We've had that discussion already. Copying over part of an already implemented function isn't hard. Hell, even re-implementing it wouldn't be, compared to what else they code regularly.
Except that it is mucking with a different set of variables that aren't meant to work with that software function.

We've also had the real-world discussion of Cryptic coding, Soph. Do I need to remind you again of how the addition of vehicles to a completely different game crashed the chat server for two weeks, even though that system shouldn't even be connected to anything that has to do with graphics?
The vehicles and chat server thing.... My guess is that it has to do with how virtually EVERYTHING you do creates a chat log message. If the chat server doesn't understand the messages it's getting when people activate vehicles...
Or when the Wild Hunt event was introduced in CO, which crashed the entire Desert zone, and how that was somehow solved by deleting all the coyotes near Greenskin Base, even though they didn't interact with anything?
I'm thinking that wasn't a proper fix but a kludge that happened to work and may not have fixed the actual problem. What was Wild Hunt again?

Yeah, debugging is Fun. And debugging an MMO is even more !!!Fun!!! since you can't always test how thousands of players doing things at once works out, without having the thousands of players do it live.

The time something takes to fix tends to correlate with the unlikelyness of the problem. If it's something obvious it can usually be fixed fast, but if it's something weird like coyotes in the chat server, that's gonna take some more searching. :D

"Lots of rally(sic) smart people with lots of coding experience in the 21st century here"

You sound like the kind of person who hasn't worked with a game more complex than something you make in Scratch. Do you honestly think that you know more than the people who spent their lives going through rigorous schooling to build an entire game engine from the ground up, just because you can say the rudimentary idea in 10 words or less?

Here's a brain scratcher for you: Why don't they just do it? If it is so absolutely simple as to only be a matter of "lolz edit numbers done!" then why don't the devs of the game, who know infinitely more about the game engine and servers than you or me, and who are almost constantly bombarded with the same exact question of "Bridge ship piloting when?" just put it in? Why would they bother coming up with excuses when, according to you, it's as simple as clicking a notepad and editing a number?

This new feature talk is getting old. Can one of the Devs once and for all let it out to the community?

what new feature talk? I just see a ton of bitching about weather a bar is a feature or how simple/impossible the unwanted/unneeded feature of pilotin from a bridge is

    What was Wild Hunt again?
An addition to the Blood Moon event, with werewolves and hunters fighting in the Desert (and apparently in Canada, but I've never run across them). I participated once, just long enough to get the Silver Bullet emblem, and haven't touched it since. For some reason, when it first came in it reduced the entire Desert region to about 3 or 4 fps, except when it crashed out entirely. The devs went over everything having to do with that portion of the code, even changing it so that previous interactions with coyote packs in the Desert no longer occurred. Then, apparently as a desperation move, someone deleted all the coyote mobs anywhere near Greenskin Base, at the extreme southern portion of the map. Suddenly the problem disappeared.

Software glitches can be fun - I've also rattled on before about the one that happened just before I was assigned to HQ SAC, when someone's new targeting software was run against the live database and reassigned all weapons to zero degrees latitude, zero degrees longitude. If the balloon had gone up during a three-month period in the early '80s, we would have bombed the frak out of a spot in the Atlantic just west of Equitorial Guinea.

Oh, that mini-event is called BITE! now. BITE! mobs have weird behavior. The werewolf hunters will sometimes attack enemies but the enemies will ignore them. I once spent about 20 minutes waiting for people to assemble to fight Dino watching some of the hunters try to kill Dino. Each time she walked past they'd chip off a few thousand of her millions of HP. Maybe if they'd had an day or two they could have finished the job.

I wonder if maybe the glitch had to do with the way the hunters interacted with the coyotes? IE the game kept doing checks constantly that it really didn't need to be doing.

Totally different thing. Phoenix Boxes have some VERY nice things (Event ships for the souls who missed them, Unique Doffs, Emotes, and of course, the tech uprgrades~)

well based on the files on the pc... it would be moving on to 64bit. meaning more memory, so better visuals and effects, larger & more complex player maps... wonder if it's optional or forced migration to 64 bit. some folks still using old 32bit OS. PW would probably know the numbers of who would be affected.

Steam stats are not applicable, as that represents maybe only 1/3 of the total population. There are still people running the stand alone somehow, and others running it through Arc. Why Steam stats seem to be the end all stat for arguments and discussions... I don't know.

I mean... I've seen instances of people saying "The game is dying! I have the Steam stats to prove it!"

Anyways... back on topic... Geko said it was a "requested" feature. I seriously doubt its a migration to a 64 bit client. There were still quite a few players who were on Windows XP when they upped the system requirements out of Win XP. No one requested that.

My ECs are on something in game that people have been wanting. Brand new Exploration system, Gamma Quad access... playable Cardassians... itcould be any number of things that people have been begging for honestly. Me? I'm still holding out for a Pet Tab, however small that feature may be.

The fact is we don't know. Everything we have now is mere speculation. We DO know that we had a new expansion teased for summer 2018. Expansions usually mean lots of new stuff incoming. New content, new ships... My guess is that we'll start seeing this "new feature" at or around the time Victory is Life, or whatever they title the new expansion, is launched. Will we find out more via Tribble Testing? Perhaps. But we won't know for certain until we get closer and closer to the release of either said feature or said expansion.

They are though. Steam represents the single greatest userbase of PC gamers. Even companies who don't put their games on Steam use Steam's hardware survey because there is no greater database of PC gamer hardware.
Hmm... is it comprehensive? not in the slightest! is every other option worse? yep!

It's not a feature at all. It's not something they'd advertize, in fact the only people who would would even notice them releasing a 64bit client are tech geeks and the people who would inevitably have problems with it.

And yeah, nobody has requested it. The first and only time I heard of the topic even discussed was that paranoid thread a while back suspecting they were removing the Foundry because of it. Typical player doesn't even know what it means, just "bigger numbers are better."

Maybe. They could still release a half-season before that which could include new features.

I am curious if he will ever explain exactly which feature the tweet was referring to, though. Or will we have a big guess-a-thon when something comes out what was the feature everyone will love...

But like I said, one thing I'm sure of, everyone will not love it no matter what it is. Someone always complains.

  • tigerariestigeraries Member Posts: 3,492 Arc User
to say no one has requested it? umm i've asked for a 64bit client... so have others who have requested it in the tech forums... sorry but being limited to 4 gigs of memory use is restrictive.

    personally thou, lockbox/lobi account-wide unlocks > pet tab > 64 bit client :)
