper, but in reality the Crossfield's Black Alert trait is pretty bad.
The damage dealt by it is hardly even worth mentioning. Now maybe if it worked like a full on Torped Spread III, able to hit more targets with more torpedoes in a grouping it could be useful, but as is its pretty worthless.

Sad to hear, for what's supposed to be the hero ship of the new canon(tm) star trek.

I'm all for balance, but keeping so many abilities, traits, consoles so totally and completely gimped and self-nerfing doesn't provide for fun selection, only right and wrong choices when facing these punching bag NPCs with millions of hit points on tight timers.

Well... for a Science Captain it might be interesting. Think about it. Combine Black Alert with Photo Fleet and the Command Frequency trait from the Command Tree... you got yourself a temporary mini fleet.

Honestly, I think it's mostly just to tack those extra bites into an enemy. Same as things like the Subspatial Warheads or Kemocyte-Laced weapons. Nothing super deadly, but it adds those little bites of hurt that can stack up

But the fun is in combining it with other abilities in creative ways.

Not really, all it really does is spawn a couple of extra torpedoes a few times which aren't even that strong and g et nullified by shields. Game mechanic wise the ship is literally nothing but VFX. There literally is no reason to slot this trait other than for perhaps space barbie.

Maybe if the torpedoes they launched had 100% shield penetration it would be worth something.

Or maybe more strategic instances. If you have a shield ripping build, those torps would hit bare hull.

Does it use your torpedoes that you have armed or just it's own?

Because if it's your own maybe Tricolbalt torps would make it more interesting.

Like I said, literally no reason to slot it. There are far better traits to use for those kind of builds. Even the torpedo volley from the Mycelium Ambush console does much more noticeable, and actually useful damage. Actually if the Black Alert torpedoes work just like that, it may actually be useful, but not as it stands now.

It uses its own fixed damage value.

    That's sad. I agree.
And i also agree about torpedo with 100% penetration could be a good solution.

Adding a confuse or threat generation function would be useful too. Nice-looking skill and had to be interesting to code, shouldn't be completely useless.

Are the torpedoes boosted by torpedo damage boosts? Perhaps if you try it on a torpedo build they will hit harder?

It looked pretty gimmicky from the description.

Negative, not modified by torpedo damage boosts. Technically not even torpedoes, it just states the duplicates appear and deal X amount of damage before vanishing.

the point of it is to spin the wheel!

I can't imagine who would have bought the Crossfield Class for Black Alert. The ship itself is beyond excellent as a very tactically powerful and survivable full science ship. Black Alert however is very underwhelming, to be polite as possible, and could definitely use a boost just as well as Honored Dead had its wings clipped.

Kind of ironic really. Black Alert is extremely underwhelming while Honored Dead was extremely overpowered. :P

Yeah, Black Alert needs some love, and Honored Dead is still excellent post-nerf.

In that case I wonder if things like damage boost to summon allies will work?

I still think it would be cool to use combined with other things.

Hell... someone was actually wondering what would happen if you use Black Alert alongside the Mobius' console. Throw in a Sci Captain's Photo Fleet and a Fleet Support... you got your own little temp fleet.

Useless for number crunchers maybe. But it would be a fun trait to play with regardless.

What fleet? it blinks in for one second, if even that, and then blinks out. It's literally blink and you will miss it.

Mobius console summons a past and future version of your ship. Photo Fleet summons 3 holographic ships. Fleet Support summons a Cruiser, while some of the upgraded ones summon a cruiser and a frigate. Short it may be... add in Black Alert, you've got upwards of Nine ships around you at once depending on traits and gear. Duration may not be as long, but still... that's a lot. And as I said, would be fun to play with.

No, it summons a duplicate of just your ship and hangs around for 1 second and deals some insignificant damage up to 4 times in a row. That's all it does.

That is a lot of work when you could just play a carrier ship and have 10 ships out constantly. I have 5 frigates, 1 cruiser, 4 drones most of the time on my Carrier.

    Isn't this usually the case?

People seen something on screen that looks spectacular, get it in their game, and really look forward to it, and then it turns out rather "meh"?

Actually I was rather surprised to see that you were the one posting this?
