I've been trying to decide if it would be worth getting the Crossfield Class, for the "Black Alert" Trait...it certainly sounds interested, but it's a lot of money for something that I can't even see in action. I saw on YouTube that people have already unlocked it, but I can't see a video of anyone using it or feedback.
Does anyone have an opinion?
Oh and also...is the Walker Class work it for the Obfuscation Screen Universal Console? I've seen the videos of that, but has anyone played with it themselves?
I'll give the answer to this as a blanket: no, just for simple economics. The price of the ship factors demand across all dimensions. People are buying it for additional reasons to the ship trait. So by necessity, it must be overvalued if all you're interested in is the trait or console.
That doesn't touch on this stuff's subjective value, but that's not a question we can answer for you.
KDF-aligned species can pick the traits and consoles up for considerably less (there's the usual cross-faction pack, which for the Crossfield comes as a prize in the lock box. Walker's trait [being lobi store only] is considerably more expensive.) and while that might not be ideal for your character setup it'll certainly be the most cost effective.

Oh, but if only you could test a ship you don't have...I'd have to buy it, character transfer and if I decide I don't like it, the price will have unfortunately dropped before I can put it back on the exchange.
So black alert duplicates both you ship and your pets?
No, it summons a duplicate of just your ship and hangs around for 1 second and deals some insignificant damage up to 4 times in a row. That's all it does.
So, in only just 1 second the ship can fire 4 times?? ow. I dont care about the trait, but i will love to see that lol. Must be really funny. But honestly, only 1 second and the ship dissapears??? whats the point on that??? completely ridiculous hahaha.
No, the ship appears up to 4 times, and only fires once each time it appears.
But yeah, its pretty stupid. At the very least it should fire the 3x torpedo salvo that the Mycelium Ambush console does, because it actually does a noticeable amount of damage.

Tagging on to what was already said, see this thread on feedback. Also grab it on your KDF to test, it's dirt cheap at the moment, which already says something about its practical value.
I happen to care about the ship because it is science, faction-specific instead of more alien cryptic stuff, is canon (even if I don't consider ST-D Star Trek, at least it appears somewhere other than STO), and stats check out even if isn't as good as my other alien sci dreads - just not at the current market values, so will wait till it becomes another lockbox choice pack.
Bought this Trait off the Exchange for my KDF chars. Like the majority of Ship Traits, Black Alert isn't the One Thing Which Rules Them All. Transphasic Torpedoes are portrayed in ST:VOY as some sort of superweapon which are damn near a Plot Device they are so effective. In STO they are way down on anyone's list of an alternative torpedo. This one is the same thing but different. Black Alert is a nifty add to my "Ohcrap! Gotta MOVE! NAOW!" list of Ship Traits. But I'm not building a whole ship around it and using it as to save myself from my bad piloting or poor tactical choices.
The Crossfield is another matter entirely. While it has Black Alert, I tend to not use the chrome bits in builds unless I have a very specific use for them and they also provide benefit somewhere else. My bank is nearly full of Cheese Consoles which happily sit there and do nothing at all. Because there are consoles and weapons which perform better and are not one trick ponies. I probably will try for the ship. Whether or not I will use Black Alert with it remains to be seen.
tl;dr version. If you want the ship because you like the whole ship, get it. If you want the ship only because of Black Alert, don't get it.

Well... for a Science Captain it might be interesting. Think about it. Combine Black Alert with Photo Fleet and the Command Frequency trait from the Command Tree... you got yourself a temporary mini fleet.
Did exactly this with my Rommie Eng and the Delta Reinforcements item. Worked out nicely. But I was not expecting Black Alert to be an "I Win!" clicky either. No amount of space magic can save me from bad piloting or poor tactical choices. TBH, I wouldn't want it to, either.
On a related note, I picked up the Honored Dead Trait off the Exchange for my two Feds the day before it got corrected. I noticed little if any difference before and after. It is a passive ability however. I may simply have not been paying close enough attention. I like Honored Dead. It is useful for those occasions when I turn left instead of right and wind up smack in the middle of the furball after aggro'ing everything on the map. I still get shot up with half the crew in EV suits throwing patches all over the outside hull, but I'm not nearly as shot up as I could be.

Having just found out how cheap this is on KDF I have been testing and you can boost it with +projectile damage. Not got any +torp damage to test with but so far with my limited gear I boosted the torpedo damage to 5k.
As someone who bought the Crossfield Class, I certainly didn't expect Black Alert to be a "Sword of 1000 Truths" I-Win Button, but I expected it to do something meaningful, as opposed to being utterly worthless. It looks cool, but it does absolutely no damage at all, it's one of those garbage traits you'd quite literally never choose to slot over any other choice.
Maybe the Devs designed it/envisioned it to be used differently than players use it?
I thought it'd be fun to use Surgical Strikes to trigger both Black Alert and Energy Web, but Black Alert doesn't do anything besides look cool. It certainly DOES look cool, but I'd like it to do something besides look pretty and waste a precious Ship Trait slot.
Honored Dead is an incredible anti-vape PVP trait, even after its nerf, so that's where you'd see it shine for how good it is. It's a very effective counter for Cold Hearted if you're set up for tanking and hull regen.
@borticuscryptic, Are you the right person to ask about looking at Black Alert? It seems to do nothing besides look pretty. Is it working as intended as being basically like a Party Amplifer/Anniversary Party Popper flavor/fun kind of thing, or was it intended to be useful? Are we players not understanding how you Devs intended it to work effectively?
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am."
It is however very fun, suddenly seeing a duplicate of your ship DASHing in and firing some torpedoes to disappear again.
I am using a Torpedo / Exotic damage build, (with Quantum Phase Torpedoes to get through shields faster) of course, so I woudn't say it's useless, but it's probably more on the gimmicky side of abilities.
I am trying to remember what other consoles or traits let you create duplicates of your ships... There is a console from the Temporal Ships that I use on another character for the Annorax, but what else? The Nova Refit console perhaps? What else?

I use the same type of build, and from my parsing Black Alert is literally useless, the extra damage is completely inconsequential with a lockout of 25 seconds.

Simple argument? Balance, and not being too "pay to win". If they gave C-Store or Lobi ships OP traits, then it would 1) force a meta, and 2) raise accusations of pay to win

It's what Cryptic does. How many of the special consoles does anyone really use if they are serious about getting the most out of their ships? Probably why they turned the C-store off on Tribble years ago. A lot of the powers sound good, but then you try it and it's meh.

There are a couple of em. For example, i can say for sure that the spinal cannons of the Matha raptor is probably one of the most useful gimmicks in the game because it actually does A LOT of damage. But other similar gimmicks, are completely useless. The bortasqu autocannon, god, what a stupid and pointless ability and its basically the same as the spinal cannons in terms of design. But regular Spinal lances are completely useless in this game, for example as well. They deal so low damage and they miss like hell. Why??? i just dont get it lol. And this about attack and offensive gimmicks, dont let me start with others...
That's more a consequence of power creep though. Back in the day spinal lances and the Bortasqu's autocannon were absolutely amazing. But these days there is just so much damage flying around and so many defensive abilities that they simply haven't kept up.
But releasing new traits and consoles that are basically Dead on Arrival, now that's a real problem.

Power creep is fun, when done gradually and fairly to all classes and factions.
As far as useful lockbox ship consoles, the console set from the Undiscovered lockbox is excellent, but the idea of universal consoles from lockboxes is kind of new, so you're not really asking a fair question: C-store and lockbox consoles were always locked to ship classes, or ships from the same alien race.

I normally wouldn't for a Trait either...but this one, it says on the tin, creates two versions of yourself (like pets) that fire torpedo spread.
