so even back then, f.ucks network was a sci-fi killer; good thing they failed with star wars
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

You know there was a very specific real-world reason for Star Wars getting merch out both ends don't you? George Lucas was the guy who made the money, NOT the film company! (at least until he sold it to Disney) And it's the merch that got people to notice it. It wasn't particularly popular in the initial theatrical release.

Maybe because initially it was only released in 37 theaters because Fox thought it was a sure-fire flop. It was actually the good reviews and viewer response that got it a proper release.

That may be true, but Lucas is often credited with the shrewd business move. It still wasn't a clean deal, as 20th Century Fox still owns the film rights to A New Hope. Regardless, it was a revolutionary concept for the time, and Star Wars has always been at the top of the merchandising game.

Even in Trek's height of the 90s, it didn't quite match Star Wars.

Okay, a few things I liked about this episode:

    1) The shuttle. Disregarding the warp capability (something that shuttles on the Enterprise did not have), the design was nice. Recognizable as a Federation shuttle, yet sleek. I wouldn't mind having one in Star Trek Online.

    2) Saru. It's Doug Jones.

    3) Cadet Tilly. Overly eager and enthusiastic, with a touch (okay fine, a heavy fist) of social awkwardness. She's gonna be the one to fulfill the "Break The Cutie" trope.

    What I didn't like:

    1) Starfleet Fungus Powered Totally-Not-Midichlorians Hyperdrive. Seriously? Come on now.

    2) The engineer dude. Seems like an arrogant jerk. An understandable attitude, given his dislike of what is going on with his research, but still, it might get him killed. Tone it down a notch, son.

    Everything else was "meh."
Space Barbie Extraordinaire. Got a question about Space Barbie? Just ask.

    Things I want in STO:

    1) More character customization options such as more clothing options, letting the toon complexion affect the entire body, not just the head. Also a true RGB color picker applied to all costume and appearance options, which would allow for true appearance customization and homogenous colors instead of "this same exact color looks vastly different on two different pieces."
    2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
    3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts. For obvious reasons this would only apply to standard ground weapons.
    4) For the love of Q please revamp Plasma Ground Weapons. They look like demented Supersoakers right now.
    5) True Vanity Impulse and Deflector effects similar to Vanity Shields.
    6) A greater payout for hitting T6 Reputations. Currently it takes more time and resources to get from T5 to T6 than it does to get from nothing to T5. Make that grind really pay out at the end.
    7) Mirrorverse Refugee event similar to AoY/Delta/Gamma, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
    8) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!

Look its a simple fact out own technology has advanced significantly and as a result the original bridge looks dated.
As much as i like the design of the original bridge it just seems unrealistic for a future ship especially when some real life operation rooms on naval ships look more advanced.

    Star Wars.

The "DISCO!" look stayed for it.

Say, let's make Picard into muscle bound, Vin Diesel, beer chugging, army type guy who shoots first and maybe asks questions later.

Let's make Superman wear just black leather, doc martins and give him a flat top buzz-cut.

Let's super Mario look like Justin Beiber.

Let's make Wonder Woman look more like Jenna Jameson or Kim Cardassian.

Let's put make Doctor Who more like Hulk Hogan.

Let's make Robin Hood or the Arthur Legend more like the Fast and the Furious.

Let's turn Trek into a set of popcorn action stories, gritty and dark as heck, and have more explosions than a Michael Baye film, and make Starfleet more like the marines from Alien or Starship Troopers.

Let's turn Darth Vader into a sad emo that...oh, wait...they did that a decade ago. XD

Valoreh, some us of do care for Trek and TOS in general....you might be all for dropping your pants and pissing all over Jeffries' grave, or Gene's proverbial grave, etc....there are those of us who care about it. Sorry to tell you that.
Want a new, different thing? Make a totally new, different non-trek show all together. Quit treating TOS and TNG fans like they are liabilities rather than fans.

Don't like what this tos fangirl says? Tough.

First, keeping the IP alive and relevant is in no way, shape or form a bad thing. Second, sorry to tell you, but the driving force behind everything Gene Roddenberry did behind Star Trek was to make himself rich. If that meant updating the look and feel to keep his show relevant, you can bet your bottom dollar he would do it in a heartbeat without a second thought. Third, you are not the only person (or group of people) who care about Trek and TOS. In fact, the people who are spending money on Trek to purchase a CBS sub are doing a whole lot more for the IP and keeping it alive than the zealots pining away on the internet over 51 year old television show that looked dated 30 years ago already. To want to keep it the same and never, ever change is an extremely misoneist view of things.

As I've mentioned before, Star Wars is not a shining example for never changing either. There are many people out there who feel Star Wars had gotten stale years ago because it in fact never changes. Basically, if you've seen one, you've seen them all.

This being the key problem with much of the EU, particularly Legacy of the Force and anything with Kevin J. Anderson involved beyond editor level: they keep trying to retell the same Anakin Skywalker story with different names.

The X-Wing series and the Zahn trilogy weren't bad, I think. X-Wing was arguably not as grand, of course.

I think Star Wars had managed to find an "industrial" look that is relatively timeless. But even there... The computer technology in Rogue One for example felt a bit ridicilous and really dated things. But overall the entire design of ship and building interiors just seemed to hold up better than TOS ones did, I can't help it.

In contrast however, the TNG look still works pretty well, I think. (and the same might apply for the TOS movies, since they used similar tricks.) Maybe they won't if we ever develop something better than flat screens and touch displays... The only thing dating them is when there are any pixelated animations shown - it's clear that should look better. But that wouldn't be a problem when you make a new show.

Honestly storing data on cartridges isn't a horrible idea. IF you don't care about the access times. For a different example, just compare with a DVD library.

I often found Star Wars primitive and clunky. Only exception was the Naboo stuff, those I liked, very elegant.

Space... A new frontier... These are the voyages of the starship Fidget Spinner. It's mission, to fight a war with the Klingons. To seek out sick spins and ridiculous drive mechanics. To boldly derp where no Trek has derped before.

    Also, I found Discovery's Mascot:

Les Moonves: A Lot Is Riding On ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ Future Seasons Likely

Just my 2 quatloos, but I doubt CBS will be able to hold those subs that picked it up just for Trek when there isn't any new Trek being made. I certainly won't keep a subscription if it will be a year between seasons for Discovery.

    Same.

It does make you wonder about that Nick Meyer rumor from a while back, though. CBS has to have thought this one thing out. Green-lighting Discovery's second season could help retain some (and talks are going very well on that front, according to Kurtzman), but having Trek year-round may be their ultimate goal.
