A little disappointing to read some of these responses to be honest.

For starters, the OP clearly stated in the thread title that this was 'their experience' of it. Secondly, fact is this game isn't going to appeal to everyone and it didn't appeal to this person. That's NOT wrong.

I mean, I tried SWTOR recently. Whilst I did persist with it for a few weeks I eventually found that I had no desire to log into anymore. I won't elaborate on why as don't want to turn this into a discussion about that game.

However, I am also very aware that if I logged into the SWTOR forum and posted my thoughts on why I have no desire to play anymore I would be met with posts telling me how wrong I am to feel that way, regardless of the fact that it was MY experience of it and how I felt about it.
So this really comes down to whether posting about a 'first experience' of a game on a forum full of people who have been supporting the game in question for a long time is a good idea - and we know the answer to that.

First of all, thank you for being one of only two people who actually READ my post properly.

I marked my post as MY experience only, I did not say that my opinion is fact, cos guess what guys, your opinion ARE NOT FACTS EITHER - that is why they are called opinions.

To those who think that they can be derogatory toward my girlfriend without ever meeting her, well, you are just exposing yourselves as the horrible creatures you are. Remember that public forums are seem by the public, and showing yourselves to be disrepectful narcissists really doesnt paint you in a good light does it? THis might be the internet, but the more intelligent will still retain a certain level of decorum.

What is up with the modern world, why can't anyone respectfully disagree anymore? Has society gone full totaliterian or something? Someone expresses an opinion different to you, and therefore they must burn in hell?

Anyways, back on topic. If the others had actually read my post, I do state that I can appreciate the RPG element to the new tutorial, and yes its nice to go through the academy from scratch. I have also stated that I am a positive advocate of STO, I have been for years, and therefore I am not an enemy of the game. i'd be pretty TRIBBLE to hate STO, then play it for 6 years and spend over 250 euros on it wouldn't I?

The scenario is this: a Female in her 20's with no MMO experience. So it wasn't just the storylines and endless dialogue, it was also orientating the camera with the mouse movement whilst simultaneously moving around, the using of keybinds, switching from RPG to combat mode. I'll be honest, this kind of synergy comes natural to me, but for my lady whos never played an MMO, I wasn't seeing a smooth storyline play out, instead I was watching someone shove a blind person down a corridor, forever running into walls, doorframes, getting occasionaly trapped by bits of scenery etc. When the fighing starts she got all panicky and forgot what keys do what. I know you can stand there and the enemy still couldnt kill you, but the urgency remains. For all you gamers, you might chuckle and think "well she sounds a bit thick" (trust me, shes not) but when you think about it, you do need to do a lot of things at the same time, we just do it without thinking.

So for those who said my girlfriend is "impatient" the tutorial went on for an hour and a half before she quit. THAT IS PATIENCE. You are all acting as if she quit after 30 seconds! If you have a sister or a mother with no MMO gaming experience, sit them down, and let them do the tutorial, whilst reading ALL of the dialogue, and lets see them get through it in a matter of minutes. Trust me, they won't.

Well look at it this way:

Everyone here who's a long term player got through that tutorial and into the game proper. If they hadn't they would not be here today.
So perhaps the game just isn't right for your GF?

I've never in the years I've played STO seen anyone complain they were put off by the length/text/combat of the tutorial. Anyone who didn't click with it just left. Those remaining accepted it as part of the game and got on with enjoying it.
Coming on here to tell a lot of long time players the game has aspects that are pushing people away might make you feel better, but from our point of view it just shows that the game is not what the person in question will enjoy, and they should look elsewhere.
Maybe if she doesn't like the tutorial a different game would be a better introduction to gaming or specifically mmos.

Nah. Some peeps were a mite harsh: irritated, more like, that your GF couldn't be bothered even to finish the tutorial. And I'm glad you got some friendlier responses along the way. But now you're overdoing it a bit yourself. :) Honestly, these aren't 'horrible creatures': just folks who generally react unfavorably to newbies coming in (vicariously, in this case) dishing the game: a rather natural phenomenon -- and some of it is on you.
The scenario is this: a Female in her 20's with no MMO experience. All of which is quite understandable. But, and that's where I think things went 'wrong' for you, most ppl simply accept that they're the ones new at it, and don't begin to blame the game. Ever played EvE Online? Why, I did; and believe me, you get no tutorial there whatsoever (at least not when I was still playing); more like 'Here is a free starter ship, have fun!' :) Seriously, Cryptic at least made a pretty decent effort to do something nice with the tutorials. But yes, every beginning is hard: you're not used to the keybinds yet, the way you need to move about, fire, etc. All of which is entirely natural. But what did you do?! You lard your start post with derogatory remarks yourself (like "Then after eons of Academy-based drivel,"). And of course that's going to irritate people.
If you have a sister or a mother with no MMO gaming experience, sit them down, and let them do the tutorial, whilst reading ALL of the dialogue, and lets see them get through it in a matter of minutes. Trust me, they won't.

Trust me, I did. :) In fact, as irony would have it, minutes ago I just did the GTA V Online tutorial, and was constantly thinking "GTFO with all this racing BS! Just give me back control of my character, and let me go shop for some clothes!" :P But just because I find it annoying to jump thru all their hoops, doesn't mean the tutorial sucks.

Sounds like when I tried to get my non-gamer girlfriend (now wife) to play WoW. After about thirty minutes to an hour of her just not getting it, she gave up. To this day I still insist she didn't give it a fair shot and should try again on a better PC, but I know in my heart that it's just not for her.

Fact is the tutorial arc is exactly the same kind of gameplay as the rest of the game. If you don't like the tutorial, you're not going to like what comes after it, either.

And there's still no excuse complaining about "all the dialogue," since you can skip it if you don't like it.
  • leemwatsonleemwatson Member Posts: 5,503 Arc User
Simple fact OP, this game is an RPG. RPG's have lots of storytelling in them, you'll find that in virtually most of them. All RPG's start with a long tutorial and narrative. And not to sound harsh, but your opinion is one that is to be expected from 'Generation Entitlement'. People have been so spoiled with shortcuts and instant gratification.

If she's never played an mmo before then she will have trouble until she adjusts to the controls. I play computer games all the time so the controls were easier to adjust to. It takes time to adjust to keybinds/mouse as opposed to a controller. And as others have said, dialogue can mostly be skipped and auto-hail can be turned off. So after the tutorial she could have explored around if she wanted to before taking on another mission.

That's the beauty of STO, as you know. You can decline missions if you don't want to turn off auto hail. Or you can accept them and do them when you feel like doing them.

I have captains who have yet to get into the Delta Quadrant missions and I've been playing them for a long time. I've been playing this game since 2013 and I'm female. Maybe she should give it another try and finish out the tutorial, as one poster said, she was nearly finished with it. Then it's up to her what to do in the big ol' universe out there.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

Could it simply be the OP's girlfriend doe not like STO and does not want to hurt his feelings about it? Most of us in a relationship with someone do something which makes that person roll their eyes or do that exasperated sigh thing.

OR, the OP decided to take a cheap shot at STO whilst hiding behind his woman's skirts? What a manly man thing to do.

Well, I was going to say, that it's not the OP that's having trouble with the game. It's the girlfriend. The OP seems to enjoy the game, but is disappointed that the girlfriend gave up on the game during the tutorial, and is only complaining about the length of the tutorial as the OP assumes this led to her burn out. I don't think that is entirely the case, though. OP, every bit of the tutorial is designed to teach the player the basics of the game's controls, first by showing you what to do, then by giving you exercises in using those new skills. New skills build on the foundation and get more complex. The exercises build on one another and get more complex. And eventually you get to exercises where you're having to put it all together. All of that done within the framework of an entertaining story. I'm not doubting the girl's intelligence or patience. You said she struggled with the controls, so maybe her hand-eye coordination isn't as developed as someone who has a lifetime of video gaming under their belt. I can understand, if that is the case, why she might've thrown up her hands when she realized it wasn't quite over yet. But let's be honest, there's a LOT more of exactly the same thing to come, after all, she's just in the tutorial. The only major difference between it and the rest of the game is that you don't have instructions every step of the way, and it gets a lot more difficult/longer/complex for someone who's not used to gaming. Maybe, even though you'd really love for her to get involved with the game (and believe me, we do, too, new players are always welcome)... maybe, MMOs just aren't for her. If she does give it another go, though, the Borg encounter in the tutorial is really the end of the tutorial. After that her character will finally head back to ESD to begin the game proper. And as others have stated, once done, any new characters can skip the tutorial. For the sake of your mutual enjoyment, I hope she does give it another chance. I wish you both good luck on your future gaming endeavors. :)

Yes, but here's the thing with MMORPG and RPG in general (and even other genres of games): if you have NO experience with them, you're gonna be in troubles just to manage to play in the most basic way for hours no matter which game you launch, whether you're male or female.
Ever tried to play Mortal Kombat with no fighting game experience? I did (it was Injustice, but it's MK in the DCU) and it was hard and even now, I still can't properly time the combos that require more than 3 buttons. And let's not talk about the combos that require a pause, holding a button or wiggling the stick in a precise way.

This guy is just a sympathy vampire. In all honesty, if she didn't like the tutorial, she would not like the game no matter how much you probably tried to convince her otherwise. It doesn't matter what her age or gender is, if someone doesn't like the game, they don't like the game. The tutorial can be lengthy when you have done many times, but its not that bad, just keep clicking.

No, but female minds to operate differently to men, not better or worse, just different. So if you think there is something sexist about that, then blame biology.

Besides, there are many females,, of all ages, playing this game. I've not played console games very much and only had the chance over at my SIL's house. Any games I play are on my desktop and that's the reason I had no problems with STO. The tutorial doesn't take that long once you've done it at least once and know what to expect. You can 'x' out of the tutorial things when they pop up and skip them entirely if you choose to do the tutorial again on another same-faction character. Otherwise, you are given the option to skip the tutorial entirely.

As for female minds working differently from male? This female disagrees. What I will say is that different minds do think/work differently but it's not always gender-specific. That's all I have to say on that subject.

I've not done the tutorial in ages, and still remember the borg one on the Miranda. I did just make an alt for the heck of it, well to open boxes to get low level items. And the start just after the tutorial was rather tedious. I did skip the tutorial, so I have no clue what it's like. As someone has mentioned on here, the Romulan tutorial is very well done, and rather enjoyable. So perhaps your girlfriend may like to try that to get to grips with the game.

Usually the best way is to play the tutorial with your girlfriend, so she wouldn't feel overwhelmed. And that is simply my opinion. As the game is much much more fun playing with a friend or partner. Good luck anyhow, and hope the tutorial doesn't fully put her off the game as it can be fun at times.

Just as a note, it's best to ignore people that feel it is important to be rude.

I'm glad you brought that up. :) Because now I realize the 'wrong' vibe I was getting throughout all his replies; one of "But, but, you people don't understand: she's only 20 and a FEMALE!" At OP: Yeah, so what?! Why even bring that up!? Sauria managed just fine; and echatty; and so did I. And so will she -- if she's really interested in playing the game in the first place, that is.

So what you are saying is that she is one of these modern day 20 somethings that lacks an attention span that is longer then something that can be put up on Vine or w/e?

If this tutorial is too longer for her, I couldn't imagine her trying to play older games from the late 80's/early 90's that had tutorials that could go on for literally hours.
Late 80's and early 90's games didn't usually have tutorials at all. They had instruction manuals. Sometimes very large instruction manuals. That you were actually expected to read.

yep; i've played plenty of 90s games that had tutorials as short as a lot of games today have, if they had a tutorial at all, or even popup hints as to how various mechanics worked (something elder scrolls and fallout from 3 onwards does throughout their games - they throw you right into the action and provide instruction in the game through popups and such)

"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch."
"We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
    Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.

Now my girlfirend is in her twenties
So what you are saying is that she is one of these modern day 20 somethings that lacks an attention span that is longer then something that can be put up on Vine or w/e?

If this tutorial is too longer for her, I couldn't imagine her trying to play older games from the late 80's/early 90's that had tutorials that could go on for literally hours.
Late 80's and early 90's games didn't usually have tutorials at all. They had instruction manuals. Sometimes very large instruction manuals. That you were actually expected to read.

Games like the x-wing series also had printouts with all the keybinds on them, that you basically had to tape to your monitor cause you couldn't possibly memorize them all
