Q: @patrickngo Did you ever write a STO story about the loss of Sander223, your friend?

And you do know, sometime along the way, he added notes to his stories to point people toward YOUR stories??? IN other words, he is promoting your stories, even now.

Also, is "Masterverse" series the same thing as "War of the Masters"???
There seems to be two different names being used.

Yes, they're the same thing. The War of the Masters is the official name, "Masterverse" is a nickname.

OK... "War of the Masters" or "Masterverse" is the entire collection. I guess, it being Star Trek, one should say: the "timeline" used for your stories.

I have run across the first story that mentions "Faces in the Flames".
Is this a different collection inside the "Masterverse"? And all those stories should be read together?

And how does this tie in with "The Tales of Alyosha Strannik", which I, also, see mentioned in a few stories by GB? Do those need to be pulled out and read together, too?

I am finding it really difficult reading these really long stories in my browser. End up going back over and over trying to figure out at what point I already read to...especially when I have to come back to reading it the next day.

And, sadly, there are places where it gets cut off at the end of a post. Right in the middle of a sentence...if not right in the middle of a word!! There is really no way to tell how much of a story is gone. I assume, this happened when a long post got moved over to fit in Vanilla's format.

    C'est la vie.

If it gets too bad, I will move on, I suppose.
Awwww....I was really getting into Sway and Ssharki characters. :(

yeah. we were discussing before Sander's illness got worse possibly porting things to a fanfic site. The formatting in the forums here cut off a lot of things, dropped whole chapters, etc. Problem in my case is finding time to do it. A two year old in the house keeps me too busy for much nowadays.

Well, I solved some issues by cutting and pasting the story posts individually into documents.
That took care of the scrolling issue. No more gigantic thread with everything and comments to look through...(especially bad on my Kindle screen).

And since I can edit the doc...I can add color or note to bookmark my location, and use larger font sizes, etc...and don't have to deal with the gray, on gray, on gray....

Only thing not fixable: the ending to every single story post appears to be....JUST GONE MISSING.
I have no clue HOW MUCH of it got chopped off, either.

BTW... @knightraider6 ... I think I found your story about "Bouncing Gorn" in the Vanilla Forum (link in the OP
goes to the old forums). See my other post in this thread. Patrickngo can fix it, if it is the correct one.

The fastest way to hunt these old posts down on Vanilla: search on author and character's names.
Story titles are not unique enough to find the "lost" ones.

@patrickngo You have way too many posts in the Vanilla forums to take on that task by yourself.

Especially if you are planning to catch all the stories that are collaborations with Sander233. Sander233 has half as many posts to sift through as you do, though. I don't know if anyone kept Sander233 stories or notes.

I can tell you this: the formatting used in Vanilla copies over to Google Docs with little to no changes and goes fairly quick. But there were mistakes in formatting that happened when things were moved over from the old forums.

Corrections in Docs is fairly straight forward, though. It should be a breeze tacking on story endings, match fonts and adjust formatting...if you kept your notes straight.

But, likely, your downfall will be one of sheer volume and time to do this.

    +++++++++++++++

I can offer my assistance in this way: since I am starting to copy the extended story posts into Google Docs just to read them, I can send you a link to my Google drive folder and allow you access to edit or copy docs over. At least, you won't have to go through that part of it.

All I ask is: I am allowed to read the whole stories, including the endings, if you can fix them.

But, I, also understand if you just want to blow it off. Just keep better track of your new writings and save back ups somewhere other than in the STO Forums, from now on.

PLEASE save your stories somewhere else, at the least.

Obviously, you have no control over things posted in the STO Forums...anyone can come along and cut and paste stuff from here. Some may not have your best interest (or just reading a good story) in mind.

    These forums are horrible.
So, save your stories...somewhere else. Serious.

Anyhoo....if no one saved the stories before the forum move: I am afraid all of the longer stories are permanently fractured. Which is sad.

I will go through the links in the OP...and see if I can find more connections between URLs from the old forums and where they may have gone to in Vanilla Forums.

Have you guys done any archiving elsewhere like FanFiction.net? And, there's an article on Star Trek Expanded Universe that might be a good place to catalog stories chronologically too. :)

^^ This guy had a good suggestion. Fanfiction.net has a good mobile/device reading interface as well. ;)

Looks like they already have a category set up for the game.

Each author has to make their own login.... and, again...
It will be a huge undertaking to format, as required, and move stories over.

And I am not sure how copyright and trademark policies would apply.
I notice that Sander233 likes to use song lyrics.

We actually did have a discussion of this internally before Sander died. As long as you're not trying to profit or distribute the actual song tracks without permission, Viacom and the music industry both turn a blind eye to fan productions. I've even made a couple YouTube music videos of DS9 clips set to songs by Sabaton. Neither CBS nor Nuclear Blast Records took any action to remove them: in fact they monetized the videos for themselves automatically. Somebody else formerly of the forums, Catstar, also got permission from CBS to publish a furry parody; they literally just told him to take the words "Star Trek" off the cover first.

Original fan FILMS are a special case, but that was brought on by the misbehavior of the people behind one particular production.

Grrrr...too bad I wasn't aware when Sander233 was starting this process of locating story links when Vanilla Forums was fairly new.

I remember exactly what I was doing at that time, too.... I was doing the same thing.
Looking for info in the Vanilla Forums only knowing the links used by the old Cryptic Forums.

Only dealing with posts with the mechanics of ship piloting and gear set ups. Then, I got distracted by....what the heck is everyone mean by "Cat1" and "Cat2"? Where is that coming from? So.....

I got pretty good at hunting down the posts I wanted to read using Google search (which still had the old Cryptic links there) and cross referencing the clues gleaned from the Google results in the Vanilla Forum search.

Until I got tired of math....which I really am not very good with. Though Frtoaster tried to help me understand it. Well....not for me. Blah!

So, in the end I had honed a skill to take links from the old Cryptic forums and locate the same or similar posts in Vanilla. Which I thought was pretty useless.....but, as it turns out, it wasn't being properly utilized.

I think the idea of FanFiction.net is good.....but I am not sure enough people go there. And it is kinda wonky.

Have you guys considered a "STO Literary Group" on Reddit?? And maybe connect to the main STO Reddit?

People already use Reddit for STO stuff....including the Devs. It will be more like the format of the current forums, and you will likely get feedback from more people. Not sure about copy right trademarks on Reddit. Nor who would be blocked from submitting entries.

Of course, it may be more work: moderators will be needed.

And not sure about Reddit's policies on archiving. But I know STO Builds seems to have a tremendous amount of info archived there...not sure if they have to pay for it, though.

Well, I scoured through the OP....I made some progress for the list:

    Hospital Pass (by Milandare)
sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=843591 <-- link went to the OLD Cryptic forums.

    Correction:
Hospital Pass (by Milandare -- September 2013)

    Prisoner 70817 (PN)

    Correction:
    Prisoner 70817 (PN -- June 2014)

Literary Challenge 65 -- “Myths and Lore” given by pwecaptainsmirk in June 2014

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

And these were missing in the list...and I happened to run across them while hunting and pecking around:

STORY (TIE IN, MASTERVERSE) "NO FATE." (PN -- June 2016)
    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1216312/story-tie-in-masterverse-no-fate

THE WAY WE WEREN'T (STORY) (MDK and PN -- May 2016) Sequel to “Academy Daze”
    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1215404/the-way-we-werent-story/p1

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

One more thing: This story is listed in the "Timeline" under Year 2411.... but the story dated in Year 2412. I am not sure if this is another time warp story or not. If not, it is out of sequence.

Forgiveness (PN -- September 2013) << Starts in Year 2412 (check timeline)

But, as you know, I really don't connect with your writings as much as I do with Sander233's, for some reason.

And which "The Chase"? Part 1.
Which I have yet to read.

I did take a bit of time to search "Eialu" in the forum search to figure out she was an Orion.

She had a chance to talk to: a veteran of many wars in the older Klingon, she had a chance to speak with and old trusted friend and the new governor, both of whom, also, was familiar with her situation...much more than the reader...but she finally chose to speak with: someone who fashioned himself as a religious man on weekends? Talk about a shyster.
(I assume this guy was another character from another story?)

I don't know if you think your character talking to more and more people adds depth or drama?

It might if along the way her actions in the riots was revealed to the reader. I know you already have it inside your head and wrote about it....but you have to transfer it to the person reading your story. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with spending time to go back to review things like that, if only in her own thoughts.

What she did...it is not boring. And reviewing it tells the reader it weighs heavy on her mind....that she keeps replaying it in her mind's eye over and over....it has become a pervasive, an invasive part of her everyday interaction with anybody and everybody. I think that is what you were trying to convey with all the conversations.

Meanwhile, I was just sitting there reading going WTF is going on with this woman?? I mean, I get she did "something".... ???? And I left the story feeling empty...looking for page 2.

    It needed a coda.

    Here's an interesting plot twist....
Look at what happens to posts that got archived:

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1055061/literary-challenge-13-the-void

I will definitely need to search via character names for stuff older than Literary Challenge 22 which happened in June of 2012.

    Awesome!

Hmmm....still "Brandon" on the sign off so...pwebranflakes is still running things in the Literary Challenges. It just the system lost all the names.

LOL! I just noticed I picked an fitting Literary Challenge to use as my example post up there: The Void.

    ++++

Ah ha...I been informed by frtoaster....there were 2 "Forumpocalypses" one in 2012 (where everyone lost their forum user names when PWE took over the forums) and the second in 2015 (when PWE decided to move to Vanilla).

And THAT is what I am seeing. And the most likely reason some of these story links are still missing.

Browsing through some of the messed up posts with no names last night for a bit... it looks like there were not so many stories outside of Literary Challenges back then, I may get lucky just focusing on those.

    Note to Patrickngo...for S&Gs....
PvP Weekly Update for 6/15/2012 posted by Gozer got 10.5k views at that time. That is astounding.

You know, Patrick.... I woke up thinking about your stories and WHY I do not like them as much as Sander's stories.

All three of the ones that came to my mind.... the "Forgiveness" one I told you my feelings on above.

Another one with, um....it was a woman scientist on drugs, creating a new computer for starships using Alice in Wonderland as a theme. Then, you took it "off the rails" in my mind by having her brilliant scientist fiancee "weird science" her back to life...unfortunately, I quit reading before the end of that story so I have no clue wtf happened but I refused to go there, either.

The first story I read of yours of the Klingon woman scientist working on propulsion systems and a TRIBBLE....and I went off on you about how you don't write women well.

All three of those stories....has the same problem.

In your head you see that these people are "losing it", and you see HOW they are "losing it"....but you do not show when your characters "snapped" to the readers.

I am pretty sure it is clear as hell in your head, though. So, part of the issue is you have all these ideas flying around your mind, and you see connections between them....but you need to slow down and write it down on paper. So, readers can catch up with you.

    ++++

I guess, a better way of explaining it to you is: your audience is not watching the episode that is unfolding inside your mind.

I will find some time to work on story links this weekend.

Just been busy moving my characters back and cleaning up all the Risa stuff this week.
Risa leaves me with tons of stuff to put away.... power boards, eggs, tags, floaters, favors.....
